What's the strangest thing that's happened to you?

So many strange things have happened to me over the years that nothing seems strange anymore.

I've been involved in homicide investigations, found bodies, been bailed up by drunk guys with automatic weapons, met crazy people, hassled for being a terrorist (twice).....

What's the strangest things that have happened to you?

The strangest thing that ever happened to me was when I drove past Epping railway station in Sydney and I had this premonition that the car coming towards me was going to lose its hubcap.

And as it rounded the bend, thats what happened

Why?

Sure there are a few murderers, muggers, vandals and car thieves but Glebe is full of fine citizens such as myself and Porthos.

However, there are some dubious characters, such as the nude man I caught trying to steal my washing in the communal laundry at 3.00 am one morning.

I was really ****ed off, but trying to explain what happened to the local law at that time of the morning when bent is not easy....

I actually lived in a 2 storey terrace house in Glebe for a couple of months in the 70's, was a great place then, full of hippies.

Mantis, you're Perth based now from memory?

My mum lives in Perth, and is extremely paranoid. She thinks going to Northbridge at night is a death sentence.

A few years ago I visited her there at Xmas/New Year, at the same time as a mate of mine who also has family there.

My mate is extremely well travelled, and knows how to handle herself travelling around places like North Africa, which is a bit tricky for an attractive white woman.

For New Year's Eve, we decided to go to Northbridge and my weird mother thought she'd never see us again. Both of us had travelled to strange places or had odd experiences and so we humoured the old lady. Perth couldn't be too bad after I've been hassled by drunk Turkish border guards with machine guns or accused of trying to bomb a market in Seoul.

We had a great time. Everyone was so friendly, even the bouncers, at least before midnight.

But at about 1.30 am the mood changed to very nasty. Lots of young guys who clearly expected a r**t and didn't get one were getting aggro and it was time to go. As we heading out, we were laughing about my mother's concerns when we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of a small riot, with a large gang of aborigines chucking anything they could get their hands on at the cops, and the cops in full riot gear charging them.

Scary.

Was that 2000/2001 or around then? I would have been in the area and I remember something that that happening. Then again, it probably happens all the time.

It's been quite now for a while. Before there was some warring between rival gangs who were predomintaly Vietnamese in the M'Bros, Spiderboys, and Dragonboys. There were running street battles, brawls INSIDE the club, brawls just outside the club, bashings of rivals, and rumbling with bouncers who either didn't allow them in due to weapons found on them or were kicked out for fighting. All of this resulted in your usual bruises, knife wounds, and deaths. A nice lot to know really.

I lived there for six months in 1993. Just a short stroll up Wigram Road from the Harold. Loved that pub.

Then I moved out to the "suburbs" - Enmore!! The inner west of Sydney is the place to be.

My wierdo thing is everytime I drive at night I see at least one street light go out. It might only be a 5 min trip but it still happens. No one believes me until they ride with me and I show them. It freaks me out. The best I've done is 4 in a 15 min trip.

99% of the time, if you stay with the crowds, you're right, but everynow and then, something interesting happens in northbridge.

- I went to the chinese ny festival with some malaysian friends of mine last year, and on our way there, we see this (vietnamese) guy come pounding through their with about six vietnamese gangers chasing him. With machetes. Anyway, they caught him, started hacking him with machetes, and the sprinted off. From memory, I think the victim died before he got too hospital?

A lot more gory, though, was when i was in year 11, whilst waiting for a train after school at Kenwick Station, we saw Aborigine A push Aborigine B in front of the oncoming train. His head got squished between the train and the platform, and splashes of blood and brain landed on a fair few people standing around, including some year 8 kiddies. Not a nice thing to see at all.

I didn't go to that festival in question, but i heard about the killing. Yes the guy did die before he got to a hospital and even before paramedics arrived. That Kenwick Station one is pretty full on, but i don't remember hearing about it. I know there have been train accidents, but i can't remember one where one aboriginal pushed another into a train.

Oh and myee8 = Malaysian too!

Oh god, that's terrible. Urgh. What happened to Aborigine A?

Lately I've been having premonitions in my dreams. The other night I had one wear I dreamt I bought a magazine because you got a free surprise that had to do with Kath & Kim. The next day mum had bought herself a magazine and me the Kath & Kim DVD's. Not much really but the next one is. A few weeks ago I dreamt that my dad had been in a car accident and the front of his car was all smashed in. The next arvo when I came home from school I saw a different car in the driveway. Turns out earlier that day dad had hit a car which smashed his car in so he had to borrow another one from work!
