They say this morning Port will take Hartlett even if Rich is available.

Thoughts Port folks? I know you guys would like Hartlett at Alberton, but over Rich? Over Vickery?

Surely the Dons would take Rich?

Leaving The Blues with choice of Yarran, Ziebel, Hurley and Vickery.

makes sense to me. I reckon the hometown factor is a big thing these days...especially with new teams coming in and homesickness so prevalent amongst 17 year olds.

I put Hartlett to Port in my draft for the 2g. Don't think they'll take another ruckman after going for a ruck with their first pick last year.

Can you really afford to take 2 ruckmen as your first round pick 2 years straight??

I agree. People are saying defence is the issue and get Hurley. But atleast you got a few players coming through in defence.

Jamison and Bower are good...Thornton is honest and Waite is good enough for CHB. Plus O'Hailpin is an option...and i forget the name of the kid you drafted who can also play back.

Forward line is the biggest worry. YOu do have Eddie Betts...but any carlton supporter will tell you that they need to improve on Betts.

Having Fevola, Fisher, Betts, Yarran and Kruezer up forward looks quite talented. Really they need a CHF, but it seems they are keen on Kruezer for this role.

This thing is like Big Foot. It's only a big issue on Big Footy and i'm sure clubs would make decision on a player by player basis after interviewing the kid, not sweeping decisions that because he's from interstate he's automatically going to want to go home after a few years.

Prevalent? Far from it. It's an occassional thing that happens, but it's not like it's an issue that is effecting 50% of players, players are just as likely to change clubs without returning to their home city.

Disagree. At some point free agency is going to be inevitable and many of those interstate kids will be heading home.

go home factor is no more of a factor now than it was 4-6-8 years ago. I have no qualms picking up Hartlett, I know Port have been uber keen on him for a long long time.

Rich v Hartlett, im not fussed really. I think if Rich falls we'll take him, but I could be wrong.

If this is the case, do you think vickery to richmond would be likely?

Vickery to Richmond is looking more & more likely by the day!
To be honest I wouldn't be ruling out Vickery to Brisbane.

I know we desperately need to inject some midfield class, Voss has stated this is an area we will target, and there will be a near riot amongst supporters if we overlook a mid again. But Brisbane have always looked to go best available early and have used their first round picks recently to bolster their key positions - Brennan (02), Spaanderman (03), Wood (04), Clark (05), Leuenberger (06), and Henderson (07). Obviously Brennan has moved into the midfield and Spaanderman and Wood are no longer there. But Leuenberger, Clark, and Henderson are 3 players you can build a side around. Merrett is also young and can hold down FB for the next 10 years so that is just about next decade's spine already decided. We just need to find another young ruck (as we only have 2 genuine rucks left on our senior list) before we start filling the holes.

I hope we do go for a class ball user early this year, but I won't be surprised if Vickery (if available) lands at Brisbane.

There will be restrictions imposed on a free agency (i.e. years of service).

Otherwise expect to see retention allowances or zone selections re-introduced.

If a free agency is what you want, no supporter from a footballing state can whinge about such allowances.

Kewl, How do you think Jack Zab will fit into the Tiger midfield.

So you don't want your club to draft kids from interstate because of the "inevitability" of free agency?

What you have said may become the case if/when free agency is introduced (which could still be a while yet), but in the current environment you couldn't call it more then an occasional occurrence. And i think you'll find free agency won't promote kids going home when they want to, it'll see more of them chase the money, regardless of where it is.

So they're making the assumption that Port have gone off Vickery and that if Rich is gone, as that line suggests they think he will be, Port will take Hartlett.

Nothing in it, but a pretty reasonable suggestion

What is the 411 on Vickery? How does he compare to Hurley? If his best position is considered forward, surely he's the best fit for Carlton, particularly given many people think we'll draft Hurley to play forward. A big bodied CHF is exactly what we need and, lets face it, we need to prepare for life after Fev in about 4 years.

Thoughts?

Yes this an interesting one.If port pick hartlett then if carlton go for hurley or yarran, the tigers will definately pick up Vickery.
Then the pies will defiantely have agun midfielder fall to us at pick 11.

one of swift, zeibell, blease, sidebottom wil come the pies way, unless hurley doen't get picked up by the blues collingwood or adelaide will pick him up at our first pick and pick midfielders at 28.45.46....POSSIBLY AN ASH SMITH ,ZAHARAKIS, HANEBURY,ROBINSON,but we will miss swift if we don't pick him at 11.

Interesting question. I think port will take whoever they believe will be the best available, irrespective of it's a tall or a small.

Certainly it's looking more and more likely we'll pick up a midfielder, but i would be equally happy if we went for vickery or hurley. I'd be surprised if we passed on rich, booming left footers are favoured by choco. If rich wasn't available, then i'd be just as happy with hartlett.
