Well it is now complete. I would like to thank all those involved and everyone for their patience with the time that it took
I will add some player profiles that I have written up over the next couple of days, these will probably cause more controversy than the picks themselves.
1. Carlton - Marc Murphy - 179/75 (Oakleigh) – Right Foot – Draft camp - All Australian U18 Ruck Rover, averaged 21 possessions for the carnival. AIS/AFL academy graduate in 2005. Draft camp attendee, XXX for 20m, XX cm jump no individual stand out results but very good all round results basically in the top 30% in all tests. Eligible for father/son selection by Brisbane. An all round good footballer, does the in and under stuff and dishes out the ball as well as being the running receiver. Delivers the ball well by his right foot. Can Kick the ball 50m+. However does he have the X factor that will make him a star. He will make it at AFL level and is the safest bet to succeed but I expect he will be a lot like Hasleby and be very important but not a match winner in his own right.
2. C'Wood - Shannon Hurn -187/96 (Central Districts) – Right foot – Draft Camp – 3.04 for 20m dispels the theory that he is slow. All Australian U18 Back Pocket, 24 possessions and 10 marks against vic metro. AIS/AFL academy in 2004. Strong over the ball and good at the contested situation. A bit of this is because he is a man amongst boy. Has a lot of penetration in his kicking. Finished the year strongly in the SANFL and although what I have seen doesn’t grab me as being an AFL star but I think he will be able to break games open with short bursts of dominate play. Although he has a booming kick he still has vision to kick short. Does not collect enough of the ball to be a midfielder. Rumored to have suffered from ostio pubis during this year. SANFL a couple of senior games in 2005. HBF
3. Hawthorn - Josh Kennedy - 195/92 (East Fremantle) – Right foot – Draft camp – XXX for 20m makes him slow although again his 10 to 20m time is OK. All Australian U18 Forward Pocket. AIS/AFL academy in 2004. Very highly rated by others and looks athletic and has what one looks for in a CHF in that he is tall, mobile and has a leap. However I am a bit suspect on his willingness to put his body into a contest where his body is going to get hit as well as his desire to work hard to make a high number of contests not just to get himself into position to receive. WAFL league 4 games, 6 goals: reserves 2 games, 2 goals: colts 5 games, 12 goals.
4. Carlton - Patrick Ryder - Bottom Aged – 196/86 (East Fremantle) – Right foot – Draft camp – surprisingly poor jumping results at draft camp, this could make it hard for him to become a ruckman if he doesn’t grow. Reasonable time for 20m but again not what was expected - All Australian U18 Ruckman. AIS/AFL Academy member in 2005. Looks Very athletic (but is he really) and composed with the ball and has good disposal ability. One of the few players available not to have an obvious weakness. Slipped under my guard at the carnival because I thought he was to small for ruck in the AFL and he is still to small to ruck. He has time to grow which would be good because he is a natural ruckman and his tap work is good with out being overly accurate but this is more me seeking perfection than it being a real weakness. Mobile enough to be able to play CHB at AFL level if he doesn’t grow but may be a bit slow off of the mark and may find his niche as the third tall defender or forward. For his ability he has to gain more possessions to exert more influence on a game. WAFL 3 league/1 goal, 1 reserves/2 goals, 8 colts/3 goals. RUCK/CHB.
5. C'Wood - Xavier Ellis - Bottom aged – 186/72 (Gippsland) – Left foot – Draft camp – XXX for the 20m confirms that the kid has speed. An XXXX for the 3km was disappointing. All Australian U18 back pocket averaging 22 possessions per game. Best player for Australia in the Under 17 series. AIS/AFL Academy graduate. A receiver with reasonable pace and a reasonably long kick. Spends a lot of time way out on his own getting easy possessions. Needs to be more damaging with the ball when kicking long but his short stab passes are very accurate and just what any forward wants to get onto the end of. Having said this every team needs a good receiver. He looks as though he struggles to cope with the physical contact side of the game and this is my big concern with him going into the AFL in that a couple of good games out in the open will result in him being manned up and I fear he will be exposed as not having the in and under game to break the attention. I can’t recall him winning what I would determine a contested possession but I have seen him lose a lot of contests, if he could change this view I have of him he would be right up the top. Appears to have a good tank as well as speed and certainly knows where to position himself to get a lot of the football.
