FiveAA Interview with Bernie Vince

This was actually last week, I recorded it, then proceeded to totally forget that I had recorded it. I just checked the FiveAA podcasts and they don't seem to have it up so I figured I'd upload it.

He doesn't say anything too interesting but, hey, it's the offseason I'll listen to anything from the Crows!

vince.mp3 - 13.58MB

A few snippets:

The new away strip will be worn with blue socks. Presumably navy blue. I just can't see this looking good in my mind but I'll reserve judgement on it.

Bernie expects that other clubs might "know who he is" and tag him more this year, but will do work in preseason to get used to it.

He left the club's trip to Europe early so he could bat for Stansbury

Rowe asked if the Crows needed to mix it up a bit, hit the men harder and break their own structures from time to time to confuse the opposition, but Vince disagreed strongly and said that their best patches late last year came from them understanding each other's games and he anticipates the structures helping next year.

Reckon's he got lost in the new facility a number of times Indicated that they might do some ballwork upstairs rather than go out to "the park" (Max Basheer?).

VB didn't run the recent 3km run because he was resting his back.

It's about 14 minutes, enjoy!

Yeah, it is a bit of a worry. I guess it wasn't going to get any better during the season while he was playing though. Has he had surgery in the off-season?

Kristof - yeah, about once a week It's pretty slack, they should have every show up for podcast these days.

yes VB's back problem is becoming a real ongoing issue...wasn't he gonna to be our 1st tagger?...perhaps in hindsight the decision to delist Rob Shirley wasn't the wisest made by the club...now the tagging role will be left soley to Dogga, and IMO thats a complete waste, considering Dogga's doing well in his HB role.

Don't count out Rory Sloane getting a chance at it next year.

Really depends on his ability to gain a lot of endurance this offseason as well as add bulk to cut down on injury/fatige effects through the year.

I think Punchy and Jenny are on the right track. Apart from the fact that tagging is now becoming less important as zones become more common (i.e. it is tricky to set up a zone but have one player not zoning and sticking by their opponent - this weakens the zone and allows other players to pick holes), tagging is a great role for a young midfielder like Sloane take on so that he can learn the caper. I think it a waste to play VB as a tagger. Dogga is an interesting player in that I would prefer him not to be a tagger (so that a younger player can do it) but he is probably not skilled enough to play as a damaging midfeilder. VB is also not particularly highly skilled but at least he can break opponents with his running power. I see Dogga actually becoming a permanent defender. He can play the Otten role as Otten moves into the midfield.

No, VB's hasn't really had any major tagging roles for a few years now, he may have played a few soft tags or given the likes of Shirley or Doughty a rest, but the club certainly thinks VB offers a lot more than just tagging. I think we'll see Doughty receive most of the tagging duties, along with perhaps Sloane, but as Charliie82 mentioned, I don't think we'll apply too many hard tags next year anyway, as we seek to maximise the effectiveness of our zones.

Did you hear the Scott Welsh interview after?

Cleared up the"fun" at training stuff and also reiterated that he did want to stay but needed two years because he had started a family.

Back with Westies this year I think.

What is the extent of his back injury? Is it a disc, nerve or muscle issue?
