Call me a party pooper, but there still remains a mathematical chance that we could miss fourth spot. St Kilda are more than 4.5% behind us, but they can still overtake us if they have a big, big win against Essendon.

How big? In the order of about 95 points.

Improbable perhaps, but certainly not unheard of. St Kilda would be well aware of what they need to achieve. And Essendon are, well, a joke.

Here's my spreadsheet of scorelines that would do it for the Saints. If my calculations are correct.

the Bombers have a bit to play for, they have three players retiring so they will be keen to put in a strong performance

Your numbers are right, Dave.

St Kilda's highest score so far this year is 129 points, so the odds of them getting a 90 point win are pretty low without a big change in game plan. Even if they do open it up, Essendon would be a chance to score on the turnover, and a shootout doesn't help the Saints.

But just in case - c'mon Essendon. That truly hurts to say.

You aren't a Party Pooper, because there is no way St Kilda can make 4th

They can unfortunately.

I'd done the maths before I read Dave's post and I came up with the fact that just a little under a 100 points margin in favour of the Saints would do it eg his calculation of 95 points.

I've had a look at the Essendon side and they have a very depleted side tomorrow due to injury.

Hopefully they will play their little rings off and make it a very competitive game.

WOuldnt it be funny if it got so close, that the point that Sydney didnt get given in R17 against us, affects the outcome of 4th v 5th!! :D

Surelly they arent as bad as 2006 (was that there bad year?).

If there biggest loss to the saints is only 10 goal in their history and the saints highest score this year is only 10 goals and Essendon arent the worst team in the comp this year and the fact that the saints arent that good and the fact that Saints dont deserve top 4.

Essendon have no players left, and St Kilda are in reasonable form. I don't think St Kilda can be high scoring enough, but it isn't all that far fetched unfortunately.

I'm thinking the scoreline would be something simmilar to - St Kilda 18.15.123 def Essendon 12.7.79

St Kilda have made a massive improvment starting with their game against North Melbourne at Carrara.

But you never know.

We're likely to play Geelong on Saturday Afternoon, hopefully at the MCG. If so its the first time the teams would have met at the MCG. Lose and we host a semi final at home, probably on the Friday Night and probably against Collingwood. But I'm hoping its against Sydney.

If the Saints get a 100 point win, we're playing Collingwood at home next Saturday Night.

well, when a blow out starts, it can get very big. if the Bombers lose, i'm counting on them to at least hold their own and lose honorably. they do have players playing their last games ever... i wouldn't be surprised if they really pushed the saints to their limits.
Well can you spare us some players KC?
sure, you can have McGregor, and he can stay there too. apparently can play back and forward...throw in Jericho as well; might kick some goals.

Is it beyond the realms of possibility that an "agreement" on the result between the two clubs.

Noticed on Centrebet the odds of 39.5 plus are 1.97 with under being 2.10. Not often that occurs, unless the team is Geelong.

Hmm... I did have conspiracy theories at first, but a team to throw a game by 96 points, in a send off ro some of their heroes? Unlikely. If it was ever found out to have occurred, there would be some resounding consequences as well I'd say.