6. Hawthorn - Andrew Swallow - 183/76.5 (East Fremantle) – Right Foot – Draft camp – kicking looks ok but he needs to settle before kicking to make it more effective, he will never be a great kick but with work his kicking should become serviceable. Sometime I think he just tries to kick the ball to far. His left foot is accurate over a short distance. – All Australian U18 Centre. AIS/AFL academy graduate in 2004. Draft camp attendee who is 2.92 sec for 20m and a XXcm jump, tested in the top 20% of attendees for a lot of the tests, but he does have the smallest hands at camp but this has not seemed to stop him being a one grab player. Explosive midfielder. He has the ability to stand up in a pack and gain possession and quickly break away from the pack. He could be an all round footballer in being able to work in and under as well as receive. Reminds me of cousins the way that he moves but is more direct. 7 Reserves and 5 league games for 2005. CENTRE
7. Essendon - Nathan Jones - Bottom Aged – 179/84 (Dandenong) – Right Foot – Draft camp - 3.05 for 20m suggests that he isn’t as quick as most people think but a 10.31 for 3km tends to back up the thought that he can run all day. Left foot tends to go a bit like a nine iron and needs to have more penetration, with work his disposal could become quite good. All Australian U18 Rover who averaged 22.7 possessions per game but kicked 0 goals and broke his hand in game 3, he had 27 touches against WA. Is good at centre bounces and then tends to play a kick behind the play and picks up a lot of possessions this way. Does not trouble the scorers enough for me to consider him as a midfielder at AFL level. He stands strong in a tackle and maintains his balance even when being turned around in a tackle which allows him to release an effective tackle under pressure. He is a bit one dimensional with his disposal by foot in wanting to kick long and straight. More suited to defense. He can have big games stats wise as illustrated in the grand final that doesn’t result in his team putting scores on the board, very few possessions are part of plays that result in scores. Strong at the football and does the defensive things as well. TAC 16.1 kicks, 9.0 Handballs, 25.1 Disposals, 3.2 Marks, 0.5 Goals. HBF
8. Richmond - Jarrod Oakley - Nicholls -Bottom Aged – 188/75 (East Perth) – right foot – Draft camp – 2.85 for 20m shows that he has express speed. Has speed and likes to play direct, however he goes missing for long periods of time. His workrate would need to be improved but he has the ability to have an impact around the ground as well as forward of centre. WING
9. Brisbane - Mitchell Clark - 197/90 (East Fremantle) – Right foot – Draft camp – XXX for 20m has one wondering has he got injury problems, did he hit the weights over summer and lose some zip or was he just an early developer. Upon watching his game early in the season he had a lot more athleticism early in the year, still needs to be stronger in the mind and body at a contest. Tall agile forward for his size but needs to get a lot harder at the contest and may have to become a ruckman as he appears to lack a yard of pace to be a dominant forward. Appeared to have a presence at ground level and once he has the football he oozes class but I have a question as to whether he will get the ball often enough especially in a team that isn’t dominating. He often holds out his opponent with one arm whilst trying to take a one handed over head mark, he may have got away with this when he was younger but he will need to start trying to get 2 hands to the football if he is going to succeed as a key forward in the AFL. 7 league games 3 goals, 2 reserves games 3 goals and 2 colts games. RUCKMAN/FORWARD
10. Fremantle - Beau Dowler - 195/84 (Oakleigh) – Right Foot – Draft camp – again another tall with a disappointing leap, XXX for 20m is impressive for his size as was his 3k time trial - Accurate shot for goal who can slot them from the boundary as well as being able to find a team mate. Right and left handed handball - All Australian U18 Half Forward Flank. AIS/AFL academy graduate. He has great hands either at ground level or when marking the football. Has the natural instinct to protect the fall of the ball by sticking his bum out. He moves very smoothly and it is so smooth that he doesn’t look like he is trying. Can turn on a five cent coin which is unusual for a man his size. When playing in defense he is easily beaten in the contest. Takes a lot of contested or over the back type marks (a bit like gehrig) but does not get many of his goals from a lead. He will need to improve his workrate. TAC 11.1 kicks, 5.0 handballs, 16.1 disposals, 7.7 marks, 2.9 goals CHF
11. Bulldogs - Beau Muston - 189/79 (Murray) – right foot – Draft camp – He has filled out a little since the start of the year. He has good vision but his execution can leave a bit to be desired at times and his kicking action can look ugly at times. Appears to be quite an athlete and has some speed and a reasonable leap. knee reconstructed half way through the 2005 season.
