Are Essendon legitimate top 4 chances in 2012?

Only round 1, but already look they have improved in some key areas. It looks like the switch has finally clicked for Ryder, whilst Hurley is due to take his game up to the next level sooner or later. Stanton looks like he is a better player than in previous years, whilst Heppell and a few other players should improve this year as well. Their midfield also looks a lot better than previous years and they have good key targets up forward. Combine all that with a pretty good draw, and they just might be able to push top 4 in 2012.

Thoughts?

Based on this week i would say NO , they dominated the stats this week including clearances and should of won by 6+ goals but almost coughed it up

Haha, suprised this was started by a Hawks supporter. Despite what some of our fans, the level headed ones will admit that we are far from top 4 material. I'm expecting top eight and maybe one win in the final if we get a favourable match-up.

Well considering we beat the team that I have been told is guaranteed to win at minimum 3 of of the next 10 premierships Id say yes.

But seriously no we are not a top four side and I think we are still 2 years away from being one IF everything goes to plan.

You played finals last year and several players look like they have taken the next step. You look good around the clearances and have a lot of talent. I don't see why you wouldn't be aiming top 4, particuarly with Collingwood & Geelong looking like they have went backwards this year. Door is open IMO.

Nope still not good enough defensively and allow too many easy goals. Too early to say pies and cats have gone backwards too.

Hawthorn
West Coast
Geelong
Collingwood
Carlton
Freo

are just some of the teams that come to mind (this early in the year) Obviously there can be bolters (Adelaide, maybe Essendon) but last year Essendon belted teams left right and center early on and then faded after the half way point of the season.

The real question is, how is the fitness base of the players? Another year in the system for the players should help them...but they are still a bit behind the pack (currently)

Yep, both gone already.

Both clubs should be focusing on the draft now.

Last year's 8th finishing team beat last year's 9th finishing team by 2 pts following a missed shot after the siren, and this is evidence they will finish top 4? If McIntosh kicks straight, does that mean the dons are no chance of finishing top 4?

Rather an odd thread.

No, well they looked a lot better and key players have improved out of sight. With a good draw as well, they are a genuine chance for top 4. Obviously nobody agrees with me, but they are a good side with Ryder, Stanton & Hurley playing to their full ability.

LOL

Grand finalists, Hawthorn and Freo (away), Round 1...LOL!!!

We struggled against North and you start a thread like this, seriously I don't know how people think sometimes.

In our last 2 games We got flogged by a team which finished 5th, and barely beat a team which is struggling to stay ahead of Richmond.

Id say no, North played like shit and they only beat us by 2 points? Basing it solely off that game, neither of us will be in the 8, let alone 4.

Besides problems around the clearances here and there, I thought North played ok. I thought you were lucky to be so close at the end though, as Essendon played good footy and were probably a fair bit better overall. Both teams are near certs for the top 8 and Essendon could push for the top 4. They played well and I can only see improvement from them here on in.

Would be happy just to make the finals again just to prove that we have improved and would rather be clearly in the in the 8 instead of scrapping in. Don't think top 4 is a chance. 6th would be the highest place we could get if we steal a couple of extra wins.
