AFL 2008 Season (Sumner Times)

Since it is a month until the National Draft i will start a story, I have made all the trades thru the real AFL, all the retired players are gone, but still the delisted players, are still on their main lists. This story will go until the National draft is completed.

Re: AFL 2008 Season (Sumner Times)

ADELAIDE
HAVING been a relatively quiet trade player in recent years, the Crows were heavily involved in this year's exchange period. Adelaide was involved in the first official deal, when it gave up running half-back Martin Mattner to Sydney in return for pick No.28.

It was then part of the third trade deal of the week, when emerging ruckman John Meesen returned to his native Victoria, landing at Melbourne.

On the final day, it ontraded selections No.28 and No.37 to snare Port Adelaide 2007 Grand Final player Brad Symes and 200cm tall Brad Moran.

Effectively it swapped talls Meesen for Moran and defenders Mattner for Symes.

Ruckman Ben Hudson also gained his wish, being traded to the Western Bulldogs in a deal which netted Adelaide selections No.30 and No.38. Overall, it was solid trade period from the Crows.

Traded
Martin Mattner to Sydney.
John Meesen to Melbourne.
Ben Hudson to the Western Bulldogs.
Round two on-traded Selection (No.28) from Sydney to Port Adelaide.
Round three on-traded Selection (No.37) from Melbourne to the Kangaroos.
Round three selection (No.43) to the Western Bulldogs.

Received
Brad Moran from the Kangaroos.
Brad Symes from Port Adelaide.
Round two selection (No.30) from West Coast, via Western Bulldogs on-trade.
Round three selection (No.38) from the Western Bulldogs.
Round two Selection (No.28) from Sydney, then on-traded to Port Adelaide.
Round three Selection (No.37) from Melbourne, then on-traded to the
Kangaroos.

BRISBANE LIONS
ALTHOUGH the Lions lost promising ruckman Cameron Wood to Collingwood – and in the process briefly acquired selection No.14 – it did result in claiming classy midfielder and 2005 Melbourne best-and-fairest winner Travis Johnstone.

The recruitment of Johnstone adds to an excellent midfield, which already has the likes of Simon Black, Nigel Lappin, Luke Power, Tim Notting, Jed Adcock and Michael Rischitelli.

Premiership player Richard Hadley was the final trade of this year's exchange period when he moved to Carlton for pick No.52.

Traded
Cameron Wood to Collingwood.
Richard Hadley to Carlton.
Round one on-traded selection (No.14) from Collingwood to Melbourne.

Received
Travis Johnstone from Melbourne.
Round four selection (No.52) from Carlton.

Round one selection (No.14) from Collingwood, then on-traded to Melbourne.

CARLTON
THE Eagle finally landed at Carlton, when the Blues gained arguably the best player in the game – Chris Judd. After almost a month of intense speculation, Carlton managed to secure the 2006 premiership captain and 2004 Brownlow Medallist in a deal that saw emerging key forward Josh Kennedy return to his home state. The Blues also had to give up two top 20 selections – No.3 and No.20 – and in return received No.46 along with Judd.

Late on the final day of the trade period, the Blues gained Brisbane Lions premiership player Richard Hadley for pick No.52 – the last trade for 2007.

Traded
Josh Kennedy to West Coast.
Round one selection (No.three) to West Coast.

Round two selection (No.20) to West Coast.

Round four selection (No.52) to the Brisbane Lions.

Received
Chris Judd from West Coast.
Richard Hadley from the Brisbane Lions.
Round three selection (No.46) from West Coast.

COLLINGWOOD
A RUCKMAN was a major priority for the Magpies in the off-season and they landed a beauty, securing the services of Brisbane Lions youngster Cameron Wood. The 204cm ruckman, who was a 2007 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee, has had three seasons at the Lions, although he now looms as a decade player for the Pies.

Collingwood had to relinquish pick No.14 in order to claim Wood, although he was somewhat of a steal when he slid through to No.18 when claimed by the Lions in 2004. A ruck combination of Josh Fraser and Wood is a tantalising prospect for the Magpies.

Ben Davies was moved on to the Kangaroos.

Traded

Ben Davies to the Kangaroos.
Round one selection (No.14) to Melbourne, via Brisbane Lions on-trade.

Received
Cameron Wood from the Brisbane Lions.
Round six selection (No.96) from the Kangaroos.

ESSENDON
Did not trade
DESPITE speculation that Kepler Bradley would be moved on, a trade didn't eventuate, although there was talk that he was almost traded to Fremantle late on the last day of trade week. Ricky Dyson was also in the mix to join the Dockers, although a deal was not stuck. Mark Johnson also remains a Bomber after being mooted in trade talk.

FREMANTLE
Did not trade
FREMANTLE made late bids for Kepler Bradley and Ricky Dyson from the Bombers, but neither player is on the move. Emerging Fremantle forward Ryan Murphy also remains with Fremantle, although there was speculation he could return to Victoria.

GEELONG
IT MAY have surprised many to see 2007 premiership player Steven King and forward Charlie Gardiner traded for just pick No.90, but this decision is believed to be TPP (Total Player Payments) related, freeing up some salary cap space for the Cats. There is also some goodwill in this deal, as Geelong is highly unlikely to use this selection, now that clubs are not bound to use late picks that have been exchanged. A club still must have its mandatory three selections at the NAB AFL Draft, but it is extremely unlikely Geelong would have its third pick at No.90.

