Tigers announce new sponsor - By Clark McGrath, Sunday, 23rd September 2007

Richmond announced today that they would be jointly sponsored for the 2008 season by Winfield and Carlton Draught. Blatantly ignoring advertising laws the two have combined to offer the Tigers a fantastic deal for the season valued at over 2.5 million dollars.

Wallace OUT, Flanagan IN - By Lee Gilchrist, Sunday, 30th September 2007

Terry Wallace’s ‘five year plan’ is no longer an issue for Richmond supporters as he was sacked today and replaced by 18-year-old football commentator and analyst Tom Flanagan. Richmond CEO Greg Miller today said the decision had been building for months after listening to Flanagan’s knowledge during his calls at the Caulfield Grammar 1st XVIII games. Wallace was shocked and offended by the decision to elect a novice and lashed out during the press conference. “Flanagan’s a bum, he’s just a school kid who doesn’t know what he’s doing coaching a football club.” Flanagan was not fazed by Wallace’s age bashing, calm and confident at the press conference with Miller. “Terry seems to be a nice enough guy, but there is no need to be bitter about it, we need someone who will take this club in a direction, not a one-trick-pony running around like a headless chook.”

Crawford sways Hird’s against retirement - Hayden Hilfenhaus, Saturday, 24th November 2007

James Hird, who announced he would be retiring at the end of this season has backflipped on the idea after a talk with former Hawthorn captain and fellow panellist on The Footy Show, Shane Crawford. Hird first announced that this would be his last year 2006 on The Footy Show; “I’ll go for one more year then that’s it.” Obviously this was not to be the case.

The brownlow medallists got together yesterday and Crawford, speaking of the joy his team has had this season with the first Hawks finals campaign since 2001, was somehow able to sway Hird from retirement. “After speaking with Crawf (Shane Crawford) and a few other people close to me, I have decided to reconsider my decision to retire.”

Hird is not the only one who surprised the football community by reconsidering retirement with Nathan Buckley, Robert Harvey, Mark Ricciuto and Chris Scott all giving it one more go.

Tigers ecstatic to pick up Jolly
by Martyn Warne - Saturday, 18th December 2007

Richmond were delighted today to secure the services of premiership ruckman Darren Jolly. The former Swan and Demon who wanted to return to Melbourne to raise his son closer to his family was also delighted to be at the Tigers. Youngsters Travis Casserly, Daniel Connors and Richmond’s 2nd, 4th and 5th round selections were moved onto the Swans for Jolly.

In another big trade coup Brisbane livewire Jared Brennan has moved to St.Kilda for the Saints’ first round selection. Brennan said he was happy to be in Melbourne, “I’ve got a fair few friends and family down here so I’m not complaining, I hope to have a great start here at the Saints.”

The big trade with Chris Judd finally went through today with Carlton giving up Brendan Fevola for the former Eagles’ captain. Luke McPharlin moved back to Melbourne after a few years in the West to settle at the Western Bulldogs, Jordan McMahon was happy to move to the sunny shores of Perth and play at Fremantle.

Scott West nominated himself for the pre-season draft after a fallout with Jason Akermanis and was picked up by the Crows in the PSD as a massive boost for their premiership chances. Finally, Chris Scott will finish his final season at the Bulldogs as well, Brisbane taking a gamble on out-of-favour key position player Andrew McDougall.

Dawes to miss season again
by Ricky MacGill - Thursday, 17th January 2008

Talented Collingwood full-forward Chris Dawes will miss another season after realising today he will need a second knee reconstruction after his previously injured ACL was found dark and swollen after training on Tuesday. “It’s really bad luck for Chris, he really works hard on the track and to see him unable to walk again is just shattering,” Collingwood vice-captain Ben Johnson said after training at the Lexus centre today.

On the eve of the NAB cup, Dawes has come to grips with the fact he won’t be in line for selection until very late in the finals. “29 weeks on the sidelines, that’s a hell of a long time.” When asked what the injury looked like Johnson replied. “His knee was the size of a cricket ball and it was a very dark purple colour, almost black. It’s just a pity the footballing public is yet to see his potential.” Dawes was drafted from Brighton Grammar School in Melbourne with Collingwood’s second round selection (Pick 28) in the 2006 National Draft.

More big name pre-season injuries
by Tait Bracken - Monday, 18th February 2008

Fremantle’s Chris Tarrant and Port Adelaide’s Justin Westhoff are the latest to succumb to the injury bug during the offseason, both suffering a osteitis pubis. Young gun Westhoff was one of the stars of last season and the Port Adelaide faithful will be saddened to know they won’t be seeing him play until at least the mid-season break. Tarrant’s injury however is worse as an indefinite diagnosis from the Fremantle medical staff means the injury could be career ending for the inconsistent forward.

Hawks hammer Tigers in Tassie
by Mitchell Hussey - Saturday, 23rd February 2008

Hawthorn have opened their NAB Cup in awesome style crushing Richmond by 73 points in Launceston on Saturday night. The Hawks with an inexperienced outfit scored seventeen goals to two after quarter time after Richmond took an early jump on them in the first quarter. Newly appointed captain Sam Mitchell, veteran defender Brent Guerra and wingman Clinton Young dominated around the ground but it was a very even performance overall by the Hawks who had only one player with under 10 touches.

Richmond started brilliantly with six goals to one in the opening term, Nathan Brown and Greg Tivendale running amuck but after that the side just stopped to a grinding halt as Hawthorn piled on goal after goal after goal. Guerra was the leading goalkicker with three but it was shared around with Jordan Lewis, Mitch Thorp, Jarryd Roughead, Lance Franklin and Young all booting two.

