Last October I did the Trek with a buch of West Coast supporters as well as a solitary Freo, Bulldog and Hawk supporter. It was a fantastic trip and a wonderful experiance - so much so that I am considering revisiting PNG to do the trek again this time in the alternate direction.

I plan to head across next year sometime during Febuary-March which gives ample time to build fitness and get organised. I thought I might see if there was any interest from the Bigfooty lot in getting a Trek organised.

Last time we used Kokodatrekking and I would look to using them again. A good company that offers a well run trek. Ideally the trek size would be 10 people. We met a lot of other groups that had some 60 odd people in them (porters and trekkers) and it was a shambles.

So - if any one is interested and you have nine or so days to get lost in the wilderness - post here and we will see what we can get organised.

I'd put my hand up but how the bloody hell am I meant to get there? What an experience it could be.

been thinking about this for a few months now.....
checked out that link, looks intimidating and i keep fairly fit.

Please do. If you are fairly fit then you should have no real problems with trek.

Opting for a porter (which I didn`t do - but will certainly do this time around) takes the weight off and injects some cash into the locals bank accounts.

One of the guys in our group did an excellent write up of his experiance.

It can be viewed here if anyone is interested. It is quite long but worth the read.

Pre Trek Preparation

I had the luxury of having a brother who walked the Kokoda Track with Kokoda Trekking (KTL) last year, so he was able to give us some really sound advice in advance.

The first piece of advice is to get fit.

You will spend one 8 hour day walking solidly uphill with your (about 8 Kg) day pack on your back. Other days you will spend a very long time walking downhill which is actually harder. Do lots of walking up and down steep hills.

The second piece of advice is to get your malaria medication

This isn’t difficult – just go to your doctor.

Most malaria medications need to be started a couple of days before you head to New Guinea – check with your doctor.

Malaria is one of those diseases that mutates regularly, so get up to date info and get the right pills. Different doctors will prescribe different medication so don’t be surprised if your trekking mates have pills different to yours.

The malaria medication will be a PROPHYLAXIS. This type of medication will not cure you if you get malaria. Also, it will not guarantee that you won’t get malaria. All it will do is dramatically reducing your likelihood of getting it.

There is a group of students from my school (& the area, I think) that are going over to do the trek these holidays I think, or later this year. They've been training for ages....

I'd love to do something like this but broke my leg real bad a few months back... can't walk yet, let alone train intensively!