12. Melbourne - Cleve Hughes - 192/84 (Norwood) – Right foot – Draft camp – Better leap than other key forwards at draft camp, XXX for the 20m showing that he has the pace to lead. - All Australian U18 CHF. . Has nice size about him and is quick over the first couple of steps which allows him to lead for the ball and take easy marks. Could be used as a leading forward up the wing a bit like brown in 2004 and Reiwoldt in his younger day. Uses the ball well by hand or foot. The type of player when he has the footy you lead with confidence too. Would have to work on his contested marks to be a power at AFL level, when he is in the position to attach a contested marking situation he doesn’t approach it strong enough, I think this is more a mental issue than a physical weakness. He appears to have a long enough reach to be able to take pack marks. Kicked five goals in one reserves game as well as being consistently in the goal kicker in what was an average team. A negative is Norwood has a habit of producing key forwards that don’t improve. SANFL Reserves CHF.
13. West Coast – Darren Pfeiffer -186/84 (Norwood) – Right foot – Draft camp – Highest standing leap at draft camp and a XXX for the 20m shows that he has athletic ability. All Australian U18 Half Back Flank 21 possessions in the game against vic country. Has the body for AFL football and demonstrates good strength over the ball and looks a fluid mover. A couple times during the championships he spilt some marks that would have been easy if he had pushed half a step back into traffic but he seemed reluctant to do this as he was unsure of what was behind him thus courage is not his strong point. This however does not flow through to ground level contests where he puts his body in without using excessive vigor but that basically goes for all the kids in the draft pool. Use of the ball needs to be tidied up. Has played a couple of senior SANFL games. HBF
14. Hawthorn - Luke McEntee - 197/89 (North Adelaide) – Right foot, no left foot - Draft camp – XXX for 20m is a sensational result as is his his XX cm standing jump and a XXcm running jump. Athletic results are better than I would have thought. Kicking currently lacks distance but it is accurate. Ruckman who has a lot of work to do to improve his ruck work but he has the basics there of having a leap, the desire to get front spot and he can direct his tap work. However he looks athletic and agile for his size. Finds a fair bit of the football at ground level or when filling in the hole. In congested spaces he has nice clean hands and has good reflexes and once he has a frame big enough for AFL centre square work he will be an important part to improving that teams clearances from the centre. Covers a lot of ground and presents well, seems to cover the ground without putting in any effort. BOG in SANFL reserves semi-final against crows rookie ruckman and ex-afl ruckman. RUCK
15. Geelong - Richard Douglas - 180/68 (Calder) – Right foot – Draft camp – his running leap showed up as being very good and a XXX for 20m and a good 3km time suggests he is a better athlete than I have given him credit for. 50m + kick. Explosive midfielder, looks to be tough at the contest and damaging with his disposal. Takes a good one on one contested mark above his head. Absolutely blitzed the TAC this season, more by way of consistent performances rather than explosive performances. Despite all this I do not get over excited about him as there seems to be something that says he wont make it but I can’t justify this feeling. TAC 16.5 kicks, 7.0 handballs, 23.5 disposals, 3.9 marks, 0.9 goals. CENTRE
16. Adelaide - Travis Varcoe - Bottom Aged - 179/72 (central Districts) - right foot – Draft camp – Long arms for his height, he may be able to use this to his advantage if he knows how to use his body in a marking contest. Made his SANFL before injuring his foot and missing the bulk of the season. He has a huge reputation. Unlikely to slip down this far but I struggle to pick a player who has missed the most of the season and is still missing at grand final time with his foot reportedly still in a moon boot. Certainly looks as though he could amass large amounts of possessions as an outside player but he is still capable of getting his own football. His use of the ball was shocking in the game I have seen but I am giving him the benefit of the doubt since it was his first league game.
