Haven't seen that yet. Am about to go and purchase the paper.

Leaning back when you kick can make the ball go right (assuming you are a right footer). I've always found the more upright you keep your torso, the better your kicking is. Worked for me anyway.
I had a real problem with accuracy about a year ago, and I found out it was because I was leaning over the ball way too much. I losened up my back a bit and what do ya' know?

Upright is good, but they way some of these kids are kicking, you'd think they've had chronic back pain and suffer from arthrisis.

Is anyone else as concerned as I am about our poor kicking skills? It wasn't great on Thursday, and seemed to have gotten worse on Saturday. At least Ratts knows that this needs to be worked on, as I have said in a previous post, hopefully this will be a focus for the remainder of the pre-season.
I don't think we should be too concerned with our skills at this time of year HBF , better the boys get the crap out of the system now . I'd expect the coaching staff will focus a little more on skills as the pre season goes on . Fitness was an obvious concern last year and should be much improved in 08 and even if our skills are down slightly this year , we will improve with time which is all a part of players developement . we're still the youngest team in the comp which may show against some of the more experienced teams in the comp , but should still have a satisfactory season considering . I agree with your prediction for our final ladder position and who knows , we could be an outside chance as a dark(navy) horse to make the eight , though i wouldn't hold my breath .

From the few training sessions that I have been to, the lists kicking skills, or lack thereof, have certainly been a focus. Quite a significant amount of time has been spent in this area, and whilst the players' skills have improved slightly, they still have a way to go in this area.

Training Report 5/1/08

by EBIAC

Still warming up, the main group got into pairs and proceeded to do some chips kicks to each other, followed up by each player rolling the ball along the ground to their partner for crumbing practise. The team then moved over to the wing opposite the Calrton Legens Stand (i'm not sure what it's called, i'm still learning!) for some tackle/quick hands/reflex/pick up practise, which involved splitting into five lines. rebounding net to get the ball to each other.

Feel free to call that the 'old press box' wing in your future reports. Us old stagers will know what you mean.

The pictures in this post from Warby over on Talking Carlton says it all!

Some good news on the boys from the SUNDAY HERALD SUN yesterday that didn't provide a link; including a good wrap by Rod Nicholson.

Reading the scanned article it seems we're taking a similar path to South Sydney up here in the NRL. When they came back into the league a couple of years ago, they went with a massive youth team, but weren't going anywhere due to the huge inexperience and lack of leadership within the team. Then in 2007 Russel Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court bought the club, recruited some older, experienced players, and the club made the finals.

Love everything Ratten is doing. Love that he realises without some leadership and experience our kids will never develop the way we want them to and fulfill their potential

No Wuckens, but I have copyrighted, patented, registered and incorporated the acronym BB, but if you talk nicely to me I'll let ya use Bb; seeing that you are a veteran. I'll bet you aren't as old as me though! :p
Sharing is caring.
Cheers,
BB

Here is another one this time from Cazzesman over on Talking Carlton. Thanks Mr. Cazz :)

I really enjoyed Monday training. It was a very pleasant 23 or 24 degrees with no wind. The ground looked a treat and all was peaceful. A couple of 2008 AIS kids in Heyne and Hill joined the fun as did NSW scholarship lad Jake Pianta. Those 3 will be here for 2 or 3 days just getting the feel of things.

What I enjoyed the most about the session was the ‘Vibe’. Sure there were some mis- kicks, some fumbles and some muck ups but during the 90 minutes I was there, there honestly wasn’t that many.

BUT the ‘Vibe was the thing. Every drill and contest was undertaken and completed with a joyous smile and fun attitude by all participants. The group was having a grand old time running around like young colts……which of course 98% of them are.

Having Judd, Stevens, Scotto and Hadley involved in most things really lifted the tempo and the rest got on board.
Even at the end when many were almost out on their feet after completing 20 minutes of one on one wrestling and grappling they were all still laughing out their last breaths. The wrestling was terrific because it became an excellent strengthening and aerobic workout.

