Prospective No.1 draft pick Jack Watts will take part in the draft camp

THE AFL has released the names of the 75 young hopefuls who will attend this year's NAB AFL Draft Camp, which gets under way at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra next week.

The camp is a key event in the lead-up to November's NAB AFL Draft, with the attendees given the opportunity to impress recruiters from the 16 AFL clubs as they are put through a series of interviews and tests.

Prospective top-three choices Nicholas Naitanui, Jack Watts and Daniel Rich will take part, as will tall forward Ayce Cordy who is likely to go to the Western Bulldogs as a father-son pick.

Victoria leads the state by state breakdown with 37 players invited followed by South Australia with 14, Western Australia with 13, Tasmania with five, the Northern Territory with three, New South Wales with two and one from Queensland.

The three-day camp kicks off on next Wednesday with fitness assessments and psychomotor tests which measure reaction time, decision-making and peripheral awareness.

Sprints, vertical leap and agility are tested on Thursday, with the dreaded beep test to be held at 5pm. The three-km time trial awaits on Friday morning, with a skills session to finish the camp later that afternoon.

The draft meeting will be held on Saturday November 29, and the camp is a pivotal part of the assessment process along with the NAB AFL U18 Championships and the TAC Cup.

ACT misses out again.

And this is the state that NSW-ACT AFL deem too 'developed' for young players to be offered scholarships like the rest of NSW.

This will be 12 years of draft drought.

What has AFL got against Canberra?

Who from the ACT should have got an invite Cylon?
IMHO I don't believe anyone that is eligible is good enough.

I believe Cylon's point is exactly that, no one from ACT should have been invited this year, once again. Therefore kids from ACT should be able to get scholarships to AFL clubs like kids from the rest of NSW to further develop the talent pool and interest.

Notice Brown didn't get invited. Anyone know why, how etc: Is he the next Mourish, overrated on bigfooty?
Or did clubs not want to invite him because he is a smokey? I think playing games in the TAC cup leaves you pretty exposed to all clubs so can't see clubs not inviting him to hide him from any clubs?

Thoughts?

Thanks bf_justanotherfan. It was my point.

Statistically you would expect a region as big as the ACT to have had someone invited to the draft in the last 12 years..another James Hird or Craig Bolton. And I'm afraid one single rookie draftee in 12 yrs doesn't cut it either. So you can only conclude that the region is being ignored/overlooked by recruiters or that players are not being sufficiently developed and therefore not good enough.

In actual fact it is getting harder for our players as now they must compete with the NSW scholarship players to get a place on the RAMs state team. The scholarship players are receiving:
- 10-20,000 per year for up to three yrs which helps them travel etc
- they receive coaching/development from the AFL teams that select them
- and most importantly the Sydney scholarship holders receive around 5-6 months of twice per week coaching with the state coaches - Rams...the kids from the ACT don't receive this so when selection etc comes around you could be forgiven for being paranoid about suspecting that some bias towards scholarship holders exists.

The scholarship kids also receive the coverage on the AFLACT websites which could also have the effect of magnifying their profile. Every day there seems to be another Sydney kid receiving a scholarship.

For a kid wanting to make it in the ACT there are no role models. There is no belief that you can make it to the draft. And yet AFL persists in saying that the ACT is a 'developed' footy state in no need of the scholarship system that most of NSW receives?

Its only draft camp guys, not any sort of final list. There is still all the kids for state screening in the mix as well ;):)
The only difference is these kids where nominated by more clubs.

The AFL has not got anything against Canberra as far as draft camp goes. To get to draft camp you have to be nominated as a player of interest by several clubs. If the clubs are not interested then you don't get to go. If only a few are interested then you may get a state screening.

ian richardson gets an invite but no hayden ballantyne?

I take it this means that Michael Still isn't nominating.

The only logical conclusion as far as I'm concerned.

Just one? Wasn't James Meiklejohn from the ACT? That makes two (including Bruce, currently on the Swans' rookie list);)

Doesn't alter the gist of your point, though!

25 Dayne Beams QLD Southport
There was only 1 that should have been invited, Its the BEST from around the Country not just anybody that wants a go!
I wasn't having a crack at clubs for not nominating QLD players. I am just surprised (and disappointed I guess) at the sudden drop in talent from QLD when only a couple of years ago they had more than a dozen players drafted in the 'super-draft'.

None of these lists have anything to do with who has nominated and who hasn't. Matt DeBoer was at Draft Camp last year and didn't nominate in the end.

Still is going to State Screening, by the way. I overheard a couple of recruiters talking about his late call up at Visy Park last week.

I'm aware of that, but as I understand, these lists represent club nominations of players, and I doubt a club would be nominating a player when they already had a prior indication that that player wasn't nominating. That's where the assumption came from.

Still is going to State Screening, by the way. I overheard a couple of recruiters talking about his late call up at Visy Park last week.

Good to know. Quite surprised he isn't going to Draft Camp and it took a late call to get him into the State Screenings.

He would've gone close to leading the Knights' goalkicking as a very underage kid, he's really got something about him.

Mind you, I suppose Draft Camp's only a mild indicator if past drafts are anything to go by.

He had a patch in the middle of the season when he couldn't find the ball if it had a bell on it and he had a 10 minute head start. It was probably about the time when clubs were compiling their lists of 50.
