In last years draft we had the opportunity to get Leroy Jetta. What a mistake it was to overlook him. It was a miracle that he slipped so far down the draft order, but when he was available at carltons second pick it was fantastic. It was an opportunity for carlton to pick up a super quick mid/fwd. Picking Hampson was a mistake. We should have taken Jetta at 17 and hope Hampson was there at 19 (Which he would have been because essendon wasn't going to pick another tall).

This will be a huge mistake. Remember these words. Grigg is very soft, can't kick and is only a back flanker, Hampson isn't really a proven under age footballer (Was worth the gamble at pick 19, but not at pick 17 in front of jetta).

With a midfield that contains Bentick, Murphy, Stevens and Gibbs. These guys are not quick. We needed an injection of pace. Jetta was the answer for carlton. Carlton lack pace in the midfield and it will come back and haunt us in the future.

Jetta is a little speedster, what 178cm? With attitude? Sounds like an Essendon special to me, a Bewick clone.

Carlton are reported to have been told that the Bombers wanted Hampson. We had to do it if thats the case.

If youre comparing Jetta to Grigg then shouldnt we wait 5 years first to compare? Grigg is 12cm taller and very fast at training.

Woah talk about getting a bit ahead of yourself here. Its 2 games into the NAB cup and already your talking about drafting mistakes. Also if I recall around the draft time nobody really rated Jetta at all, he was just seen as a flashy player

Lack pace?

Grigg and Benjamin both finished in the top 10 in the 20 metre sprint trial at the draft camp.

Maybe this is why we didn't draft him.

Gary O'Donnell's 2007 season preview:

Little fella from WA who has got all the looks and all the skills. He probably just needs to find a stronger work ethic but when he gets the ball in his hands he exhibits 270 degree vision and he is going to be very good around goals for us.

We already have Betts, we don't need another clone.

Griggs.Anderson and Benjamin are all quick and signifigantly taller than Jetta as well.

We recruited for height and speed and got it.

Grigg and Benjamin might be quick, but can they play football? Pace is great, but being quick is no good if you can't kick a ball. Grigg and Benjamin are quick but can't kick. We need players with good pace and good football ability.

100m sprint champs are quick. Does this mean they would be great footballers? No.

Can't judge them yet - none have played senior footy (apart from Jetta in All-Stars). We'll have to wait and see how Benjamin and Grigg turn out, as well as Jetta. However, that said, I'd rather someone with a decent attitude towards footy. We don't need a Motlop or Norman type who will leave b/c of home sickness or not care enough for footy to make it.

Fair enough. But i have watched a lot of these kids over the last couple of years and i know i will be right.

Before the draft a few years ago I wanted Monfries with our first pick which was pick nine. When we chose russell i almost smashed my computer screen. I wanted Monfries and second option was matthew Bate. Both Monfries and bate went in the early teens and I knew we stuffed up again. 3 years on it looks like i am right on the mark. Monfries and Bate look fantastic tough, hard footballers. Russell is soft and lacks intensity.

Wayne Hughes give me your job. I'll show you how to select talent.

Maybe this topic would be more relevant at the end of the 2008 season. Lets wait and see.

I thought Carltons drafting and trading (or lack of trading) was exceptional at seasons end.

any chance we can put a proposal to the afl whereby we can trade gibbs for jetta ASAP

I always take newbies bagging our team with a grain of salt...i'm tipping you are a sad little bummer boy with too much time on your hands .
for your sake i hope you aren't really a blues supporter

Nowadays in the AFL, with teams so lacking in balls when it comes to trades, you have to pick position players in the draft to fill needs, particularly with those 2-3rd round picks (where guys are just solid rather than outstanding, and its all about picking the guys you like best).

I got no problem with us taking a ruckman there, if thats the way Hughes saw it. I mean, its not like having a ruckman on the team is ever going to be a problem - even if he is a dud, in 3 years time he's still probably at Cloke level and worth a trade for a third or fourth round pick. If he turns out good, then we definitely win.

Jetta, on the other hand, is an undersized mid with reported attitude problems (although the attitude problem/spectacular tag might just be racial profiling). If thats true, he's a dime a dozen type guy - upside is he's Aaron Davey, downside he doesn't play a single game. Not worth a top 20 pick IMO, unless there's something there you really, really like about him

Buddy you have just shot your mouth off without really looking into the player we have drafted. Do you kow anything about Grigg, have you seen much of him in a game??? yes he is quick and his delivery is very very good. He was named in the All Australian u18 side on the field, adelaide were to take him at pick 14 but there local boy sellar was still available....
I watched him in more than 15 games last year and the year before, the amount of improvement he has made is awesome. He will be very handy for us, is deceptively tall, quick, has good foot skills and can kick GOALS...

Before you shoot your mouth off at any of our other draft pics this year buddy, maybe do some research into the players, i think you will be quiet embarrased at your coments come seasons end!

Grigg started in the middle against SA last year, pretty much had the most possessions in that particular game and was the quickest player over five metres at draft camp in addition to being won of the quickest over 20 metres.

Have you even seen him play?

You can't say they wouldn't have picked Hampson since Laycock is looking like a bust and Ryder is being developed into a KPP.

Our Football club have made a point in the last few years, to draft players that are not only talented, but of good character. Hence this may be why Jetta want piccked up by us or went further down the estimation of other clubs

I have seen plenty of grigg play. I watch all the kids. I'm very rarely wrong. I live and breath the blues and believe me i hope im wrong. But, Grigg is a soft c---

All Australian means crap all for U18. If you play 3 reasonable games you get in the team. It a load of rubbish. So many players are U18 All Aust and don't get drafted, or they are complete flops. Grigg being an all Australian is all you have to support your case. I saw 2 of the games and all his possesions were trash easy balls. Show him a pack and you can bet that he will be on the outer waiting for the soft ball.

Actually, come to think of it he reminds me a little of Adrian whitehead. Our stuff ups started with Vance, Massie, Livo etc. It will continue with Grigg, Russell, Hartlett, Hampson, Edwards etc.

I WOULD LOVE TO BE WRONG.

You really are a c**k s**cker. You saw two of his games, that answers my question about you mate.... How can you bag these players when you havn't seen them at senior level mate, harlett has been injured for the majority of th time, hampson has played for 2 years and Edwards is showing some good signs.

Keep up the good negativitey for the club mate, your one of those supporters thats makes us all look like ****ers, bagging your own players, your in the same league are carolyn wilson, a total nuffer!

If you knew how to read, I said I saw him play 2 out of 3 games at the U18 carnival. I have seen him play about 10 times all together. My point was in 2 games out of 3 he just played ok and he got all-aust. This tells me you don't have to do sh-- to get in under u18 all aust side.
