This thread is for general in-draft discussion regarding both Geelong's strategy and picks by other clubs.

To discuss Geelong's draft picks specifically and as they happen, please head to the relevant thread.

2011 Rookie Draft selection no. 18
2011 Rookie Draft selection no. 36
2011 Rookie Draft selection no. 54

How did we get three picks? I thought we only delisted two rookies, or does that mean we're only using one spot on the veteran list next year?
I think we have three because we take Blicavs at 54 which doesn't count to the list.

Some wanted us to take boseley in the national draft and we didn't even take him at pick 36 in the rookie draft !!

Boseley will probably play with our VFL team next year anyway if he doesn't get picked up.

Well done on your prediction though VC. 2 mid types.

Gillies will have to have a better year next year because we haven't drafted any additional tall back cover in this pool. Mangan's the one I would have liked us to look at, but he went to North.

Good picks though, Sheringham can do as well next year as Simpkin has done I reckon.

To be fair I did say ball magnets. And they dont seem to be that. Although I know stuff all about sheringham.

Might go and read the VFL end of season report.

Sheringham's not really a ball magnet in the real sense of the word, although he can find it. Is quick, good skills, loves to tackle and can score goals, very similar player to Simpkin stylistically. Will be interesting to see if he gets a go next year.

A few things.
In both drafts we didn't really look at a key backman. Ok, maybe one that has the potential to play there.

No long term project ruckman

And I'd love see a list of players that didn't get redrafted.
(no idea how to find the info)

Nablett
Fevola
Lovett
Davis
Gamble
Valenti

Valenti?

Don't know about a voluminous list, but you can at least remove the question-marks in relation to Ryan and Valenti.

They didn't get over the line anywhere.

We did in Hamling. In a lot of ways he's a better project back than many of the others who have question marks over their kicking, he's got a good leap and good skills and I don't mind the pick.

I'm more surprised that they didn't take a more mature tall back, they must have more faith in Gillies than I do, either that or they think Walker or Bathie are likely to be ready this year, because we've got very little injury cover there.

I agree we could have taken a ruck project, although we can still do that next year, Orren buys us time in regards to the ruck setup, just need to re-sign West long term.

Not surprised on Ablett Fevola Lovett et al. Valenti is good but too slow for AFL. Quite surprised his teammate Dwyer didn't get a go though, very unlucky I'd have thought. Duscher and Sundberg are pretty unlucky too, the latter in particular can seriously play.
