grovedale will improve cowboy thats for sure
there will be at least a dozen new players in the side for round 1 against st marys and i'm tipping the game will be alot closer than everyone thinks.Condy and banjanin will be playing vfl round 1 so the old saints just might be ripe for the picking

Dreaming.

Banjanin will play VFL, true, but Condy won't be. Mary's have too many good and established players for Grovey to get within 5 goals of them. That's the simple facts. You can recruit BFL players and blokes from the bush all you like but that doesn't mean anything here yet.

Has Mark Corrigan retired?

Geelong Advertiser sports editor Jason Shields runs a ruler over the Geelong Football League's elite, unveiling the top 50 players expected to shape the competition this season.

1. Matthew Scarlett (South Barwon)
One of the AFL's all-time greats has stepped back into country footy and has barely missed a session in pre-season and has been a dominant presence in practice matches.

2. James Allen (Lara)
Triple Magarey Medallist who has returned to Lara and will be the gun midfielder in an emerging Lara team. Not big in stature, but just keeps on finding the footy and is super smart with ball in hand.

3. Tim Sheringham (Bell Park)
Experienced Dragons midfielder who leads from the front with his attack on the ball and clean hands. Prime mover in a team which will contest the premiership this year.

4. Clinton Wells (South Barwon)
The towering Swans forward who always delivers in big games. Has an amazing finals record and shows no signs of slowing down, kicking nine in a practice match against Northcote last week.

5 David Wojcinski (Newtown & Chilwell)
The big query over the former Cats' star will be his body, with injuries plaguing him during summer. But if he stays on the park, his speed will be virtually unstoppable.

6. Andrew McLean (St Mary's)
Key defender who has retired from Geelong's VFL team, where he was the general of the backline in the grand final win last year. Massive inclusions for St Mary's this year.

7. Andrew Kelly (Colac)
Kelly would have won the Mathieson Medal last year if he wasn't suspended. Key midfielder who is a tough ball winner in the clearances.

8. Casey Tutungi (South Barwon)
Gun midfielder who has returned to South Barwon full time after a successful stint at Geelong's VFL team. He has taken on a leadership role and is a hard man to stop.

9. Luke Vogels (GWSP)
Bit of an unknown quantity in the GFL, but the former Sydney Swan will be a key target for the Roosters this year after dominating in the Eastern Football League for the past two years.

10. Adam Donohue (Grovedale)
Has been a standout player with the Tigers since he departed from Geelong. Has elite skills and is dangerous in midfield or when he pushes forward.

11. Mitch Cuthill (Bell Park)
The real hard nut in Bell Park's midfield. Never stops running and is a great clearance player, feeding the elite Dragons runners.

12. Ben Raidme (South Barwon)
Quality midfielder who is on Geelong's VFL list. Can play a variety of roles and adds extra class when he is available at GFL level.

13. Raphael Clarke (St Albans)
Former St Kilda player steps back into country footy and should be a key cog in the emerging Supersaints outfit. Has plenty of pace and will create run.

14. Jason Tom (Leopold)
If Leopold is to play finals this year, the tall forward needs to have a big year. Genuine matchwinner with pace and agility for his height.

15. Andrew Banjanin (St Mary's)
Is on Geelong's VFL list, so his new club may be without him on occasions this year, but he is among the best ruckman in the GFL, as he showed at St Albans last year.

16. Dale Carson (St Joseph's)
Was one of the GFL's best forwards, now he is virtually unbeatable down back. Quick and tall with a great leap, he has a huge role following Daniel Lovick's departure.

17. Jordan Erskine (Grovedale)
Has been signed at Grovedale this year from Port Adelaide Magpies and is expected to make a big impact. Bit of an unknown here in Geelong, but he is one to watch.

18. Mitch Fisher (South Barwon)
Word is he was almost rookie-listed a few years ago by the Cats, but was cruelled by injury. He is back on the VFL list now, though, and has been flying in pre-season.

19. David Stretton (Lara)
Big recruit for Lara who has a decorated VFL career with Williamstown behind him. He is a life member of the Seagulls and Lara has talked up his outstanding leadership.

20. Adam Wiseman (South Barwon)
Now one of the veterans of the South defence and, despite achieving so much in his career, has a new lease on life down back with Scarlett teaching him new tricks.

21. Matthew Sully (Newtown & Chilwell)
Outstanding Eagles ball winner with plenty of class at both a GFL and VFL level. Expected to play a fair bit for Geelong, but makes a big impact at local level when available.

23. Rob Condy (St Mary's)
Has been recruited from Newtown and is on Geelong's VFL list. Tall and athletic, he will be a boom recruit for the Saints when not required by the Cats.

24. Ryan Normington (Newtown & Chilwell)
High quality player who can be used virtually anywhere. Had a big impact for the Eagles in his first year at the club and will improve now he really knows the group.

25. Peter Street (Lara)
The giant ruckman is getting older, but you can't beat size and there is no-one bigger in GFL footy. Has been a great player for Joeys and will be a key to Lara's finals chance.s

26. Sam Hughes (Leopold)
Has returned to the Lions den after a stint with North Ballarat in the VFL. Dangerous around goals, super quick and really sparks his team with that genuine X-factor.

