Westhoff was selected by Port Adelaide in the 2006 draft using their fifth round pick, being the 71st pick overall.
Westhoff was recruited to play as a ruckman for Port Adelaide, but has consolidated himself as a key Forward. One of the best forwrads i've ever seen, says Alex Jesaulenko
Port Adelaide career
2007
When drafted into the Power, Westhoff's appointed player-mentor was skipper Warren Tredrea.
On April 17 Westhoff was controversially suspended for two games for high contact on North Adelaide captain Darryl Wintle during Central District's 7 goal defeat of the Roosters in Round 1 of the SANFL. The suspension effectively prevented him from playing for three weeks, as Central Districts had a bye during that period.
On June 3 Westhoff's consistent goal kicking dominance at local level saw him make his AFL debut for Port Adelaide against Hawthorn. In an eventful debut he performed strongly, booting three goals (including 2 from his first 2 kicks) to become the first Power player to register a trio of majors on debut. Westhoff was also reported for charging the Hawks' Clinton Young in the last quarter, however this was later dismissed by the match review panel, as they deemed the contact unintentional and unavoidable.
Westhoff had his career best game against the West Coast Eagles in round 15 on July 14 kicking 4 goals, including 2 from contested marks on reigning All-Australian full back Darren Glass. Power coach Mark Williams praised the performance by calling his forward line work 'brilliant'. Westhoff's performance was further recognised with the AFL rising star nomination for Round 15.
Westhoff's strong season ended up in him finishing 4th in the 2007 AFL Rising Star competition gathering a total of 10 votes. He was also recognised with the Gavin Wanganeen Medal and the Best First Year Player award at the Power's club champion venue.
Cult status
Justin Westhoff is tall and slightly built, yet takes strong marks overhead. Commentator Dennis Cometti lightheartedly noted in the 2007 clash against Geelong at Kardinia Park, 'Westhoff looks like he couldn't bench-press his own socks' and in the 2007 Qualifying Final versus West Coast, 'just imagine next year; he'll actually have shoulders'.
His debut season has endeared him to Power fans, and already has a number of nicknames. He is regularly referred to by Power fans as 'The Hoff' (a nod to actor David Hasselhoff).
His untidy hair and face also bear an uncanny resemblance to actor Jon Heder's movie character Napoleon Dynamite.
Westy or Hoff. I’m not a big fan of “Hoff” because I think the boys are probably paying me out, which is never good.
Do you have any pre-game superstitions?
I’d say more routine than superstition, but I always put my left boot on before my right.
Most hated training drill?
Just running. There isn’t one particular drill I hate, but I prefer the ones with as least running as possible.
Favourite actor?
Definitely not the “Hoff” [David Hasslehoff]! The sooner I shake that nickname the better I think. I don’t really watch that many movies.
If you could take one skill from any player in the competition, what would it be?
Warren Tredrea’s marking ability. It’s something I’ve focused on with Port Adelaide and just playing on “Tredders” I’ve already learned so much.
If you won a million dollars, how would you spend it?
I’d give a bit to my family. Probably buy a house, or a few houses actually, on the beach somewhere.
What’s in your locker at the club?
A lot of paper and junk I think. Probably a fair few memos, I really should clean it out once in a while.
Who would you have on your table at the Brownlow Medal?
I’d like to have a table full of the guns or past Brownlow winners. Maybe guys like Adam Goodes, Nathan Buckley and other legends of the game; that would be fantastic.
Who was your hero growing up?
Gary Ablett Sr from Geelong. He was just a freak player and kicked a lot of goals. I think his birthday is actually the same as mine, so that was something I liked growing up. Kicking 100 goals for a season is something you just don’t see much any more.
Who is the biggest prankster at the club?
Definitely Motts [Daniel Motlop], he’s always having a good time and just does it subtly.
What’s your trademark dish in the kitchen?
Living with my brother we’re kind of forced to cook, I think. Probably pasta, which it the easiest thing to do!
Where would we find you on your day off?
Last year I studied architecture at university but I’ve deferred that this year to focus on footy, so I’d probably be at the beach or at a mate’s house relaxing. Anywhere I can just do nothing, which is the best way to spend your day off. I don’t mind a hit of golf. I’m not great, but I’m not too bad either.
