Something that I hear a lot is 'Oh we have the end of round 1 compo pick that will be top 20 in the uncompromised superdraft next year!' That's not quite the case, I'm afraid.

Assuming every club is thinking the same thing and they all decide to cash in their compo picks next year, we will be looking at a longer first round in 2012 than we'll get this year. It could look roughly like this:

1 - Port priority pick (sorry Port fans, I do hope you start winning)
2 - 18th
3 - 17th
4 - 16th
5 - 15th
6 - 14th
7 - 13th
8 - 12th
9 - 11th
10 - 10th
11 - 9th
12 - Scully compo #1 (Melb)
13 - Scully compo #2 (Melb)
14 - Ward compo (Dogs)
15 - Davis compo (Adel)
16 - Ablett compo #1 (GC)
17 - Ablett compo #2 (Geel)
18 - 8th
19 - 7th
20 - 6th
21 - 5th
22 - 4th
23 - 3rd
24 - 2nd
25 - 1st
26 - GWS priority pick
27 - Bock compo (Rich)
28 - Brennan compo (GC)
29 - Harbrow compo (Bris)
30 - Palmer compo (Freo)

- I assumed Port and GWS won't win 5 games. Even if it's not those two, you can be pretty certain that there will be some priority picks next year. It might even be more than 3.

- I didn't bother predicting where Adelaide, the Dogs, Geelong or Melb will finish next year. Obviously those picks won't all be in the middle (at least 2 will be).

- I obviously guessed the Scully/Ward/Davis/Palmer compo.

- This only includes confirmed GC/GWS signings. At a guess, there might be 4 more first round compo picks in play by the time the draft arrives. So the first round could end at about pick 34.

Overall good work and very interesting. Especially given teams need to announce their use of the compo picks at the start of the year - you could definitely get something like this happening. Essendon will be glad we haven't lost anyone yet, but the downside will be having only a single top 30 pick in what is supposed to be a super draft. Two other things:

You forgot that at least two players will be missing due to the U17yr old mini-draft picks.
And you can put Viney down for Melbourne and Daniher down for Essendon ;)
The port compo pick at the end of first round is from Nathan krakouer
Ah, so its a compo pick not a priority pick.

How do port get a Priority pick at pick 1, didnt the AFL abolished that and moved it to end of first round if you win less than 10 over 2 years?

I also though that Band 1 and band 2 comp was a pick after your first selection not mid round?

Pretty sure that was just for the GC/GWS drafts.

IIRC Band 1 is one middle of the round and one end of round so Geelong and Melbourne dont get 2 mid round picks.

it should look like this

1 - Port priority pick (sorry Port fans, I do hope you start winning)
2 - 18th
3 - 17th
4 - 16th
5 - 15th
6 - 14th
7 - 13th
8 - 12th
9 - 11th
10 - 10th
11 - 9th
12 - Scully compo #1 (Melb)
13 - Ward compo (Dogs)
14 - Davis compo (Adel)
15 - Ablett compo #1 (GC)-Based on Geelong finishing position
16 - 8th
17 - 7th
18 - 6th
19 - 5th
20 - 4th
21 - 3rd
22 - 2nd
23 - 1st
24 - Brennan compo (GC)- Based on Lions finishing position
25 - Scully compo #2 (Melb)
26 - Harbrow compo (Bris)- Based on Dogs finishing position
27 - Bock compo (Rich)- Based on Adelaide finishing position
28 - Palmer compo (Freo)
29 - Ablett compo #2 (Geel)
30 - GWS priority pick

Assuming:
Ladder finishes are in this order (only relevant teams included):

Geelong
Freo
Adelaide
Bulldogs
Melbourne
Richmond
Brisbane

Just for the fun of it I thought I'd throw a 2012 1st round attempt out there to give draft enthusiast some idea of how the draft may look next year just to start some discussion. I should re-order some of the compo picks based on my ladder but I'm more keen to get names out rather than generate a discussion about my ladder order and which club gets which player.

*This includes those likely + possible mini draft options - fair to say Jaeger O'Meara will already be gone then possibly a Brodie Grundy or Brad Crouch might be the other (Dayle Garlett, Ben Kennedy and Matthew Haynes are the others I believe will get consideration also).

