George Horlin Smith
Height: 186cm
Weight: 78kg
DOB: 22/12/92
Club: Sturt (SA)

Kevin Sheehan says: Outstanding at winning contested football and very creative player. Promising junior cricketer having represented Australia at U16 level.

In his own words
What type of player are you?
A utility that can play at either end of the ground, but predominantly through the midfield.

Which AFL player do you feel you resemble and why?
I really like Luke Hodge’s ability to play as a forward, through the midfield and as a defender. My goal would be to emulate his game, and his leadership qualities.

What are your strengths as a footballer?
Through experience of playing on the ball I have come to realise I must be quick with my hands, feet, and above all, mind.

What parts of your game would you like to improve?
I would like to improve my acceleration and strength but also continue to develop my non preferred side.

Which AFL team do you support and how did you come to barrack for them?
I support the Carlton Football Club and started barracking for them as I have always admired their legends of the past.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?
My junior school coach Mike Howard always taught me to run and get to the next contest. Above all however, my parents have been a great support for me at home.

Horlin Smith is the cricket smokey playing largely school footy. Will be really good.

I am staggered we didn't take Luke Parker though. I still can't get my head around it.

I reckon this kid will end up a better prospect. We are building another formidable midfield over these past 2 drafts.

Daffey's list on the AFL website has us rumored to take Horlin-Smith at 23 so I guess Wells will be very happy he fell to 37.

U keep saying u cant believe we didnt take this guy, cant believe we didnt pick that guy. Have u seen as many games as Wells and his crew then? And your track record is as good as his then?

George Horlin-Smith, a classy midfielder likened to Jack Trengove and Steele Sidebottom, has shaken up the draft order after his shock nomination.

Collingwood has been linked to Horlin-Smith and could use its first selection, pick No.44. But there are doubts the South Australian will still be available then.

Horlin-Smith, 17, has concentrated almost exclusively on cricket.

"He has never done a proper football pre-season in his life,," South Australian under-18 football coach Brenton Phillips said. "So you can imagine the development in him."

To me , it looks like Wells sees a lot of improvement there to come . Never done a football PreSeason!. , and being liken to Trengove is not a bad thing.

This kid could be a slightly risky pick but a one worth a punt. IMO

He played school footy for Pembroke, same school as Angus Monfries, Jace bode. I go to the pembroke gym as its open to the public after school hours and have seen him there a bit..

There was a big wrap on him in the local rag not long ago which is all ive heard about him.

To be honest i nearly choked on my dinner when i heard his name called.. But Wellsy is switched on and obviously sees something in him so it will be interesting to see how he settles in.

Cant see him playing senior footy in the foreseeable future though. He is skinny and hasnt played any senior footy so very much a project.

So this lad played a bit of school footy and two games for Sturt U18s.

Makes Isaac Smith look like a veteran

Re: 2010 National Draft selection no. 37-George Horlin Smith

Interestingly Port Adelaide had the 2 picks before we took him and they decided to pass. Surely they would have kept a close eye on the local boy. Doesn't really mean much but is just interesting.

Re: 2010 National Draft selection no. 37 - George Horlin Smith

Very much a project.

Elite junior cricketer who probably could have played state level but recently decided to pursue footy (ala Alex Carey last year). So pretty much hasn't done any pre seasons. According to what I have read around the traps, this is why he played only school footy (lack of fitness) but Brisbane liked him and convinced Sturt to give him a game so they could look at him more. Second or third Sturt game he gets injured and about 20 blokes get up and leave (so clearly someone whispered to somebody :D) and then allegedly the Pies told him they were gonna draft him and told him to take it easy for the rest of the year. Unfortunately for them, he went before their first pick.

This is what Wells said about George Horlin Smith:

It was all about versatile midfielders for the Cats with two Calder Cannons midfielders - Cameron Guthrie (No.23) and Jordan Schroder (No.54) - and a surprise packet in former under-16 Australian cricket captain George Horlin-Smith (No.37).

"(George) is a very skilful player who is obviously multi-talented with his sports," Wells said. "He was a bit more of a punt than all of the others in that he hasn't played anywhere near as much football-but we liked what we saw.

"He only played a couple of games with Sturt but played plenty of school football and we liked his skill, his creativity and his natural ball getting ability."

Re: 2010 National Draft selection no. 37-George Horlin Smith

Did anyone hear what Chris Scott said about him. Sort of plays a bit like Nathan Buckley. Wow we. I like the look of him from his highlights had no hesitation to use both sides of his body and didnt look hurried at all.

Welcome the hyphen.

Re: 2010 National Draft selection no. 37-George Horlin Smith

Doesn't seem to waste posession by just bombing it long, always looks to hit up a target short. This might be because he doesn't have a long kick on him which is probably half right.

Looks like he has good skills and very good touch, doesn't panic with the ball. Looks a smart player, I'm glad we picked him up.
