Round Five: Brisbane Lions vs Hawthorn, Gabba

Hawthorn has got its season back on track with two consecutive wins coming after an impressive victory against the Lions on their home turf. Hawthorn looked in control all night in their 15.16 (106) to 8.17 (65) win, in front of 25,382 Lions fans.

Sam Mitchell played his finest performance as skipper, inspiring the side to their 3rd win of the year. Mitchell had 21 kicks, 13 handballs, 10 clearances and booted 3 goals in a four quarter performance. Jarryd Roughead, also 3 goals, was the main forward, as Franklin missed opportunities, held goalless by Daniel Merrett before the Lion defender was helped off the ground by trainers with an expected knee reconstruction required.

Former captain Shane Crawford also looked good with 28 disposals while Travis Tuck and Luke Hodge also found the pill, thanks to a solid performance by lone ruckman Robert Campbell where he had 20 hitouts and 17 touches.

Brisbane's Matthew Moody played a solid game while Jared Brennan was the only multiple goalscorer, with Jonathan Brown also held goalless by Stephen Gilham.

Brisbane remain with only one victory in the 2008 season, and will miss their full back for the remainder of the home and away season, whilst Hawthorn have moved into the eight.

Round Six: Hawthorn vs Richmond, MCG

The Hawthorn Football Club and Lance "Buddy" Franklin are up and running, after a four goal win over Richmond in front of 48,142 fans at the MCG. Franklin steered the Hawks home in there 15.13 (103) to 11.13 (79) display, kicking 3 majors whilst having 27 touches and taking a career high 18 marks around the ground.

Jarryd Roughead, 21 disposals and 11 marks was also a target, while Robert Campbell continued his solid form with 24 touches, 16 hitouts and 2 goals. Despite Roughead and Franklin controlling the forward zone, Campbell Brown was a key with 18 touches, 2 goals and keeping Nathan Brown quiet.

Sam Mitchell had 27 touches after an impressive display last week, while Shane Crawford and Brad Sewell were terrific in close.

The battle of the Tucks was interesting, with Shane winning out with 24 touches, where Travis managed 18 touches, with both brothers kicking a goal early in the game. Their dual was exciting to watch, but the elder much stronger in close.

Matthew Richardson was terrific for the Tigers, booting an inaccurate 4.6 with his 20 kicks and 9 marks in a close to best on ground display.

Stephen Gilham showed his composure against the Tigers with another top effort down back

Round Seven: Hawthorn vs Collingwood, MCG

The Magpies have clung on in a thriller at the MCG in front of 69,785 fans tonight, defeating the Hawks by 3 points, 18.24 (132) to 20.9 (129). The Pies, with the breeze, kicked the opening five goals of the final term to look in perfect position after the Hawks were up by two goals at the last change. The Hawks booted three goals late in the game, but the siren beat the home side.

Travis Cloke and Scott Pendlebury delivered exceptional performances, with Pendlebury kicking 2 goals from the midfield and having 24 touches while Cloke had the ball on a string with 24 touches, 10 marks and booting 4 majors.

Nick Maxwell, Scott Burns and Shane O'Bree were also very good in the Pies win.

Hawthorn had its fair share of performers, with skipper Sam Mitchell continuing his red hot form, having 38 touches and 11 clearances, with help from rucking duo Robert Campbell and debutant Brent Renouf.

Cult figure Lance Franklin was also at his dominant best, booting five goals in the shootout, while Cyril Rioli and Stuart Dew chipped in with two each. Travis Tuck, Grant Birchall and Clinton Young all enjoyed good games also.

Grant Birchall had 22 touches off half-back, but wasn't enough to get the Hawks across the line

Round Eight: Hawthorn vs Port Adelaide, Aurora Stadium

Beau Dowler has stepped up in what Alistair Clarkson described pre-match as a "make or break" type of game for the youngster. Dowler, coming into the game with one goal in his past three games, turned it on for the 12,465 Launceston fans, booting six goals, with five coming after half-time.

