Powderfinger set to rock MCG

POWDERFINGER and Pete Murray will provide pre and post-match entertainment at the AFL grand final on September 27.

The band will headline the pre-match entertainment at the MCG, and then join Pete Murray for the post-match entertainment in front of 4300 corporate guests at Punt Road Oval.

Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning said the band was excited about performing at one of the country's biggest sporting events.

"To be a part of not only one of the biggest sporting events in Australia but also one of the biggest sporting events in the world is a tremendous honour," he said.

He said the band was working on a few ideas to make the performance particularly "special".

Last year's pre-match entertainment was provided by local Melbourne band Jet and the national anthem was sung by former actress and Rogue Traders' singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte.

AFL chief operating officer Gillon McLachlan said the league had put a lot of effort into the pre-match entertainment this year.

I don't care what anyone says, nothing will ever top the Dame Edna spectacular. Nah, Powderfinger should be alright if they play old stuff, On My Mind would be an obvious choice though. Real confident comments from Mr. McLachlan as well

Saw Powderfinger both nights they came to Bris with Silverchair last year, and they were awesome (so much so that Silverchair ended up being the "backup" act IMO).

About time the AFL had some quality perform on GF day, rather than Dame Edna and the Australian Idols...

They've done well to get Powderfinger, sure is a step up from Australian Idol contestants.

The AFL had the perfect opportunity a few years ago when Green day were in the country and experiencing a resurgence of popularity. They had the perfect song "Wake me when when September ends"

I see how the AFL organise it. Pick the 2 most generic and bland artists doing the rounds and employ them.

Surely considering Gyroscope have the 2008 AFL anthem, they deserve a gig before this snoozefest?

Although, to be fair, Powderfinger and Murray are certainly better then Idols or soapie starlets.