1 - Port priority pick - Lachie Whitfield (VIC - MID)
2 - 18th - GWS - Jaeger O'Meara (WA - Mid)
3 - 17th - Port Adelaide - Brodie Grundy (SA - Ruck)
4 - 16th - Brisbane - Brad Crouch (VIC - Mid)
5 - 15th - Western Bull Dogs - Jake Stringer (VIC - Util)
6 - 14th - Adelaide - Ben Kennedy (SA - Mid)
7 - 13th - Richmond - Oliver Wines (VIC - Mid)
8 - 12th - Gold Coast - Matthew Haynes (VIC - Util)
9 - 11th - Essendon - Joe Daniher (VIC - KPF/Ruck - F/S)
10 - 10th - Sydney - Dayle Garlett (WA - Mid)
11 - 9th - North Melbourne - Josh Simpson (SA - Mid/Fwd)
12 - Scully compo #1 (Melb) - Jack Viney (VIC - Mid - F/S)
13 - Scully compo #2 (Melb) - Liam McBean (VIC - Ruck/KPF)
14 - Ward compo (Dogs) - Lachie Hunter (VIC - Mid - F/S)
15 - Davis compo (Adel) - Christopher Yarran (WA - Mid/Fwd)
16 - Ablett compo #1 (GC) - Anthony Bonaddio (VIC - Mid)
17 - Ablett compo #2 (Geel) - Jed Anderson (NT - Mid/Util)
18 - 8th - Melbourne - Jason Pongracic - (VIC - Mid)
19 - 7th - St Kilda - Nick Vlastuin (VIC - Mid)
20 - 6th - Geelong - Rory Atkins (VIC - Mid)
21 - 5th - Fremantle - Shannon Taylor (WA - Mid)
22 - 4th - West Coast - Corey Chalmers (WA - Mid)
23 - 3rd - Carlton - Emmanuel Irra (SA - Mid/Util)
24 - 2nd - Hawthorn - Jesse Lonergan (TAS - Mid)
25 - 1st - Collingwood - James Stewart (VIC - KPF - F/S)
26 - GWS priority pick - Kristan Yaksch (VIC - KPF)
27 - Bock compo (Rich) - Tim Membrey (VIC - Fwd)
28 - Brennan compo (GC) - Sam Mayes (SA - Fwd)
29 - Harbrow compo (Bris) - Jonathon O'Rouke (VIC - Mid)
30 - Palmer compo (Freo) - Riley Hutchinson (WA - Def)
Assuming GWS trade two of the mini draft selections these two would slip into my top 30:
Lachlan Plowman (VIC - KPD)
Matthew McDonogh (SA - Fwd)

I actually haven't heard anything re: compo pick and FS. Seeing as you have to nominate them at the begining of the year, they become set before FS nomination....

Whitfield is a beauty isn't he?

More than a couple of AFL players have made mention that they could have done with him in their sides this year. Endurance is absolutely elite and allows him to run and run and run and work any opponent over.

With the F/S selections - with Hunter particularly I wanted to put him in there because he is a top 30 quality guy, but probably wouldn't use an early selection on him with some better early talents.

Unsure of whether clubs can be forced into using a compo pick on a F/S, but perhaps WBD can use their 2nd rounder on him - which would be a BIG win.

Viney I put him at the higher of the compo picks since I have Melb inside my top 8 meaning the compo pick would be their 1st selection. Viney would be a top 5 or 6 talent otherwise so thought I'd just place him at Melb's first selection.

But don't get caught up too much in these things. More just a general idea of some of the higher end talents who will likely feature in the 2012 draft.

Maybe over Christmas some time I'll start up a 2012 AFL mock draft and do maybe the first round or two.

Isnt band 2 a single first round pick to be used immedaitely after the teams normal first round pick?

Yep, but I couldn't be bothered guessing the ladder for next year. The idea was to illustrate how long the first round will be next year.

Never even thought that there are so many clubs compo picks to be used:p Damn the AFL and giving out compo picks! Brisbane should have been only team given them:D God hope GWS don't sign anyone next year... wishful thinking I think.

The Ablett pick we have left is after our first rounder. GC have the middle of first round pick which we traded for the pick we took Smedts with. It is correct though that if everyone loads up with their compo picks it will be diluted to all buggery. Makes it more appealing to either do what we did to get Smedts last year or take a dip at 17yo in the mini draft.

But, but, but I thought that 2011 was the last "compromised draft" related to the expansion sides .........