Hawthorn booked in its fifth win for the season, and fourth victory in the last five matches, with a 20.15 (135) to 16.18 (114) score line against Grand Finallists Port Adelaide.

After a close opening three quarters, where Port looked on top of the midfield, Brent Renouf's move into the ruck helped the charge forward, with Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge breaking tags to help steer the home side into the clear with five goals to two in the final term.

Dowler impressed, kicking two in the third term and three, including the sealer, in the final quarter. Cyril Rioli also enjoyed a good game, kicking the other two final term goals. Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin kicked four between them, to keep the tall timber as potent as it could.

Damon White didn't give up for Port Adelaide, coming home with five goals to his name, with a goal in each quarter, whilst David Rodan booted three off half-forward. Peter Burgoyne was moved into the midfield after half-time after a good start in defence, but he provided run, kicking two goals after the main break, while Wilson and Cornes tagged well.

Port will be missing Matt Thomas for up to two months while Troy Chaplin came off in the opening minutes with a broken finger, also expecting 2-4 weeks out.

Beau Dowler delivered the best game of his short career with a six-goal haul against the Power

Round Nine: Melbourne vs Hawthorn, M.C.G.

Melbourne have done just what the Hawks did to them in round one in revenge and payback, with a 7-goal to 1 final term to defeat the Hawks, as 34,518 fans watched in amazement. The Punt Road end had a breeze, in which was significant enough to allow the Demons a chance in the final term to win 17.21 (123) to 18.13 (121).

The Demons were going the scoring end, with 26 of the 35 goals in the match kicked to the left side of the screen. Brad Miller turned into the hero, displaying his best with six goals, three of which came late in the game. David Neitz and Brad Green were also good servants in front of the goals, while Russell Robertson was terrific up the ground.

The Demon defence held up in the final quarter also, led by Jarred Rivers and Daniel Bell, combining 33 possessions and 21 marks between them.

Hawthorn were unlucky not to get the victory through a tremendous team effort, with all players finding the ball on ten or more occassions. Sam Mitchell continued his Brownlow form with 32 disposals while Travis Tuck collected the pill 25 times.

Stuart Dew kicked 3 goals in the opening term, having 20 touches in a game where he was needing a form boost. Brent Guerra also did himself confidence with three goals.

Brent Guerra celebrates one of his three goals in a form boosting performance.

Round Ten: Hawthorn vs Western Bulldogs, Aurora Stadium

The Western Bulldogs have claimed back there premiership contender status with an amazing win over the Hawks in Launceston, a 18.14 (122) to 16.11 (107) victory. It was set up for a great final quarter, with both sides locked at 87 each going into the final term, but consistency across the board paid off for the Dogs.

An even performance, Brad Johnson, Robert Murphy and Scott Welsh were all focul points, each kicking three goals, while Mitch Hahn booted two with the entire forward line potent.

Adam Cooney continued good form with a close to best on ground display, winning 25 touches and kicking two goals. Jason Akermanis was also entertaining, while Dale Morris was moved onto Mark Williams, where he held his own and won the contest after quarter time.

Mark Williams booted four goals in the opening term, but Morris held him goalless after the first change. Lance Franklin however was unstoppable, kicking seven goals with his 16 kicks and 11 marks.

The midfield did enough to contribute, with Sam Mitchell another excellent performance, with 33 disposals and supported by Shane Crawford and Travis Tuck, but it was the defence that proved lack of quality, with Stephen Gilham, Trent Croad and Campbell Brown all off there season form, while Brent Guerra had a shocker, having five goals kicked on him by three seperate opponents in short time.

Clinton Young will face the MRP or tribunal after a brain fade, elbowing Nathan Eagleton, who would miss the rest of the game as a precaution, despite unconcussed. Likely to face up to a month in the stands.

Shane Crawford has been an important cog in the midfield once more in 2008
