David Hille was desperately unlucky not to be named an All-Australian in 2008 after the giant ruckman imposed himself as one of the more dominant and consistent big-men in the competition. A good reader of the game, Hille has the ability to clear the ball out of the centre, physically intimidate players and drift off his man and kick goals when needed. He is now in his prime years for a ruckman and, despite a number of relatively small set-backs during the pre-season, is expected to again dominate in 2009.
What will he be able to do during the upcoming pre-season?
Its all about graduating his running from one stage to the next, as well as working on stength and balance throughout.
If all goes well would expect him to be pretty close to full training after the christmas break.
David Hille was a standout early, throwing himself into the thick of the action in his first hit-out since suffering a knee injury in ANZAC Day last year.
Starting out in the goalsquare, Hille provided a handy tall marking option where he converted the first major of the match before moving into the ruck mid-way through the first term. He moved well around the ground and looks well on track to make a return to senior football sooner rather than later.
Coach Matthew Knights was pleased with Hille's work, both in attack and in the ruck, and said it gave him hope the big man would play against Geelong on March 26.
"He's cleared all the hurdles up to this point with his rehabilitation, so if he keeps going down this track, we'd be pretty confident he could line up," he said.
"He's a leader of this football club and he's got a big, strong body, which is really important against the really good sides in the competition.
