A great reward for the young bloke.
Hopefully he can get a senior game or two before the year is out.

Cats upgrade Laidler

Jeremy Laidler has been upgraded

Geelong rookie Jeremy Laidler has been upgraded to the senior list. With Josh Hunt on the long term injury list with a ruptured ACL, the Cats have taken the opportunity to upgrade the in form Laidler.
“Jeremy has been playing good consistent football in the VFL and deserves this elevation,” Geelong general manager of football operations Neil Balme said.
“We’re confident that Jeremy will continue to improve and play well and push his claims for senior selection.”
Laidler was selected by Geelong in the rookie draft in 2007 after helping the Calder Cannons win the TAC Cup. He has played 24 VFL games over the past two seasons with the Cats. Laidler impressed when given an opportunity in the NAB Cup this year, when he played three games.

SUPER! Definitely want to give him every opportunity to become the Milburn style utility.

Good news as I think he is a good prospect but the timing is strange for mine. You'd think they would have promoted him earlier in the year when he was absolutely gunning it and Hunt, Harley, DJ and Dasher were all injured. Maybe having to switch Mackie into a defensive role on Johnson last week has convinced them they need to have another option to play tight on the oppositions medium forwards.

Bravo!! Would have liked to have seen this happen earlier in the year but very happy this kid has been given a chance. I suspect he'll get a couple of games later this year.

Great to see. He looked the most impressive of the young guys in the NAB Cup. Didnt look out of place at the top level, showed some composure, and has a nice penetrating kick.He could slot in with no worries IMO.

It's interesting because Balmey said earlier this year that they wouldn't elevate anyone unless they thought they would get a game in the ones

Probably said prior to Geelong's run with injuries, some of which have been long termers. I always thought he'd be a good option to take Hunt's spot on the list after Hunt did his knee.

It was after Hunt went down. Maybe they are seeing holes that need fixing for the finals.

Probably right. Don't know how he would have done against Johnson or Akermanis last week as they were on (probably would've lower his colours but you have to start somewhere) but he looks a better match-up, especially for a guy like Johnson, than a Taylor.

Could be a player to match up on those kinds of guys moving forward.

Really happy he is going to be given a go. Was a standout in the TAC the year he was drafted and was stoked when we rookied him. Has a lot of untapped potential. Hopefully he debuts sooner rather than later.

Mumford would be. I imagine they'd keep Ranga on the rookie list for another year, purely because they can. Spots on the list are going to be tight at the end of the year - can't see us drafting more than three players at the moment.

Spots are definitely tight. I was thinking possibly-

Harley for Laidler
D.Simpson for Mumford
Tenace for Ranga

Then to get the 3 additional national draft spots that Egan, Donohue and Scott Simpson could be either retired/delisted. Based on Milburn playing another year of course.

I'd say we will rookie Ranga for another year.

My 5 that will not be at the club:

Milburn (Retired)
Tenace
Egan
Donohue
Dave Johnson ( I love him, but I don't know of anyone else?)

Donohue may hold his spot depends on the trade situation.

Moles to go off the rookie list.

I think Milburn and Harley might both retire, especially if we win the flag.

Tenace and Egan likely to go in any case.

I also agree that Mumford and now probably Laidler are likely to come up, so we need at least one more to go, which is hard.

I know D Simpson is only a kid, but I wonder whether he might be a possibility now that the big Mummy has probably come on quicker than expected. D Johnson also a chance - he'll be 28 so little upside left there and quite a few probably gone past him. I haven't seen as much of Donohue as others, but I would have thought he might be given a longer opportunity given he was bottom-aged when he arrived.

How is Dan McKenna travelling?

Don't forget the possibility of trading either - most of us wouldn't have included Prismall in these sorts of discussions this time last year.

I was impressed with what I saw in the pre-season.

What's he like overhead?

From what I have seen of him he has a very good pair of hands.

Milburn Ret. Would have gone last year if we had won.
Tenace Delisted. Would have played a lot more footy elsewhere. Now , GFL bound
West Traded. Mumford is his hangman.
Egan Delisted. Football can be cruel.
DJohnson Delisted. To much talent coming from under him.

Harley might also consider going but I think he may hang in for one more year , maybe if Egan is right he may go. I have no doubt he will do what ever is the best for Geelong.

The ones who are definitely gone, IMO:

Milburn. Ret. Still a great player but you'd rather go out on a high.
Harley. Ret. I think he's all but confirmed this is his last season?
Tenace. Delisted. Obvious reasons.
Egan. Delisted. Tragedy, but there you go.
D. Johnson. Delisted. Laidler, Djerrkura and Donohue could all potentially play his role on top of Hunt.

That would fill our minimum requirements, I would think - elevate Laidler and Mumford, keep Ranga on the rookie list for another year, and draft three players. West could potentially be trade bait.

I'm surprised by people thinking Donohue should go. Hasn't stood out in the twos but it is only his second year, he seems handy enough.

That's why he is touted I think. We have so much talent in his position and he is a long way behind everyone else there.

He has a position? I was under the impression they'd played him at both ends as a general 'small'. I know he's not within cooee of a game now, but he was never going to be in his first few years given the strength of the side and the fact we took two blokes of a similar nature (Djerrkura and Hogan) the year before.

Like a lot of our drafting/list management over the last few years, I think he's been taken with an eye very much on the future.

I don't know what the clubs plans are in regard to Adam Donohue but it's worth remembering that he was very bottom-aged when drafted.

He only turned 19 earlier this year, and just to compare, he's only about a month older than Tom Gillies, so he does have time on his side.