Richmond were completely outclassed all day with only Andrew Raines, who shut down Tim Boyle, figuring near the best players with 31 possesions and seven marks. New coach Tom Flanagan said they would have to put up a much stronger performance next week in their NAB Regional Challenge match against the Kangaroos on the Gold Coast next week if they were to turn around their wooden spoon performance last season.

Hawthorn........1.1.........8.6.........14.9......18.16 (124)

Pies outclass Hawks to bring home NAB cup
by Jaques Hodge - Friday, 15th March 2008

Collingwood have won the 2008 NAB cup with an incredible performance against Hawthorn at the Telstra Dome tonight. After limping into the grand final last week against Port Adelaide and without Anthony Rocca, Alan Didak, Josh Fraser and Tarkyn Lockyer (all injured) they dismantled Hawthorn with a frightening first term where they piled on ten goals to a scoreless Hawthorn outfit.

Travis Cloke set up the game with six in that first quarter but the game really wilted as a contest after that with both sides playing basically non-contact footy. Only seven goals were scored in the last three quarters but it was all over by quarter time. Dane Swan was best on ground with 37 touches and a goal.

Collingwood........10.7........10.16........11.18........14.18 (102)
Hawthorn.............0.0....kk....1.4............3.5.......k..3.7.. (25)

Best:
Collingwood: Swan, Cloke, Clement, Pendlebury, Buckley, Burns, Lonie, Shaw.

Hawthorn: Bateman, Roughead, Ryder.

Crows open their account
by Cullen Haddin, Sunday 29th March 2008

Adelaide have started their 2008 campaign in style with a 54-point win over last year’s wooden spooners at the MCG on Sunday night. Ian Perrie and Scott Thompson both booted four goals as the Crows won convincingly, 18.21 (129) to Richmond 10.15 (75).

Recruit of the year Scott West had 30 disposals and Thompson 28 as Adelaide blew away the Tigers in the first half. Fifteen goals to two by half time and the game was all over. Perrie’s performance was impressive, but he could’ve had many more goals than the four he kicked as he had 12 shots on goal for a return of 4.8.

Andrew Raines continued his NAB cup form and was best on ground for the Tigers with 37 possesions and Kayne Pettifer kicked 3 and racked up 23 touches. Nobody else even gave a whimper as the Crows ran all over the hapless Tiges. Ben Rutten taught youngster Jack Riewoldt a footballing lesson as he racked up 22 possesions rebounding from full-back and held Riewoldt to four possessions, all were shots on goal for a return of 2.2 for the day.

Coach Tom Flanagan was optimistic despite the hounding, “We don’t have the talent to cover the West’s and the Edwards’s and the Ricciuto’s and these sorts of players at the moment, but the boys are all developing nicely, watch Andrew Raines or Jake King, they never stop trying and that’s what I ask of my players. We were thumped in the first half but it was nice to see some fight in the second.”

Tigers gallant but Swans just too strong
by Monty Pietersen - Saturday, April 5 2008

The Sydney Swans have posted their first win of the season by 19 points over Richmond at the MCG today. But it wasn’t after a scare from the Tigers who led for most of the day before Adam Schnieder played an inspirational last quarter to guide the Swans home. Schneider kicked three goals and racked up 17 of 32 possesions in the final term to take the Swans back from beyond the brink after trailing by 21 points midway through the last quarter.

Sydney started hot favourites at $1.10 but it was the Tiges who came out firing, taking the lead shortly after quarter time, then piling on 5 unanswered goals in the second term to hold a handy nine point lead into the main break. Richmond kept up the intensity breaking even in the third with the Swans four goals apiece, and then kicked another two in the opening minutes of the final quarter to lead by 21 points with fifteen minutes left before Schneider worked his magic.

Graham Polak was fantastic for the Tigers holding Swans gun forward Ryan O’Keefe to just three possesions while racking up 31 himself at half-back. Second year defender Jake King held his own against the mercurial Nick Davis holding him goalless while picking up 22 possesions. Andrew Raines had the big job of containing Barry Hall and until he got injured in the shadows of three quarter time Raines had 27 possesions and had held Hall goalless. Unfortunately for the Tigers there was nobody to cover for Raines’ absence, youngster Adam Pattison conceding three majors to Hall in the final term.

Brett Kirk, along with Schneider dominated in the middle, picking up 29 possesions of his own. Tadhg Kennelly and Nick Fosdike were very good too, both picking up 26 possesions across half-back.

The Tigers just run out of legs with no interchange players by the end of the game, Kayne Pettifer concussed, Raines hobbling with an injured quad, Nathan Foley in hospital after a sickening head clash with Amon Buchanan and Jack Riewoldt couldn’t run out the games with chest pains. Coach Tom Flanagan said the injuries were a worry but the team’s performace was anything but, “Every player on that field tried his guts out today, Andrew (Raines) said to me late in the final quarter ‘let me go back on’, that’s how much fight this team’s showing, Browny (Nathan Brown) and Joel (Bowden) are leading by example out there and it’s fantastic to see. A win is just around the corner for the boys if we keep this intensity.”

Richmond.....1.7........6.9........10.10......12.11 (83)
Sydney....k...3.3........5.6...........9.8.......15.12 (102)

Best:
Sydney: Schneider, Kirk, Buchanan, Kennelly, Fosdike, McVeigh.
Richmond: Raines, Polak, J.Bowden, P.Bowden, Brown, Hyde, King.

Goals:
Sydney: Schneider 3, Hall 3, Buchanan 2, J.Bolton 2, Fosdike, McVeigh, Kirk, O’Keefe, Richards.
Richmond: P.Bowden 3, Riewoldt 3, Cotchin 2, Tivendale 2, Tambling, Deledio.
