Watermelon helmets

In the spirit of Australia Day, my mates and I will be making watermelon helmets to wear to the cricket that day. So, has anyone ever made one of these before? If so any tips on how to go about it? Any good designs anybody has seen or design suggestions? I've had a look around on the interwebs but there doesn't really seem to be much about them and Australia seems to be the only place that really gets into them. I will post pics of the final product as well.

Re: Watermelon helmets

Just get a watermelon, cut it in half & put it on your head, then when you get thirsty or hungry, just take it off & eat a little bit, then put it back on your head.

Re: Watermelon helmets

helmets seem impractical in the hot weather.

i imagine having rotting fruit and veg on your bonce in 40 degree heat may not be too much fun.

I think I might go for the more practical Sombrero/Straw hat look for the Aus Day Cricket! I don't get the watermelon helmet craze, imo they look awesome...but do they keep you cool? Smell nice?

Anyways, catch ya on the Hill

If you cut a banana in half you could make it a viking helmet.

Re: Watermelon helmets

Alternatively, you could use the watermelon to sneak in some grog.

Preparation:
- Make a small hole in the watermelon, carefully keeping the offbit.
- Via the hole: mash out and drain the watemelon's juices.
- Fill Watermelon with preferred spirit (Vodka or Gin goes better with fruity flavours).
- Replace offbit and seal (if you can).

At the game:
- take the watermelon in trying your best to conceal the hole.
- take drinking straws and insert via the hole to drink and share with your mates.
- once watermelon is emtpy crak in half and wear on the head.
