Who in your opinion has been the best ruckman drafted within the first three picks. This may seem like a stupid poll but it's incredible to think there have been so many drafted with the number one pick, or even touted to be picked as number 1, particularly in the 1990's and just in the last three years.

Hard question to answer; I rate Primus very highly, Gardiner has been very good over the course of his career despite obvious attitude concerns, and Kreuzer (if you're factoring in potential) is playing remarkably well for someone only drafted in 2007.

I'm going to go with Ottens. The best ruckman in the best side going around. Again, factoring in durability concerns might be the issue with him.

They changed the rules to reduce Primus's impact. Bloody excellent player.

Gardiner and Ottens are strong candidates, with I think Gardiner being a touch ahead partly due to just how dominant he was before the knee problems.

I simply haven't seen enough of Kruezer to rate him.

Justin Longmuir had the potential, was cruelled with injuries. It still hurts me to see him walk the sidelines of Subi as a coach. He could still be playing at only 29 years, pity he had the worst knees of all time.

Ahh J'Lo, I stand by my comment that Freo were robbed a dynasty of premierships through J'Lo's career ending injury. He could have been perfect in '06 when the Swans were triple teaming Pav.

Interesting that of the best rucks in recent years, most were not taken with top 3 picks. Cox and Sandilands with rookie picks and Jolly with relatively high pick, but not top 3.

Hmm intresting that Kruezer is winning he has a long way to go to match Primus.

Primus was a star was the best ruckman in the league for 3-4 years and would have been longer if he hadent had a Knee reco was very unlucky to miss out on the Premiership.

Jolly was a rookie. Which is not top 3, but not relatively high either.

TBH its a complete joke having kreuzer or naitanui in the thread. Anyone voting for them are purely fanboys.

Primus got my vote. He was dominant and he was so good they changed the rules to lessen his effect.

Jeff White was #1 and the rules were changed to reduce his (or Primus') impact. Between those two for me
The rules were changed because too many ruckmen were getting knee injuries, not because of the dominance of any particular ruckman. Under the old rules, the ruckmen were taking long run-ups and jumping straight into each other. This often resulted in a clash of knees, with several players (most notably Adam Goodes) being injured as a result. The 2nd circle limited the run-ups and we've barely seen any ruck-related knee injuries since its introduction. From an OH&S perspective this has been one of the most successful rule changes, without significantly impacting on the spectacle of the game.

That said, White was the big loser when they introduced the 2nd circle. He was shorter than the average ruckman and relied on his leap to compete with the taller blokes (which he did really well). By limiting his run-up they reduced his leap, significantly impacting his ability to contest the ball.

For the record, Kruezer & NicNat might be worthy of consideration in 10 years time, but they're certainly not worthy of it now. For my money, Primus is/was the best player on this list.

Kinda silly adding Jeff White after 90+ people have already voted. If it were the "Name of the Year" poll and 6,000 votes were expected, then fair enough.

That wasn't the "primus" rule. The Primus rule stopped a ruckman from crossing over to the other rucks side of the circle and effectively using their bulk to stop the other ruckman getting to the tap. Primus was brilliant at this, an gave Port an armchair ride. They then changed it so that you couldn't cross over to the other player's side unless the ball bounced that way.

Screwed up McKee as well.
