This is what I am going to say about out side. Our midfield is pitiful and gets belted week in, week out. Despite looking good on paper, it fails more than succeeds. We have far too many medium sized defenders on our list and no up and coming onball specialists. We have been burnt by recruiting 190od CM athletes and neglecting to recruit players who can play on the ball and have a footy brain and go about playing the game properly. We also desperately need a couple of tall forwards.

So What we need to do is go hard for onballers with footy brains and that are decently built. No more 190od cm lightly built runners. We have a few midfeilders coming to the end in 3 or so years so we need to have the replacements ready. In regards to tall forwards we have quite a few on the list but they take a long time unless they are out and out guns to make an impact. So what we need to do is go hard at drafting a few Josh Kennedy type midfeidlers and and to forget about the whole athlete crap and pick good footballers and worry about turning them into athletes later, not the other way around.

#8 Brisbane- Mason Shaw (WA – KPF/Ruck)
Height: 198cm, Weight: 92kg, DOB: 15/01/1994
Recruited from: South Fremantle
Style: Brad Ottens/Kurt Tippett
Player comparison: Jonathan Patton
Range: 5-25
Profile: Strong marking key forward. Has a presence, marks out in front and can take a contested grab. Had a sensation 2011 season scoring 66 goals which is a great return for the young key forward. Has good accuracy from both general play and set shot attempts. Also Shaw is a serious big game player kicking 7 goals in the grand final which is a big return and shows potential to continue being a big game player into the future. Has played in the ruck but I most like Shaw as a key forward and see that as the position where he can impose himself on matches most as a big marking target.

Possibly in our range?

Thanks to Knightmare and his mock. http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/knightmares-2012-mock-draft.956129/

Me want him now please

Would be a dream come true, don't reckon he'll last that long though.

Haven't had time to follow it this year so I don't know much but he's in my list of three things I'd love for us to get.

Reckon we'll have pick 11 with North and the Saints finishing ahead of us, we're not gonna let the Tigers finish ahead of us surely?

If it ment being able to get an absaloute need then so be it

If we got him I'd be happier than a pig in... Well you get the drift... Sad to say he's the best contested ball winner this draft and will be top 5 :(
We'll get a player. I don't know the players like StuckinHill does, but someone like Vlastuin, Wines, Mayes or a tall should be there. Thinking we might finish low enough to get a forward.

Even though we've got Jamison, Watson, McCarthy, Laidler, Bootsma and McInnes, I'm not opposed to taking a lockdown and no fuss tall defender. Laidler and Jamison are very good when they're fit, but their injury struggles might continue. McCarthy is an unknown, but the club might rate him enough to overlook a defender.

Players who I'd like that fall in our first pick range (8-14) no particular order

Mason Shaw - Tall Forward
Jake Stringer - Tall Forward/Mid (injury concern the only possible reason for slide)
Oliver Wines - Midfielder
Jonathon O'Rourke - Midfielder
Troy Menzel - Forward (Injury concerns)
Nick Vlaustin - Midfielder/Defender (playing HBF, considered by many to be ideally inside mid)
Kristian Jaksch - KPP (either end)

Players likely to fall into our Second pick range (30-35) who I'm interested in (harder to tell obviously)

Nathan Hrovat - Mid
Matthew Haynes - Mid (unlikely to slide, very strong athlete)
Tim Membrey - Forward (undersized KPF)
Marco Paparone - Tall Forward
Adam Carter - Small Defender/Mid
Dom Barry - Mid

Pick 8, 30 & Russell --->Adelaide
Adelaide----> Tippett & pick 60'ish

Would you do it?

No.

As in my post above there are several very good KPF prospects who will be hanging around at 8. Shaw or Stringer would be much more attractive to me then Tippett.

Kurt misses too many easy shots for my bp anyway

ok hypothetical here, we are not gonna finish last or even bottom four. so the best kkp will be gone. now we have to look at kpp with limitations, the hypothetical is what is the best characteristic of a kfp?
*marking
*ground work
*goal kicking
*pressure
* other

Wouldn't say no to a rookie ruck-man at all. Hardly a risk not worth taking.

It's possible I guess, but he'd have to be pretty amazing for us to hand over our first selection for him.

Just at this stage, I'd be surprised if we didn't select mids with our first two selections, unless a quality tall was to slide.
Having said that, it's all still early and anything can change in this weird season.

Blues are going no where unless they can obtain a key forward, must be doubts on Rowe/Casboult whether they are senior players and Mitchell has a long way to go at this stage, we cannot go into another season with a reliance on Jarrod Waite, as his body is almost shot.

I think there are a couple of father/sons playing for Calder Cannons. One is Justin Madden's son and i think the other might be Greg Williams son. Anyone know how they are going, especially young Madden, and if they are a chance to be drafted with one of our late picks?

Would love Haynes as well nice height freak pace little bit of x factor about him

Just a reminder young tall forwards take at least 3 yrs untill they become good - are you willing to wait that long?

Not sure our list is as close to challenging as what we had previously thought, so think we need to start looking at building a team that is better structurally we need a decent key forward and another mid via draft or trading, Waite is 30 and his body is gone & Judd needs more support or else he will decline in the near future

i watched the Adelaide players closely at the U18 Carnival game.

Players i really liked were:

Jimmy Toumpas - most likely gone before us but you never know if we have #8 or #9 (ala Heppels slight drop in his year). Looked in command of the situation at all times. Love that in a player.

Sam Mayes - would really like to add him to our side. Our pick around #9-12 could snare him but wouldn't be surprised if he goes higher. Looked the complete package for a future AFL player.

Matt McDonough - 2nd Round pick. I see him as an ideal goal kicking utility/3rd forward. Like Porps or Ryan Okeefe or Chappy. Now that is excellent company but if he makes it(who knows with these kids) that's what he looks like he could be from what i saw.

There are 3 types of player we need from this draft

1. The main type of player we need is a tall marking forward I would be happy if we added 2 to our list.

2. I think we should trade for this type a liegh brown type of ruck/ forward I'll go after McKernan from Adelaide

3. An inside mid I'm less worried about this then what I was a month or two ago because I think McLean might get a contract for next year.

Still think best available is the way to go. ..

1. Wouldn't say no to another forward but would be just as happy for fitness and continuity in the ones we already have. ..

2. A forward ruck would be good but similar to number 1. ..

3. Carrots has stepped up and assisting with the inside mid part of his game. .. Macca has shown he is good depth (surprised to say that). .. Curnow, Ellard and a couple of others (Rookies) are possible good depth here too. ..
