THE AFL has made a rare mid-season tweak to high-contact rules, citing a groundswell of support for player safety.

From this weekend on, umpires will be encouraged to pay free kicks against players in possession that “drive” with their heads into other players.

The “drivers” will have to dispose of the ball or instead hear the umpire’s whistle and a free kick paid to his tackler.

The AFL’s guideline now reads: “Any movement where a player drives or leads with their head into a stationary or near-stationary tackler will be deemed as a drive and will be umpired as the player with the ball having had prior opportunity.”

“The player must immediately kick or handball or a free kick for holding the ball, under the prior opportunity rule, will be paid against him.”

Umpires boss Wayne Campbell said it was brought in as a safety issue, with Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson and Sydney coach John Longmire vocal supporters.

While tacklers will still be closely watched for high contact, Campbell said it was important that players with the ball played their part as well.

“We’ve incentivised someone to go in head first,” he told Fox Footy.

“We think the onus has been put all onto the tackler to protect the player’s head.

“We just think maybe players with the ball are taking advantage of that ... (and) we just want to shift the onus a little bit towards the player with the ball as well.”

While the move is being introduced mid-season, it won’t take coaches by surprise.

AFL football operations chief Mark Evans said the umpiring department had flagged a move in mid-May.

The AFL is seeking to encourage good technique when players are picking up the ball by turning their bodies to protect their heads, he said.

Just don’t call it a rule change.

“It’s not a rule change but it is an interpretation change,” Campbell said.

So this will be two rules that have been changed as a direct result of Lindsay Thomas.

No, Wayne Campbell already stated that Selwood is a shrugger not a driver, therefore, play on
Cool, so shrugging is fine then. Excellent. Commence shrugging LT.

Luke Darcy on MMM this morning gave him three separate whacks. For the third whack they had an AFL heavy hitter on, Darcy said "you know you dont want to name names here....but....Lindsay Thomas" and the AFL rep shot him down completely saying 2/3 of Lindsay's frees were well within the rules and will continue to be.

Cop that you flog.

Not sure how this bears much resemblance to Thomas to be honest...

If I had to pick the players most likely from our club to amend their technique based on this they would be:

Firrito
Thompson

Not sure if you're serious. His forward pressure and some of his delivery into the F50 was as good as anyone in the AFL. If he made mistakes I didn't notice. Is beyond reproach (EDIT: well, not quite, but seriously, he is a lock each week and vital to us. Busts his a*** every week).
you seriously didn't notice him having a windy attempt at soccering a ball he should have put his head over? If that was any other player they would be hung drawn and quartered....

Prepare yourselves for becoming completely annoyed when Lindsay is coathangered and it is play on.

The ball will go down the other end of the ground and we will have a free against for a different interpretation on a player who hasn't been called out about copping high frees.

Can't believe the avoidance of the obvious here by the AFL and media. Issue is solely around players intentionally lowering their body height by bending their knees. Christ Pendlebury was near on crawling when he got his free on Sunday. Selwood might shrug his shoulders but it is only the lowering of his body height that allows him to successfully shrug the shoulders.

Intentional lowering of body height should be considered ducking, play on.
If you are standing still and some one head butts you, stiff shxx, play on.

Dumont did one on Sunday, umpire called play-on (as it should be) and froggy just bounced off and got a clean disposal away.

I can't understand what's so difficult: if a player deliberately causes a free-kick against themselves (by ducking, diving, shoulder shrugging, dropping forward when tackled to cause a push in the back, etc) then it's your own fault and it's play on. The reason the AFL have built grey areas into the rules is to allow the umpires to make judgement calls - well use that power! Instead they get sucked in by their favourite players and by which section of the crowd is booing the loudest.

Yep. This concerns me too.
