Hawk felled

HAWTHORN midfielder Chance Bateman could be sidelined for up to six weeks after scans revealed a high-grade sprain to his right ankle.

Bateman injured the ankle during the first quarter of the Hawks' 29-point win over the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Sunday when his leg became tangled as he scrambled for the ball alongside teammate Grant Birchall and opponent Lindsay Gilbee.

....

"It could be quicker than that, but given we're right smack bang in the middle of the season, we'll respect that and he'll be ready when he's ready.

"But he won't play this week."

Good luck Changa!

It was a year when Father Time starting tapping Chance on the shoulder. His first year as a veteran on the Hawthorn list, he battled fitness and injury concerns throughout the year, and often seemed a shadow of his former self, particularly the 2008 model. While the 'gut running' still seemed present, it seemed that he was not winning as much of the ball, nor as fleet of foot, as he had been in previous years.

Only twice did Bateman record more than 20 disposals (against Port and St Kilda, in Round 7 and 8 respectively)

Supporters may have some mixed feelings about Chance playing on in 2012, although at least this will afford him a chance to leave Hawthorn (at the end of 2012, surely?) with hopefully better departing memories than his last quarter against Collingwood in the preliminary final; a quarter which certainly did not exemplify the customary effort, skill and determination with which he has graced the Hawthorn #10 jumper for over a decade.

No longer an automatic best 22, and his best years certainly behind him, he may still surprise a few Hawthorn watchers next year. A soldier and indigenous pioneer for the Hawks, he has earned a chance for another shot at a flag.

Spent 30 mins about 5m from Changa at the local swimming pool this afternoon. He was with others approx. his age & a couple of kids. The group appeared to consist of relatives or close family friends.

I tried to explain his blistering run through the guts to open the 2008 GF to my 3 year old girl but she's just learning hand-stands so it was kinda lost on her... She does awesome hand-stands & cart-wheels though ;-)

Bateman back with Demons. (Perth WAFL)

Perth have pulled off a massive coup by signing retired Hawthorn premiership midfielder Chance Bateman and former Essendon forward Kyle Reimers.

Demons chief executive Marty Atkins said Bateman had become a priority once he retired from the AFL at the end of last season.

The 31-year-old played 177 games in 13 seasons with the Hawks and was one of their best players in the 2008 grand final when they upset Geelong by 26 points.

Atkins said Bateman, a fourth-round pick and No.48 overall in the 1999 AFL national draft, would be a significant boost for the club, which last played in the finals in 1997.

"Chance started his career a long time ago in Perth colours, went away and had a fantastic career with Hawthorn," Atkins said. "For him to return and finish his football career where it all started is a big coup."