New South Welshman Henry Playfair returned to his native state, having landed at Sydney. In return, the Cats have gained another draft selection (No.44).

Traded
Henry Playfair to Sydney.
Steven King to St Kilda.
Charlie Gardiner to St Kilda.
Tim Callan to Western Bulldogs.

Received
Round three selection (No.44) from Sydney.
Round four selection (No.62) from West Coast, via Western Bulldogs on-trade.
Round six selection (number 90) from St Kilda.

HAWTHORN
Did not trade
ALTHOUGH a major player in recent years, Hawthorn was not involved in any deals in 2007 despite speculation it was interested in Richmond's Danny Meyer.

KANGAROOS
THE Roos gained Sam Power (Western Bulldogs) and Ben Davies (Collingwood) and traded developing tall Brad Moran to Adelaide. It also gained pick No.37 and gave No.96 to the Magpies.

Traded
Brad Moran to Adelaide.
Round three selection (No.48) to the Western Bulldogs.
Round Six Selection (No.96) to Collingwood.

Received
Ben Davies from Collingwood.
Sam Power from the Western Bulldogs.
Round three selection (No.37) from Melbourne, via Adelaide on-trade.

MELBOURNE
THE DEMONS gave up 2005 Keith "Bluey" Truscott Trophy winner Travis Johnstone, who was also the No.1 draftee in 1997. It was a somewhat controversial trading by the red and blue – similar to when it traded Brownlow Medallist Shane Woewodin to Collingwood in 2002 – but the Demons gained a first-round draftee, snagging pick No.14. This pick was originally with Collingwood, before being ontraded to the Brisbane Lions.

Melbourne has added to its ruck stocks with the emerging John Meesen returning home after three seasons on Adelaide's list. Although Meesen played just two matches – in rounds 20 and 21 this year – it was understood he was homesick and eager to come back to Victoria. He was originally taken at No.8 overall in the 2004 NAB AFL Draft.

The Demons had completed their deals before Friday.

Traded
Travis Johnstone to the Brisbane Lions.
Round three selection (No.37) to the Kangaroos, via Adelaide on-trade.

Received
John Meesen from Adelaide.
Round one selection (No.14) from Collingwood, via Brisbane Lions on-trade.

PORT ADELAIDE
BRAD SYMES, who came into Port Adelaide's 2007 Grand Final side for the injured Michael Wilson, was traded to cross-town rival Adelaide, in an exchange for pick No.28.

Traded
Brad Symes to Adelaide.

Received
Round three selection (No.28) from Sydney, via Adelaide on-trade.

RICHMOND
THE Tigers have injected some good talent, having landed dashing defender Jordan McMahon (Western Bulldogs) and Mitch Morton (West Coast). The recruitment of Morton is fascinating, considering Richmond has the second pick in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft and it is believed his younger brother Cale is the on the Tigers' radar for that pick.

It was also understood that Mitch Morton may have been claimed by Richmond via the December NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft as an uncontracted player if this deal had not occurred. Morton was a father/son selection in the 2004 NAB AFL Draft (No.44 overall), yet many clubs believed he would have been a top-10 selection back then.

Traded
Round two selection (No.19) to the Western Bulldogs.
Round three selection (No.35) to Western Bulldogs, via West Coast on-trade.

Received
Jordan McMahon from the Western Bulldogs.
Mitch Morton from West Coast.

ST KILDA
THE Saints were heavily involved in the trade period, acquiring 2007 Geelong premiership player Steven King and forward Charlie Gardiner for selection No.90. This decision is largely believed to be TPP related, yet it was also a goodwill gesture from the Cats. Coach Ross Lyon has also reacquainted himself with Adam Schneider and Sean Dempster, after the Sydney duo landed at St Kilda. In return, the Saints gave the Swans a second-round draft selection (No.26). It was a fruitful trade period for St Kilda.

Traded
Round two selection (No.26) to Sydney.
Round six selection (No.90) to Geelong.

Received
Sean Dempster from Sydney.
Adam Schneider from Sydney.
Steven King from Geelong.
Charlie Gardiner from Geelong.

SYDNEY
THE Swans were involved in the first deal of this year's exchange period when they acquired rebounding half-back Martin Mattner from the Crows. Sydney also added height to its squad when it claimed New South Welshman Henry Playfair from Geelong, who played just one match for the Cats this year.

Traded
Sean Dempster to St Kilda.
Adam Schneider to St Kilda.

Received
Martin Mattner from Adelaide.
Henry Playfair from Geelong.

WEST COAST
WITH premiership captain Chris Judd was heading back home to Victoria, West Coast was heavily involved in the exchange period. West Coast managed to land emerging key forward Josh Kennedy from Carlton, along with two top-20 selections – No.3 and No.20.

Emerging midfielder Mitch Morton was also traded to Richmond, but there was speculation he may have gone to Punt Rd without West Coast gaining any compensation, as an uncontracted player via the December NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft.

Traded
Chris Judd to Carlton.
Mitch Morton to Richmond.

Received
Josh Kennedy from Carlton.

WESTERN BULLDOGS
THE Bulldogs were very active on the final day of trading, acquiring Adelaide ruckman Ben Hudson and Geelong youngster Tim Callan,
Traded
Jordan McMahon to Richmond.
Sam Power to the Kangaroos.

Received
Ben Hudson from Adelaide.
Tim Callan from Geelong.
