Season 2011: Round 12 Hawthorn vs Geelong - Season over.

Sadly, the big fella went down in the last quarter as he moved in to contest a rucking situation. All look so innocuous as he was by himself, moving slowly and then went down with a ruptured Achilles. Surgery options to be assessed later in the week. Wear & tear, pre-disposition to injury or just plain bad luck.

A great season comes to a close with Roughead finding a new position in the line up, having bursts in the ruck to add to his forward line efforts. Will be good to see him come back, fitter and stronger in 2012!

This is an example where the changes in the rules of the game can benefit a player. Since his breakout season in 2008 where he scored 75 goals, Roughie has been much maligned by our supporters, seen as an underperformer in the shadow of Buddy Franklin. It was not just Roughie, our whole team underperformed.

However, it was against St Kilda in Rd 8, 2011 that Roughie emerged as the ‘mobile ruckman’. In this game, Gilham and Hale went down with knee injuries by the 10 minutes mark of the 2nd quarter and we were down by 30+ points at quarter time. It was left to Roughie to shoulder the ruck with assistance at times by Buddy. Supporters were nervous seeing our two stars in the ruck, but Roughie won the game for us with 20 disposals and 17 hitouts. There was no looking back from there and we could hear Gerard Healy scream out ‘Roughie is a ruckman’. Our supporters rejoiced.

In the ruck, Roughie seemed more comfortable, being able to influence the game, run more than he would in a ‘crowded’ forward line and use his marking power around the ground. This had the benefit of Roughie as the perfect 2nd ruckman, but also highlighted the importance of Roughie in the forward line structure. Without Roughie, supporters noted that Buddy was usually double or triple teamed, and we were exposed due to our lack of crumbers or a genuine ‘3rd forward’. We knew that Roughie would take the 2nd best backman, but we were struggling for depth in the forward line without big Roughie.

From round 9 to round 12 Roughie continued to dominate, amassing more than 20 disposals in each game as a 2nd ruck. Hawks supporters saw the light, and Roughie was now seen as the Hawks most important player. Hope turned to tragedy in Rd 12 at the MCG. In the last quarter, what seemed to be a standard boundary throw-in, resulted in Roughie falling to the ground on his first movement. Hawks supporters were left looking around the ground to spot the Al Queda sniper that shot our Roughie in the leg. To our dismay, Roughie had popped his Achilles, and was ruled out for the season. Then came the insensitive headlines ‘Pop, there goes the premiership’. From Round 13 onwards, Roughie was on the sidelines watching his team march towards the 2011 premiership, only to be pipped at the finish line by Collingwood.

Today, Roughie is recovering from Achilles surgery, and is in line for a return Round 1, 2012 if all goes well. We will see what his role will be, we can imagine the Hawks will take a cautious approach with him, most likely playing forward for the first half of the year and pushing to the 2nd ruck position in the 2nd half of the year if fit and injury free. We can bet that Roughie will have a 100% recovery and continue to improve as a player and leader given he was handed the vice captaincy in 2011.

Roughie on the road to recovery. Great to see he is able to play in an intraclub, good signs. :)

Bit of a fluff article about the big Rough. Dont think he is any chance to play R1, or to put it better I hope he doesnt play R1. No sense in rushing him back from such a big injury. Season is a long one, let him come back later on...

What makes you believe he is being rushed?

He is either ready to play, or he isn't.

Well nothing really, it was a poor choice of words. From everything I've heard he is ahead of schedule - im a cautious type, would rather see him take a fair chunk of the start of the season off to do his own preseason - similar to what Burgoyne did when he had that facial injury (think it was face...). Obviously if the club says he is good to go then he is, but given his limited preseason I would prefer he took the extra time.

Roughie's comeback hits a little snag, copping a corky in the Box Hill game on the weeked. From all accounts he played well, though rusty, and more importantly was moving freely and wasnt showing any reservations about the achilles (running at full tilt, jumping, etc).

Meant to post last week, went along to the Hawks v Freo PS game at Subi, Roughs first game back. Played in the backline the whole game, field kicking was generally good apart from an early turnover. Launched himself at a few high balls, still has the classic Roughy leap. :thumbsu:

    Get Around Him!

Roughy made a triumphant return to AFL football this week, playing a pretty solid game and getting through relatively unscathed. The team wasnt able to get a win, but I thought Rough more than did his part. Got the teams first goal, at which point it looked like every player on the ground got around him. I lost my shit, was hi-fiving everyone around, and if they didnt want a piece of it I hi-fived their face. :D:thumbsu:

Rough played three positions, which I thought was a bit odd for his first game back. Started forward and looked pretty good, had the early goal and accumulated 4 touches in the first quarter. He was soon moved into the ruck to spell McCauley and did okay. First contest he looked very hesitant, didnt jump at all and tried (unsuccessfully) to rove the ball. After that initial contest he looked a lot better, jumping like normal and attacking the ball. While playing forward you could see he and Buddy havent lost any chemistry, received a beautiful deft tap from Buddy to sent him into goals, but pushed the shot wide.

Also played down back, pretty much once Hawkins started to properly get a hold of Boots. Thought he did a pretty solid job on Hawkins once down there, earnt a few free kicks by being first to the ball (great asset in a defender) and generally bodied well. Overall a pretty solid first game, looks rusty in patches (ran under the flight of the ball, jumped early, etc) but overall pretty good. Almost took a massive pack mark with barely 5 seconds left in the game, would have been shooting after the siren from ~40 out if he had taken it! Can only build from here though. :thumbsu:

    Stats for the game:

    16 possessions (Qtr breakdown 4 / 4 / 3 / 5)
    7 kicks, 9 handballs
    2 marks (both uncontested)
    3 tackles
    1 spoil
    1 critical error
    2 1st disposals
    4 clearances
    3 frees for, 0 against
    1 goal, 1 behind
    1 score assist
    85% TOG

Couple of articles after the win over Adelaide. Both covering similar topics really, its all about his ruck time at the moment.

Also, quick report on his game over the weekend. With Broc a late out, I assumed Hale would be starting in the ruck and Roughy up forward. Got quite the shock to see Roughy starting in the middle! Up against the big sauce Sam Jacobs, he was pretty much dominated throughout the match in pure hitouts. He had a massive advantage once the ball hit the deck though, and was able to follow up Jacobs taps, either affecting a tackle or getting a clearance. Although he was beaten in the hitouts it looked like we won the clearances, so thats a success.

Once again he played various positions throughout the match. I think one of Roughs biggest strengths is his versatility, being able to play 3 positions well is a huge beneift to the team. Will be interesting to see what happens with Broc back in the side - whether he will continue to ruck, start back or forward. Very hard to pick where he will line up any given week, would be hard as the opposition match commitee trying to account for him!

Will have stats up at a later point.

    Edit: Stats

    22 possessions (Qtr breakdown 5 / 6 / 4 / 7)
    10 kicks, 12 handballs
    6 marks (1 contested)
    8 tackles
    3 spoil
    3 critical error
    4 1st disposals
    4 clearances
    1 inside50
    0 goals, 1 behind
    1 score assist
    85% TOG

Been a bit quiet in here? Hello?

Thought I would drop in and request - More LIKES FOR ROUGHIE!

Especially since he will be on The Footy Show tonight... I just hope they don't use the bright blue background like they did last time... not the best mix for his... colouring. ;)