17. Adelaide - Austin Lucy - 193/91 (Caloundra QLD) – Right foot – Draft camp - All Australian U18 Full Back averaged 14 possessions during the carnival. Big wraps on the kid but I can’t rate him that high. Having said that he gets a lot of the football on the way out of defense. Not sure about his contested marking ability and doesn’t appear to have the natural spoiling skills required of a full back. Has the speed and with work on his strength he could be a good attacking full back.
18. Hawthorn - Marcus Drum - 190/80 (Murray) – Right foot – Draft Camp – A very good 20m time of XXX which should help him stand leading forwards. He has a long penetrating kick. He can leap and has clean hands in the marking contest or at ground level. He appears to have an extra long reach that will help him to get a fist on the ball in a contest. He is also quite good below his knees. Tall defender who could well be a Paul Roos type defender who provides run out of defense as well as nullifying his opponent. Not sure if he will be strong enough or tall enough to be a key defender. TAC 14.2 kicks, 7.5 handballs, 21.7 disposals, 0.2 goals. HBF
19. Essendon - Matthew Spangher - 193/83 (Eastern) – Right foot – Draft camp – XXX for 20m is a major concern but his speed when up and running is ok it just looks as though he takes a while to get cranked up. Very good 3km time. 50m+ kick. Tall defender who appears to be quite mobile and plays tight. Runs straight down the middle with purpose when he wins the ground level ball. Has had injury problems for a lot of this year. He reminds me of the Wakelin boys in the way he moves. His speed off of the mark is now a concern especially when it is added to him being pencil thin and having injury problems. TAC 10.0 kicks, 5.5 handballs, 15.5 disposals, 4.1 marks, 1.2 goals. FB
20. Carlton - Scott Pendlebury - Bottom Aged – 188/92 (Gippsland) – Draft camp -appears to be a front runner. Does not appear to like the tough stuff but I think it is more a case of not knowing what to do. Looks athletic and certainly looks like a sportsman just not sure that he is going to be a footballer.
21. C'Wood - Dale Thomas - 182/76 (Gippsland) – Right foot – Draft Camp – XXX for 20m shows how explosive he is, just need to teach him how to stay involved in the game all day and not just 5 minutes here and there. All Australian U18 Half Forward Flank, 19 possessions in the game against WA. Midfielder who flashes in and out of the game. Does some very good things and has enough pace to break the lines. TAC grand final showed how he can be good but if one looks at the game closely there wasn’t that much to write home about other than his 4 goals. I struggle to put a finger on where he really belongs. Certainly an upside to his football but not sure that it will be able to be drawn out of him. CENTRE
22. Hawthorn - Daniel Nicholls - 175/67 (Dandenong stingrays) – Left foot – State screening – XXX for 20m shows that he has some pace but still not necessarily quick at top speed, also had a XXX beep test which is a positive for him. A brilliant first half in the first game of the finals and a solid effort in the grand final where he was instrumental in a lot of the stingrays goals. Looks to be good at the in and under stuff as well as receiving the ball. Appears to read the play well and gets into positions where his touches can be creative and effective without sitting on a half back flank getting easy touches. His disposal by foot although it does not look flash is quite effective and when one sits down and studies the results of his kicking one has to upgraded his rating substantially. Very one sided player on first impression as he always goes onto his left foot, however this is also deceptive because when he is required to go right he does so by hand to a running player who can run into the space better than. Tends to carry the ball 10 to 20m before disposing of the ball. He can use his right foot when he has to. Handballs on both sides of the bodies. He can use his body in a marking centre and can compete in marking contests against players that are taller than him. He chases well and tackles and shepherds well. TAC Cup. CENTRE
23. Collingwood - Tom Rischbeith -190/83 (Sturt) – Right foot – Draft camp - Strong at the marking contest with good hands. Does not appear to be big enough to be a key position player but could be effective as a third tall forward. Needs to improve his ground level work. A brilliant athlete as far as distance times are concerned, rather than that endearing him to me it has cemented in my mind that at this stage he does not have a football brain. Playing reserves in the SANFL. HFF
24. Richmond - Nick Lower - 187/86 (Norwood) – Left foot – Draft camp - a good looking athlete, takes some good marks and looks clean when delivering the ball. Needs to get more involved in the play. Has made his senior debut in the SANFL. WING
25. Brisbane - Grant Birchell - Bottom Aged – 192/84 (Davenport) – Draft camp – XXX for 20 confirms that he has pace. All Australian U18 Wing, averaged 22 possessions per game. Tall athletic player who is good at ground level for his size and shows dash. Could provide run from defence. Disposal skills need to be improved. Appear to play more like a midfielder than a key position player, if he was to make it I feel it would be as a Koutoufides/C.Cornes midfielder but I am not sure that he is that good. He appears to me to be a high risk pick but the rewards will be huge if he makes the grade. TALL MIDFIELDER.
