Swans' four-year offer to ruckman
Jenny McAsey | September 22, 2007

THE Sydney Swans have offered premiership ruckman Darren Jolly a lucrative four-year contract to stay at the club.
Jolly, 25, held lengthy talks with the club on Thursday and is closely considering the deal, which would give him the long-term stability he is looking for.
Jolly, who shared rucking duties with ex-Hawthorn player Peter Everitt this year, is understood to have been contemplating a return to Melbourne to be closer to both his and his wife's family.
He is also believed to have been concerned about the financial strains of raising a family in Sydney, where housing is far more expensive than Melbourne.
A four-year contract is unusual, with most players signing for two or three years.
With the veteran Everitt, 33, expected to retire at the end of 2008, Sydney is keen to secure Jolly's services for the long term.
"More and more teams now are trying to lock away players," Sydney coach Paul Roos said yesterday. "We value him as a player, and ruckmen are hard to come by, so we are hoping it gets sorted out ASAP. But we are still waiting to hear from his manager.
"We are reasonably positive about him staying, but we haven't officially heard yet as to what he is doing."
Jolly, who has been holidaying in Melbourne with his family, is managed by Melbourne-based Michael Quinlan.
While a number of clubs, including the Western Bulldogs, Carlton, Richmond and St Kilda are in the market for ruckmen, Jolly, whose contract expires in October, has not negotiated with any of them.
Originally from North Ballarat in regional Victoria, Jolly started his career with Melbourne in 2001. Three years ago, after limited opportunities, he was traded to Sydney in exchange for the club's first-round pick, selection No15.
While some critics said the Swans should not trade early picks, the club has been more than happy with its decision as Jolly has developed into one of the competition's leading ruckmen, and has played almost every game.

Seems generous but better than starting from scratch with another ruckman. He's a 25 yo ruckman with no history of significant injury - no reason he shouldn't be playing good footy in 4 years time.

Why are AFL players on good money sooking about living costs when there are ordinary Joe-Blows coping there just fine?

Couldn't agree more. I live in Sydney on a normal wage and I manage, however I can't afford to buy property so I am renting, whereas these footballers can afford to buy property and they will more than make up the difference of the cost when they sell it. They are becoming greedy! Personally apart from propery I do not belive the cost of living in Sydney is any dearer than the rest of the country, in fact it seems dearer in places like Tasmania, where I lived for 30 years.

Sydney have to.

1) Evererit was very average in 2007 - 2008 his last season
2) No up and coming ruckmen on their list (Doyle injured more than N.Buckley)
3) Have never developed their own ruckmen, bought mature aged players
4) Most importantly, without abovve average ruckmen - Sydney's game plan goes to sh!t. They rely on stoppages

Quite simply no Jolly in 2007 - no Swans (unless they nab someone else).

4 years is too much........he wants to go back to Melbourne, end of story and he will go back within 2 years.........spending more time in Sydney won't change his mind.

Swans should offer him what he wants.......but he won't accept 4 years.

Pies should offer him 3yrs...coming home to melbourne would almost get Jolly over the line
Respectfully disagree.

I'd rather we went after King, if fit enough would have a similar impact, and cost MUCH less. When he bows out, we should have a 2007-drafted ruckman or two coming into their own.

Jolly is only 26, with 5-6yrs left...King and Hudson are both 29 and not very mobile

The Swans have several young Ruckmen. Here are all the Ruckemn on our list

Earl Shaw - 199cm - 20 years 9 months
Jesse White - 196cm - 19 years 8 months
Darren Jolly - 200cm - 25 years 10 months
Peter Everitt - 203cm - 33 years 4 months
Stephen Doyle - 204cm - 26 years 2 months
Daniel Currie - 200cm - 19 years 7 months

So the Swans do have 3 young potential Ruckmen who could replace Jolly if necessary.

Seriously he should be put down, if he leaves or not!!

We give him a chance, cost us a premiership, now wants more money or out!!

Jessie White is more a KP Player than a Ruckman and Earl Shaw is on the Rookie List after being delisted from our Senior List at the end of last year. Currie is a long term prospect, but won't be ready to go at the start of next season, so that would leave us with only Everitt with one year remaining and Doyle who would be looking likely at being delisted.

So keeping Jolly is important and a 4 year deal isn't that crazy when you consider his age, health and ability. I doubt the deal would be a cap braker as well so heck an extra year on top of what he was asking, I don't see what the problem is.

No because Simmond's deal isn't a lucrative one.

Does it state in that article how much Jolly would get each season? No it doesn't.

Lucrative could just mean the length of the contract.

Richmond supporters gave it to us for giving Brad Ottens $400,000 a season, and that doesn't look too bad right now does it.

Having mentioned that Jolly is concerned over the financial strain in living in Sydney, I would think when they said lucrative they meant it in a fiscal sense. Since when has lucrative meant length of contract anyway.

Why are you ripping me about Ottens, its not like we could convince him to stay, he wanted to leave.

Great move if true, aslong as he's happy in Sydney. If he plays like he's miserable and with no passion, then this will be a waste of a signature for us. I think he'll have a great season in 2008 though.