The session was about learning to keep your balance in the tackle and the physical contest. In the end some of the smaller guys were getting the better of the bigger guys simply because they learnt to use their speed and agility to get in and under the guard of the bigger lads.

After the wrestling took the stuffing out them they went straight into some one on one contesting the ball on the ground stuff and they were all still smiling. AB and Setanta were having the time of their lives trying to bury each other in the ground and Jamieson vs Fev was a last man standing affair. And still they laughed.

It was tough and it was grueling but above all it was FUN with Capital ‘F’. They kept slogging away because their mates were with them and surely that is the way it should be this time of year.

esprit de corps• (də kôr′)
noun
group spirit; sense of pride, honor, etc. shared by those in the same group or undertaking

We looked to have it in spades at the moment. Hopefully it is here to stay. Go Blues.

Regards Cazzesman

A nice little one with some different observations from a first time poster coolrunnings over on TC. Thanks mate. ;)

After a few years of reading the posts on this site I have decided to have a crack myself.
After attending my first training session since last year here are a few brief observations:

* our boys are definately a lot more focused this year, you can see that the intensity and the fun has lifted.

* Murph is set for a big year, you can see in the way he is training that someone has lifted a huge weight off his shoulders .... look out for a big year. You can tell that he will enjoy being less of a marked man.

* you've got to love our eddie. He just has so much fun out there on the track. His hands are so clean in picking up anything off the pack or deck. Also look for a big year from a much more fitter eddie. we could use his skills and pace through the guts.

* Don't write off the two SA boys in Russell and Hartlett. People forget how young these two still are, and some do take longer than others. Russell seems bigger stronger and fitter, and more importantly he appears to be enjoying his footy. I believe will develop as a player under Ratts. Harts just needs some luck with the injuries.

* I've been involved in footy for a little while ...... and I can tell you that Carlton made 100% the right decision in selecting Krueze as number 1. some of the things he did at training today were exceptional ...... like crumb the footy with on touch of the deck at full tilt and then dispose all in the one motion. Guys at his height should not be able to do this. You can't teach this. BUT patience is the key ...... until hey has a couple of pre seasons under his belt then don't expect too much ....... but he is a gem and will be a star.

* all up the intensity has lifted .... just need the skills to lift with it ... however they weren't that bad today. From what I saw today I'm excited in seeing the improvement in some of these kids this year. I expect Grigga, Jacko, Jaimmo, gibbs (all class), Hampson, and the two irish boys to really improve in leaps and bounds. They all seemed hungry for the footy at training today .... something I haven't seen from our team in a long time.

* those clearly showing leadership out there .... Judd, Stevens, Simpson stood out ........ but all seem to have a little more confidence out there.

p.s. that judd bloke, who does he think he is running around at 75-80%and still being a class above.

hope that didn't bore anyone.

can anyone see a designated CHF being groomed at training?

considering that it seems that Waite will play CHB, i am a little unsure who will take hold of this position for the 08 season!!
Call me crazy, but I think Aisake may be the answer to the CHF problem. He has the structure to hold up a Key Position, so I don't see why it's not a posibility. Maybe he could have a trial in the pre-season competition? Never know, might work.

i always thought he would be nicely fit in that spot, for some reason i can see Ratts play with a 3 prong ruck attack where one of the guys, such as Cloke, Aisake or Kreuzer would rotate through ruck and CHF

Not really an option based on what I have seen.

While I have only seen a few VFL games this year A.OhAilpin seems a more natural running player and overhead marking is probably his biggest weakness. Based on that I give him no chance of being CHF.

Ratten mentioned that Cloke, Edwards and Hartlett are all contenders but in todays game it isn't really vitol to have a true CHF as long as you have got a couple of big targets, some of which can lead up and link with the mids (e.g. Fisher). Not every team follows such exact structures anymore.
