Traded Liam Jones (#943)

I don't want to burst the bubble, because I have like Jones ever since that fateful night where we shared a 5 minute drunken phone conversation, but Richmond's defence is shite even when they are at full capability. Think Gilbee/Minson 10 goals between them.
To be honest I completely agree, but what impressed me most with Jones the other night was his work rate, he was really going at the ball and trying to get in a position to get the ball from a teammate. s**t defense or not, he was impressive.

I think that the problem last year with Jones was entirely of his own making and not due to poor delivery. He was continually shuffled out of the marking contest. I used to call him the Queens Slipper, after those playing cards.

Hopefully this year he has learned how to counteract double teaming and use his naturally gifted high spring to best advantage.

Lets all remember how well he played in the intra club last year. Absolutely dominated it and grabbed everything that went his way. I spoke to many who were rating him as the next big thing off the back of it.

So the signs are good early given his confidence levels but doesnt mean it will translate into a good season.
We can all hope - but lets not expect !

And speaking of such things - anyone suggesting Stringer to be part of our starting 6 forward line have to be kidding themselves. Let the kid get through his first year without any expectations on him. If he plays a half dozen games well good - but lets not talk the kid up to be a starting 6 forward before the year is out.

I reckon it's pretty important that he gets at least a bit of a run as a starting 6 forward during the season.

Consider, we have him, Jones and Cordy on the list. If they are all destined to be forwards, then we should be looking to draft a midfielder with our pick this year, not another KPF.

The reason that is extra important, is that we're predicted by all to finish between 14th and 17th - i.e. the Tom Boyd/James Aish range...

If Stringer is good enough he will play. Age is not relevant in my opinion.

Yes it is. Well, how mature the mind and body are, which is usually the same thing as age.
I have little doubt that our younger players (1st and 2nd years) will be closely monitored and will be found to suffer from "general soreness" from time to time. That is they will be rested so they don't get knocked around or burnt out. Older blokes like Boyd, Griffen, Addison and Higgins can handle the hurly burly every week, but typically not 18-20yos. Those that can are the exceptions.

In before some ignoramus makes fun of this.

Haha. Self-referential joke?

Actually Higgins is same height and allegedly 2kg less than Wallis ... it will be interesting to see how each goes. The mail was that Higgins had trimmed down a kg or two but the WB website says he's the same as last year (88kg).

Nope I'm a big Higgins fan. I just think he gets the Gia treatment. Hence the joke.

I was going to make the ignoramus comment because lets face it... Higgins hasn't stood up to the hurly burly too often.

He doesn't deserve some of the heavy-handed criticism he gets, but lets be real about it and admit he does have a problem with his ability to physically remain fit.

But the fact that he has at all and that he has done so in finals makes him more qualified than 75% of our list.

Whoa, just checked the thread title. Umm that Jones boy will surely be helped by Higgins standing up to the hurly burly...(/shifty eyes)...

THE SCENE playing out at the other end of the ground was a familiar one for Liam Jones on Sunday.

He had watched Jack Riewoldt lead, double back, and then lead again on tape so many times before. Only this time, Jones was doing the same thing at the opposite end of Etihad Stadium.

Riewoldt kicked five goals to power Richmond to a 67-point win over the Western Bulldogs on Sunday.

With limited opportunities, Jones booted a career-high four goals to be one of the Bulldogs' best players.

"I watch a lot of Jack Riewoldt's stuff. Just his leading patterns and where and how he gets the ball," Jones told AFL.com.au after the game.

In his quest to become an improved player, Jones admits he studies copious amounts of vision of the competition's best forwards.

Expectations have been high on the 22-year-old since he arrived at the club with pick No. 32 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

At times, in 2012, he was unable to meet them, but Dogs coach Brendan McCartney felt Jones had made some significant headway in his 40th AFL game.

"He was terrific, wasn't he?" McCartney said post-match on Sunday.

"It was actually good for him to mark the ball so cleanly and win his one-on-ones and convert. It was a good step in the right direction for him."

The impact of Bulldogs' specialist coaches and Geelong premiership players Cameron Mooney and Matthew Scarlett has been significant on Jones this season.

Jones has regularly sought Mooney's advice on where to position himself in certain situations as a forward. Scarlett's instructions have been built around making Jones a harder player to guard against.

Jones says the advice has been invaluable and he believes, in time, he will be better placed to impact games more often.

"As I get more games under my belt, the more relationships I build with my teammates," Jones said.

"I got a lot of space [Sunday]. The forwards have started to work well together to give each other space and create a lot of one-on-ones.
"We just need to hold the ball in there (inside 50) for longer."

I'm pretty excited by Jones, geez the crap he copped last year was ridiculous (I'm not saying he had a good year but it was way over the top) and I said numerous times that he will bounce back and to get off his back, countless times! Good to see him proving me to be the genius that I am

Kicking actions looking good, tank has improved, marking is good as usual, applying great defensive pressure, doesn't look to be running under the ball as much and his positioning/body work has definitely improved. Still only 22 in a bloody poor team as well.

Definitely the best forward prospect we have had in years (that has actually played AFL, dw Stringer will be here soon :p)

2008 drafts looking pretty important to our future right now. FB in Roughy (geez he looks good down there) FF in Cordy (I still have hope, will be at the very least a serviceable player but still important to our structure, hopefully more) CHF in Jones (Looks the goods) and Picken.

It's funny, I was critical of the club taking two ruckman in the one draft. It turns out both Cordy and Roughead won't be primarily ruckman. So all good. Even if Cordy doesn't turn out, 2 out of 3 good talls is a good draft. One of the few drafts Clayton's done well in.

Jones looks so much more improved this year. I mean a lot. It really shows the benefits of a good pre season and perhaps a bit of a change in attitude. The biggest criticism I had on him last year was work rate both offensively and defensively. Now he's repeat leading and chasing guys down. It's so good to see.

We should really put Hansen on as an assistant coach at the end of the year by the way. I would much rather him over Steven King or Shannon Grant.

correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't that draft the first Dalrymple draft?

Looking at Jones' work on the western bulldogs site, he is a really good speaker for a young man
He does really well with the "this or that" segments on the site. Would be funny on the footy show, i suspect. Alot of the adam cooney's about the way he approaches the media, with his humor.
