It was always gonna be tough after losing Waite and Jamo, but the game showed us where we still need to work.

Our backline is still ordinary. Brown and Bradshaw were always gonna keep the sway of the game. We're especially weak off half-back and rebounding. Guys like Bower, Walker, Russell, Armfield etc have to work of their strength and SKILL in these areas.

Hopefully Ratten has some ideas with how we can win games without our midfield and Fevola doing all the work.

I seriously have never understood the "talking up" of Bower. Ok, he is young and playing in a fairly weak backline, but everytime the ball comes near him I cringe. He is either sitting off his man a metre or two, or kicking to a man under pressure.
I dont mind Armfield though. He is consistent.
Thornton needs help down there. A great second tall backman, but not the first.

Pretty hard to defend when its turned over in the midfield and comes in so fast. Bower or Thornton can't match Bradshaw on the lead. Disappointing loss but pointing the finger at the wrong people here...

Any back line would look ordinary when you take out the two main guys, made the finals with a prolapsed disk, fix the spine and we will be Ok.

Our backline was average. Not brilliant, but average.

It was our midfield that lost us the game. Terry Wallace was right, and tonight proved it. Complete front runners.

I hope they lose some sleep over it. Pathetic performence. One of the worst in the Club's history.

You guys need to aggressively target a KP backman during the trade period.

Trade Yarran to WCE for pick 7 and use your pick 7/10 to get a key back.

Perhaps you could trade Pick 7/10 for Tarrant + 2nd rounder (19).

Tarrant is perhaps a tad old but not sure what other options are out there, surely Lake won't be going anywhere.

Couldn't agree more. I dont get why we are constantly talking up this average player. He runs like an absolute freak, can't kick for crap and gives away free kicks every second the ball is down there. Yeah backline is looking good seriously. We are improving greatly, thats why we will never get anywhere till we get a proper backline. Yes we are missing Waite and Jammison thats huge I get that.

Can't believe this crap why couldn't we have had the pick before us and got Hurley so mad right now its beyond belief. Only positive Bulldogs will smash Brisbane to bits next week

Missing Waite, Jamison and Austin.

Bower was playing with a bung knee. Couldn't get out off a jog in the last quarter. Had no other tall to turn to.

We were always going to struggle without our FB and CHB. A credit that we did so well missing them for most of the season. Our defence was a strength to the midway point of the season.

unfortunately i agree 100%

We were able to get away with not having Jamison and Waite against the weaker teams but couldn't cover it in a final. The top sides- St.Kilda and pies for example are having a good run with injury and that's why they're winning consistently. Hopefully we'll also have Warnock up and running next year which will give us a lot more options.

Bower is terrible at playing on leading players, not just tonight but all year. Hopefully next year we can get him some better matchups.

O'Hailpin SHOULD of played. With all the players unavailable in the bacjkline, surely he would have given us a nother strong tall body to play on Brown/ Bradshaw.

We lost this game at the selection table.

Whole lot of crap posted in this thread.

Backline, specifically the key backs played a solid game tonight. Brown and Bradshaw got on top in the end, but Thornton and Bower played bravely. Any team allowed the time and space to enter the forward 50 that we allowed Brisbane is going to do some damage...poiint fingers at the midfield if they must be pointed.A lot of marks taken in the forward 50 were tough to defend

Undermanned as they were I'm proud of the defensive effort tonight.

How can anyone criticise JR's disposal?

JR's kick after he took them on tosplit two Lions on the fifty and hit the target on his wrong foot was brilliant.

Also nailed a great running goal from 50.

Our mids just gave their players too much space and didn't block their forwards' leads. No backline can stop lace out kicks with a paddock in front of their forwards to lead to.

Our mids need to learn to push back.

They cheated a bit and ran forward hoping we dug it out.

Luckily it came off.

I totally agree with you, Bower panics when he's under pressure, and he has the most awkward running style, he flips his arm way too much, not to mention about his handballing skills. Austin will take over his spot within 1 year or 2.

correct. Bower showed himself to be an ordinary defender at AFL level tonight.

Bower's aversion to a physical contest is simply not good enough. Brown & Bradshaw are difficult enough when you are all over them like a glove but playing them as loose as Bower was is just handing Brisbane the game.

you could get Troy Chaplin out of Port without to many dramas, you really need a Carlile (like a lot of clubs), but they won't give him up. He could fill a hole that is filled by the Thornton's & Bower's of the world releasing them elsewhere on the ground.

and to be honest mate, just who are you pointing the finger at this time?

Bower is a half back flanker having to play a key position in defence when his natural game is receiving the ball from one of the key defenders and rebounding with it up the ground.

T-bird is supposed to be our third tall defender, but again he has been swapped back into a key role yet again and while he does an admirable job at it... he should be one of the link defenders.

As you said, the mid's were to blame today and this is something that Ratts and the development staff will probably analyize over the break and start working on it during the preseason.

All in all, it is looking like things are going to be interesting!
