YOUNG Richmond midfielder Trent Cotchin is facing a race against time to be fit for the start of the 2009 premiership season.
Cotchin, 18, is yet to resume full training because of achilles tendon and calf problems and has already been ruled out of early NAB Cup participation, which begins for the Tigers on February 15 against Fremantle in Perth.
Richmond football manager Ross Monaghan, who crossed from Melbourne in the off-season, said the Tigers could not be specific when Cotchin's soreness would subside and allow him to train without being restricted.
"It's hard to say when he'll be right, his body hasn't fully developed and we've been juggling his training program," Monaghan said. "We don't think there's any long-term detrimental effect, and hopefully he'll be right for the first round of the season proper in March. We've backed off his training and adjusting his program to best suit his body."
Monaghan said Cotchin's latest injury concerns were on the opposite leg to last year, when an achilles problem prevented the overall No2 national draft selection from making his debut until round eight.
So impressive were his first 15 games last season, averaging almost 17 disposals, the teenager finished third to Rhys Palmer and Cyril Rioli in the Ron Evans Medal, the AFL's rising star award.
The Tigers won 11 games in 2008, but finished strongly by winning nine of 15 when Cotchin played.
"He goes a few steps forward and then one back," Monaghan said of Cotchin's 2009 preparation. "It's irritating for him, especially with the expectation based on last year is that he'd be a superstar.
"It's hard to say when he'll be able to hit the track and train flat out."
Two "new" faces ready to resurrect their careers are Mark Coughlan and Andrew Raines, who are both likely to play against the Dockers next month.
Coughlan, who has been plagued by multiple knee reconstructions and hamstring problems, has not appeared for the Tigers since the middle of 2006.
After 46 straight games, Raines' season was halted early last year, first by a dislocated kneecap in round two followed by several other soft-tissue problems.
Kayne Pettifer is hoping to push for senior selection in the second half of the year after a knee reconstruction last season. Graham Polak, who was in critical condition last year after being hit by a tram, is in full training but the Tigers are yet to establish a time for his return.
Ben Cousins has been ruled out for the first official pre-season match, but could face his former club West Coast in the second round of the NAB Cup if results fall that way.

Re: Tigers to take safe path with Cotchin

Polak will be back too imo. I can see him playing a few games for Coburg in the first half of the season. Would be great to have a full list to choose from for Round 1. We have a few players who won't be 100% at the start of the season though

Fantastic news if he can do the full body contact work now. It really does give hope that he may be able to return to the seniors one day.

Much as I want this to be true, remember, this is 'The Australian'. Not exactly the most credible source of AFL news.

Re: Tigers to take safe path with Cotchin

I'd be very suprised to see Polak not retire within the next year or two. He realisticlly knows that after what he's gonna through football is just really out of the question. Then again he might improve even more, brain related injuries can take up to 2 years +

Re: Tigers to take safe path with Cotchin

Polak playing before mid-year.... ABSOLUTELY DREAMING!

One head knock and trouble. Neither he NOR the club would ever even contemplate letting him play. The risks would be massive and can you imagine if something happened to him and how it would look on the club.

Sorry, but as much as we want a Jason McCartney good news, comeback story, l personally dont see it happening. Training well and keeping fit to help the recovery is one thing... playing full contact competitive football is miles away.

Good luck to Polly, would love nothing more.

Re: Tigers to take safe path with Cotchin

Plenty of time with Cotchin, still a kid with a handfull of games under his belt, 10 years plus ahead of him to make an impact. Look after him.

Silly to worry about a head knock, if Polak' s medico's fear any bump he may as well hang up the boots now. A hit will never be something that can be predicted.

I understand he is fit, moving well and bright as a button, from what i read concerns were more about peripheral vision late last year. If true I wonder if that's on the improve like his general health. Any word?

some good news on polak, but dont think he will come back this year. lets hope cotchin is alright by round 1.

Cotchin may miss NAB Cup opener

RICHMOND midfielder Trent Cotchin's left achilles injury is likely to keep him out of the first round of the NAB Cup, but he could be available after that as he prepares to play his first full season in the AFL.

A broken right foot and achilles caused the 18-year-old to miss all of his first pre-season 12 months ago, but he debuted later in the year and finished third in the 2008 NAB AFL Rising Star on the back of just 15 games.

Richmond's football manager Ross Monaghan said on Tuesday afternoon: "Trent is dealing with an achilles tendon issue.

"He is expected to make a full recovery but is not expected be available for round one of the NAB Cup."

Matt Hornsby, Richmond's elite performance manager, said Cotchin was progressing nicely, and that the injury was not something that would dog him for the rest of his career.

"He's actually going quite well; he's had some issues with his achilles which he had when he was drafted to us, and obviously he had the broken bone as well," Hornsby told richmondfc.com.au.

"It's just part of his young body still developing, and he'll grow out of it.

"He's an 18-year-old, and we have such high expectations on young players these days – he's only six weeks older than (eighth pick in the 2008 draft) Tyrone Vickery."

I just can't help but think that Cotchin's injuy is worse that we are being led to believe - to me the pr spin coming from the Tigers has the smell of the Buckley hamstring scenario of a couple of years ago.

Yeah Nathan will be back in a couple of weeks.....just a few more weeks now.....its just a hamstring complaints give it a couple more of weeks.......sure he's almost ready to go just 2 more weeks......

I hope I'm wrong but I don't like what I'm smelling

That's what Mark Doran was saying on SEN yesterday.

I don't think your impressions are right, he'll miss Round 1 of the NAB Cup, no biggie.
