Don't think it was a great draft and I don't think he was a first rounder.
He was taken in the first round of a very compromised draft. First round went until pick 26 that year. Plus there were Priority and Compo picks (4 in total) between the first and second round, so the second round started at pick 31. As for the players that were taken shortly after our pick 18 that are arguably better players than McKenzie, here is a list:

Seb Ross - St Kilda - pick 25
Sam Kerridge - pick 27 (could be a dud and a North specialist)
Michael Talia - pick 39.

Fairly weak draft.

Sam Rowe - pick 44
Jordan Murdoch - pick 48
Lachie Neale - pick 58 and now looking great

Given we also wasted a pick on Tom Curran that year (despite his injury being known at the time) it was a fairly bad year for us.

Brad Hill as well

Chicken or the egg with Brad McK.

While he has inherent deficiencies he also has some great strengths. I thought the point of coaching and development would be to minimise one area and enhance the other?

Since he's not exactly the only player having me wonder what the hell we work on in our preparation (or whether we've managed to successfully deskill, demotivate and neuter a few blokes recently) I'd be hesitant to judge him on this basis.

David Hale was a corpse of a player in 2010. In a good side under proper tutelage he's now got 2 flags playing a key role.

Brad McKenzie isn't such a different player to a Clint Young or Matt Suckling imo both of whom managed to round their games out.

I honestly don't think any player development was done with McKenzie.

We were told he was a really skinny kid that needed to put on size so don't expect to see him for a while (I was already skeptical then because she half back flankers normally always get a gig - plus he's not a KPP).

At a time we are crying for a player with decent foot skills in the back half (so much so we are forced to play are best attacking player down there) we read stuff like this...:mad::mad:

Soft mentally?

Do you know him personally?

What a campaigner of a thing to say.

The kid is struggling with footy, no need to question him as a person!

Soft mentally in regards to football.

Effort is related to mental capacity and will. Winning the football is related to effort. He's shown that he struggles with this at both vfl and afl levels .

Lacks required effort and will to play at the top level.

There was a post on here a few weeks back which implied that Brad was pissed that Benny J was getting a game before him at AFL level.

Well, mate...

Our rightful top end talent has been decimated by 'laidley error' drafts and trading, compromised drafts, and mid road finishes.

We almost had a father son windfall with lmac, kelly & Brayshaw. But we did not get the geelong like leg up that can almost guarantee a flag.

We may have only paid a dime for the King, but the footy gods have found a way to even out the 'top end' ledger ever since.

Kick in the shin or a poke in the eye imo but to each their own.

Zero intensity, no pace, can't tackle and is soft. Either he shapes up or he should be traded or delisted. I'm over carrying players in the hope they may turn it around. If you don't show anything in your first 4 years as a mid/flanker then sayonara. We have too many players the same which is why we are vanilla.

According to the roosters Twitter account he had 6 touches at quarter time.
So did he get injured or sit out the rest of the game? because I find it hard to believe he didn't touch it in the last 3 quarters.

Would seriously like an answer to this one?
