There is an interesting psychological difference between building up your own player and trading one in... I don't know that any one here really appreciates fully that we have added an elite midfielder for the next two seasons at least (barring injury which is the same risk for any player). It's also true that we wont get the full 10+ years you hope for when you add an elite player to a team, but nevertheless its 2 whole years during which we are in something of a flag window!
In essence we are doubling down on a Zaka style player, who will probably get more touches while Cooney should get more goals.
Our midfield on paper has become something fairly extraordinary. Two arguably top 10 midfielders in Watson and Heppell. Completely mature class and character coming from BJ, Chappy and Cooney. Top level outside run coming from Zaka, Stanton and Colyer. Leaving only Myers who is still building and adds another facet to the mix with that left foot.
It's always true that things can go wrong and of course there is no denying that we could run into trouble with the older guys getting injury prone or simpy slowing down. But if they don't? If Myers, Colyer and Zaka consolidate and build form? There is an outside chance that we could have as good a midfield as anyone in the comp this year.
(I do love to dream )

Colyer, Zaka and Stanton are not top level outside run. Great players on their day but their are better players in the comp who play that role which could be defined as top level.

In my broad and sweeping definition of top level, it includes those players and some who are better ;)
Zaka is top level or elite, or however you want to put it. I have no qualms about that.
Stanton is of course debatable, but now that we have enough quicker players around him, i think we could find ourselves resting far more easy with him in a running link up role.
Colyer was hugely exciting last year. I loved the way he not only used his speed, opened up the game and kicked goals, but also how strong he was overhead. It's true that he cannot be regarded as top level yet, but i have a heap of faith that he will back up last year and be regarded in that light by the end of this year. It's not always easy be so confident in players, but Colyer just really seems to have done the work to round out his game. With Cooney and Zaka not doing much defensive running, Colyers ability in that area becomes that much more significant.

They don't have to be the best in the league in that position, they just have to be good at it, and they're certainly already there. Hopefully they improve, but it's not vital to the team that everyone in every position and role is in the elite category. In fact it would be almost impossible for them all to be having 20 penetrating effective kicks per match.

I'd rather have the load shared and them all be referred to as 'good' than have one so-called 'elite' player and two guys who don't get a look-in.

Sometimes I'd swear some fans forget this is a team sport, not an assembly of individuals. Cooney adds an excellent talent forward of the centre, much like Chapman, they will turn those half-clearances into goals.

Define define? Would you like an absolute definition that cannot be refuted? Or would you like politicians definition which exists only in the moment that it is uttered?

Fantastic debut for our club, ran out of steam but who didn't?

Looks super fit so hopefully in for his best season of footy for some time.

Suarez-esque hat-trick from Coons! 3 crazy good goals.
Why are you dissing Coons with a comparison to that racist, biting, all-round s**t bloke?
