He, along with David Rodan, his cousin, is one of two known current Fijian-born players in the Australian Football League with the Port Adelaide Football Club.
Carlile played basketball and soccer as a junior before beginning his Australian Rules career semi-professionally with the Wangaratta Rovers. The big bodied 191cm and 93kg Carlile was selected by Port Adelaide at pick 44 in the 2005 AFL Draft from the Murray Bushrangers.
He made his Australian Football League debut in Round 16, 2006 in the match against St Kilda Football Club at Aurora Stadium. Since debuting, he has made several appearances in defence with the affiliated South Adelaide Football Club in the SANFL.
In 2007, he played his first game for the year in round 14, playing 7 consecutive games in a relatively successful Port Adelaide team. He then played in the round 22 match, and the first week of the finals, but was dropped for the preliminary final in favour of experienced campaigner Darryl Wakelin.
Alipate got a few games under his belt this year with limited game time & he showed a lot of promise particularly his willingness to run the ball out of the backline. He still needs to work on some basic skills such as where he should position himself in a marking contest as he was out bodied/out muscled on more than a few occasions this year, but if he hits the gym & bulks up a little more he could be the gorilla full back that Port have been looking for (think Mal Michael). His kicking is pretty good & his decision making wasn't too bad from what i could remember but he's a long term prospect so give the kid a chance & hopefully the kid can hold down the full back position for the next ten years.
Carlile up to the challenge

REPLACING 261-game veteran Darryl Wakelin was never going to be an easy task, but the Power are confident they’ve found their man.
Fijian-born defender Alipate “Bobby” Carlile played nine games in 2007 as Port Adelaide prepared for life after Wakelin. Now, the 20-year-old is ready to make the full back spot his.
Carlile, who is a cousin to Power onballer David Rodan, stood Warren Tredrea in the club’s internal trial on Saturday night and kept the four-time All-Australian goalless.
Defender Troy Chaplin said Carlile had been working hard to add to his 192cm, 95kg frame during the summer months.
“Alipate Carlile has been fantastic on the track,” Chaplin said.
“He’s improved his fitness, he’s been lifting heavy weights in the gym and he’s really bulking up.
“Bobby’s a big boy, so he’s fairly strong. He’s also quick across the ground and he has great skills, so it’s just his inexperience [that’s a weakness] at the moment.
“He’s only played 10 games, but hopefully he can play 22 this year and really build on that experience to become a great full back.
“I think the way he played on Tredders the other night showed that he’s certainly got the ability.”
Wakelin sacrificed part of his AFL swansong to help develop his apprentices, which included both Carlile and Chaplin.
Chaplin said it would take more than just one person to compensate for the leadership and stability Wakelin once provided in defence.
“Darryl is going to be a huge loss to the side,” Chaplin said.
“Obviously, Darryl had more than 250 games of experience and with Michael Wilson (achilles) down too, it does make our back line inexperienced.
“It’s not going to be a smooth transition with Alipate, but it’s a transition he’s willing to take on and one we’ve got to be willing to help him out with.

ANY unease Port Adelaide had about Alipate Carlile holding down a key defensive role this AFL season is now well and truly gone.
With Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich looming large at Noarlunga on Saturday - when he started with two goals in the first term - 20-year-old Carlile was given the task of quelling the All-Australian originally assigned to defender Toby Thurstans.
Carlile, a mainstay of SANFL club South Adelaide's defence for much of the past two seasons, not only held his own but kept Pavlich scoreless.
"He was playing on the best centre half-forward in the league and to play on him for probably three quarters of the game and Pavlich not have any influence, I was very pleased for him," Port defensive coach Adam Kingsley said.
"I think he's going to be a very, very good defender. He's big and strong (192cm and 95kg) but he can also run and kick the ball well. I'm very excited by what I see in him."
Kingsley was also impressed with running defenders Paul Stewart and Nick Lower. The pair failed to play an AFL game between them last season but they are suddenly in the mix to front AFL premier Geelong at AAMI Stadium on Easter Thursday.
"They are guys who have played well this pre-season and will come into contention for round one," Kingsley said.

I am intereste din hearing your thoughts about this guy?
When i look at your team, i think your weakness is your backline, especially if Chad plays up forward.
In saying that, does this mean Carlile will play backline all year?
FB for that matter?
he has impressed me alot, and yes he will more than likely play FB for the whole year, barring injury, or a sudden loss of form.
he has looked good in the games he has played so far, and i'm thinking that we have a keeper.
defence is without a doubt a big weakness, and the experience of Wakelin is going to be badly missed.
Chaplin and Thurstans are in poor form too at the moment, and without WIlson back there, we are really struggling.
But our midfield is struggling too, alot of players are out of form.
Well, like the critics are saying, Port Adelaide are the potential team ready to explode.
No wins yet and i expect you to lose on Sunday too.
You should still make finals though.
So tell me a bit about Carlile?
I had not noticed him until the other week.
Cheers for that.
He looks damn good ey.
He does seem to get a fair bit of the ball though for a backmen. 10 marks last week.
Is that a one off or does he play that running off from the backline kind of role?
^Alipate Carlile is my boy. I've seen the talent in him since his first game and have been a big fan since. I think he has the potential to be an absolute star FB for the next ten years.
He's not really the type of player to provide massive drive out of the back 50, however, we don't know enough about his game in the afl to see what exactly he can/will develop into. When he first started playing, I saw him as your classic FB (eg. d wakelin), however one of carlile's advantages is that he has very good pace.
In the match against Sydney, he did get a lot of the ball and in my opinion used it well. I think his biggest attribute is (or is going to be) his one on one ability in contests - we don't need to rely on 5 players gangraping one kp forward.

I'm hoping for all the best with this guy.
Remember, he is only 20.
Dunno about the first bit. He may well lose some of that pace as he bulks up but I (and a number of other posters here I believe) can see a Gorilla smashing packs and dominating tall forwards then taking the ball away with pace himself. A combo of Gorilla and Cat: The Bear... There's a fair bit of Mal Michael about him I reckon.
Our next FB.........in the making.........I think he is a great asset to the club. What I like about Alipate is that he doesn't get intimmidated by bigger fowards, I actually think its the reverse with some forwards.

Actually he's not our next FB, he is our current FB.
Chaplin is still our next CHB though.