26. Fremantle – Sam Elliott - 181/74 (South Adelaide) – Right foot – Draft camp - Good at collecting the ball, but does not appear to be quick enough or use the ball well enough to push himself into the better midfield group. CENTRE
27. Bulldogs - Paul Bower - Bottom Aged – 192/87 (Peel Thunder) – Right Foot – Draft Camp – XXX for 20m is another tall that disappointed in the sprint. All Australian U18 CHB. Very good at CHB and has a natural rebounding side to his game. Foot skills need to be improved, he is not afraid to get right into the contest. Appears to have a good turn of speed. Could play a Chad Cornes type role at CHB. WAFL colts 14 games. CHB
28. Kangaroos - Alan Toovey - 189/79 (Claremont) – Left foot – Draft camp – Good leap mixed with a XXX for 20m tends to suggest as a defender he will be able to play above his height or on the utility type players. Has made his senior WAFL debut this year. Solid Defender, nothing flash (other than the ease with which he picks up the ground level ball when out in the open) and does not rebound enough and when he does, it lacks urgency. By this I mean when he does rebound the football he tends just to kick to the short option rather than kicking long in an attempt to break the lines. To me he is too small to play as a key backman and may lack the flexibility to play as the third tall defender.
29. West Coast - Shaun Higgins - – Bottom Aged – 183/79 (Geelong) – Right foot – Draft camp – XXX for 20m is slower than expected but is right up there for time between the 10m and 20m mark. Can hit the leading forward and is not afraid to use his left foot. He is a natural competitor who is strong and determined over the ball and in a contest. Clears the ball from the centre bounce by weaving his way out of traffic then accelerating towards goal, and appears to have quite a bit of tow without being exceptionally quick. He has a lot of possessions that are entries into the forward fifty without playing forward of the football. Most of his possessions are in the corridor and his natural instincts are to play direct. To be a top flight AFL footballer he will have to improve his ability to receive the ball. Gets into positions to crumb goals and he needs to improve his finishing. Dislocated his shoulder in the last minor round game in 2005 and also had a thigh injury last year. TAC 12.9 kicks, 9.5 handballs, 22.4 disposals, 3.7 marks, 1.3 goals. CENTRE
30. Port Adelaide – Alan Obst - 193/82 (Central Districts) – Right foot – Draft camp – reasonable jumping results without being outstanding, XXX for 20m is reasonable without being good. Agile rebounding CHB. Appears to know when to go for the mark and when to fist. He has the under rated ability to put a fist on the ball. Burns the ball a bit when coming out of defense but he at least tries to get the ball moving forward quickly. He appears to cover the ground very quickly for his size as well as being quite agile. Looks to have grown since the carnival and has been playing full forward, does not appear to have the natural instincts to be a forward but he may yet develop them. He looks as though he enjoys the one on one marking contests especially the wrestling side, sometimes focuses on the wrestle and forgets that the football is the objective. SANFL reserves, CHB/FB.
31. Geelong - Ben McKinley - 184/82 (Northern) – Right foot – Draft camp – XXX for the 20m and XXXX for the 3 km are very disappointing which will bring a question over his athletic ability. All Australian U18 Full Forward, 6 goals against SA and 5 against Vic Country. Performed well at full forward but he is too small to play that position in the AFL. He has a good mark and more importantly he can move amongst traffic and could find a niche on the half back line playing a Montgomery type role. HBF
32. Adelaide - Jace Bode - 185/84 (Sturt) – Left foot – Draft Camp – XXX for 20m which backs up that he has some pace. All Australian under 18 team. Made league debut in the SANFL at the end of the season. Is efficient in his handling of the ball without being flash. Does things with a lot of poise but is prone to making basic errors. On further inspection of his game I have noticed that most of the things he does are extremely effective and he has more pace than one first realises, needs to learn to carry the ball through the lines to become a damaging player.
33. St. Kilda - Max Bailey (West Perth) - UNSEEN
34. West Coast - Courtney Dempsey - 186/70 (Morningside QLD) – Right foot – Draft camp -
35. Geelong - Wayde Mills - 196/88 (Southport QLD) – right foot – Draft camp
36. Carlton - Matt Laidlaw - 184/80 (Oakleigh) – Right foot – Draft camp - Drops some marks he should take when he has other people around him who might make a contest. Plays very tall for his height and for this reason he needs to improve above the head.
37. C'Wood – Ryan Jackson - 188/81 (Northern) – Right foot – draft camp – XXX sec 20m gives weight to the argument that he is slow but his 3k time trial of XXX is quite impressive, and a XX cm vertical leap is disappointing. Broke his ankle in Ireland during 2004. When in the play he looks good. Could do with improving his marking if he is going to develop into an AFL Footballer. He fades in and out of the game to much but he tended to fix this towards the end of the season. Although not having speed he has a good strong first step if not quick and changes direction better than most his size. A big bodied midfielder who would be handy in any team that is short of this type of player, no star but should be very serviceable and loves a tackle. WING
38. Hawthorn – Travis Tuck F/S (Dandenong Stingrays)
39. Essendon - Jay Neagle F/S (Gippsland Power)
40. Richmond – Ed Lower - 186/85 (Norwood) – Right foot - Draft camp – Made league debut in SANFL in the last round of the season.
41. Brisbane - Grea Grant - Bottom Aged - 184/74 (Perth) – Draft Camp – UNSEEN
42. Fremantle – Tom Hurley – Bottom Aged – 180/73 (Sturt) – Right foot – collects a lot of football in close and forward of the centre but one rarely sees him backward of centre. His disposal appears to be quite good and he converts set shots on goal. Rarely waste the football. He appears to lack a yard in pace but is probably quick enough to survive in the AFL and his speed is what will stop him becoming a top notch AFL player. ROVER
43. Kangaroos - Todd Grima - 192/87 (Northern Bombers – Tasmania) – Right Foot – Draft camp – XXX for 20m adds weight to the theory that he doesn’t have explosive pace his agility test and 3km time trial were guite good and again an average leap from a potential tall forward- very accurate kick at goal, can use his left as well – All Australian U18 Interchange, 14 goals for the championships including 10 in game one against NT. Tall key position forward. Great balance and good work ethic, hands are reasonably strong in the contest, although he does not have the strongest grip on the ball which is why he double grabs marks. Attacks the fall of the ball with purpose. It appears as if he reads the fall of the ball exceptionally early which allows him to get to the fall of the ball better than most. Looks like he will fill out and have a strong upper body. Has a good leap if he can have room to take a couple of steps. Lacks a powerful lead. Carried an ankle injury during the carnival and still moved well. Has a habit of giving away free kicks when tackling to his over enthusiasm and lack of technique. VFL 3 games, 3 goals, TAC 3 games, 14 goals. CHF
44. Port Adelaide – Daniel Stanley - Bottom aged - 186/89 (Geelong) – Right foot – Draft camp – right up there with his leaping and a XXX for 20m. Looks to have some speed about him and some good balance as well as strength. Everything he does is done in a manner that shows he has confidence and conviction about what he is about to do. Looks suited to the third tall defender role but if he grows a little more he may become a key defender. Provides plenty of run out of defence as well as being good in the contested situation, Just have to make sure that he doesn’t bulk up too much.