27. Jai Sheahan (Newtown & Chilwell)
Has returned to his local club after a stint in the AFL with Melbourne. Talented 195cm forward who will help offset the loss of Brad Ottens and Jay Bett.

28. Nathan Peoples (North Shore)
Has been a shining light for the Seagulls over the past few years. Tall defender who rarely plays a bad game. Has been put on Essendon's VFL list, though, so may miss GFL games.

29. James Garvey (South Barwon)
Six-time premiership winning ruckman who is again coaching the raging hot premiership favourites. Not only a great tap ruckman, but also great around the ground.

30. Shaydon Bloomfield (Lara)
Gun forward who is lightning off the mark and strong overhead for his size. Kicked 68 goals in his first GFL season, averaging four goals a game.

31. Clinton Proctor (St Albans)
Coach of the Supersaints and a quality player in midfield. Recruited from Gippsland club Drouin and shows great leadership on and off the field.

32. Rhys Prismall (Lara)
Quality midfielder who was excellent for the Cats last year. Brother of former Geelong and Essendon AFL player Brent.

33. Flynn Chisolm (St Mary's)
Former Werribee player who made a big impact in his first season at St Mary's last year. Grunt midfielder who pushes forward and kicks goals.

34. Ben Johnson (Bell Park)
Huge presence in the Dragons' forward half. Takes a big grand and is coming off another great season.

35. Steve Paulke (Bell Park)
Will be like a new recruit for the Dragons after being restricted to a small number of games last year. Key forward who will play a big part in the Dragons' push for a flag.

36. Danny O'Keefe (GWSP)
Former Sydney Swan who has grown into an inspirational leader at West Oval. Has been plagued by injuries during his career, but is one of the most skilful players in the comp.

37. Lochie Veale (Colac)
Crucial player in the Tigers' make-up. Can play in the ruck or as a key forward and shoulders a big burden week in, week out.

38. Nathan Deans (Grovedale)
Pint-sized midfielder who clocks up the possessions for the Tigers. Won their best and fairest and never puts in a bad game due to his high work rate and clearance work.

39. Ben Capra (St Joseph's)
Quality defender who is on Geelong's VFL list. Uses the ball well and is a calming influence in the back half and is rarely beaten one-on-one.

40. Mitch McKee (South Barwon)
Has returned to the Swans after a few dominant seasons in the QAFL, where he was named in the team of the year in 2012. Quick half forward with plenty of tricks.

41. Alex McLeod (St Albans)
Towering full-forward who is hard to stop one-on-one due to his strength and size. Former WAFL player who kicked some big bags last year.

42. Guy O'Keefe (Leopold)
If he stays on the park, the classy left-footer is one of the most dangerous players in the comp. Former Bulldogs and SANFL player who struggled with injuries last year.

43. Ben Bucovaz (Bell Park)
Has been signed at Bell Park after stints with Fremantle in the AFL and Aspley in the QAFL. Versatile player who the Dragons may experiment with at either end.

44. Luke Buckland (South Barwon)
Returning to the club after one year at Geelong Amateur. Is one of the best in the comp on his day and should fit back in without too many worries.

45. Nick Batchelor (Bell Park)
Won the 2009 Mathieson Medal and remains a key part of the Dragons' outfit. Hard running player who has been on an AFL list during his career.

46. Jake Carmody (Colac)
Stop Carmody and you go a long way towards beating the Tigers. Key forward with great hands and straightens up a skilful Colac team.

47. Paul Carson (St Joseph's)
Former Mathieson Medallist who is now over 30, but still provides plenty of grunt and class in the midfield. Great clearance player and smart with ball in hand.

48. Alex Adams (Colac)
Can play either end of the ground and is one of Colac's experienced stars. Strong body and hard to beat one-on-one.

49. Chris Moreland (GWSP)
Making the jump from GDFL where he has been a star in Bell Post Hill's three premierships, but has played at a higher level with Newtown and on Geelong's VFL list and has pace to burn.

50. Kieran Paliouras (St Joseph's)
Has returned to the club after a stint with Werribee and could be anything. Has put on a lot of muscle since his Geelong Falcons days and looks a boom recruit.

good win by GWSP last week. Both very young teams but looks like St Albans might have a long year if saturday was anything to go by, in saying that though, GWSP were very impressive and should be looking to push for the top 5.

My tips for this week

Lara to beat Colac by 35 points
Leopold to beat St Joeys by 10 points
South to beat Newtown by 40 points
Marys to beat Grovedale by 2 points
Bell Park to beat North Shore by 60 points

Grovedale will improve and take it right up to St Marys, North Shore appear to have taken a big backward step with the loss of some key players, South will smash newtown. Also i think Lara will be a strong contender this year

14 new players named in tigers line up to play st marys this week i can see some big improvements at tigerland in 2013 and it may just start in round 1 cmon tigers

Who won today's games?

Looks like St Marys should have done their homework on the "BFL players and blokes from the bush".
Typical St Marys arrogance....

my tips for this week

Newtown to beat colac by 1 point
Lara to beat Leopold by 35 points
South to beat grovey by 40 points
Joeys to beat Albans by 50 points
Bell Park to beat Marys by 28 points
GWSP to beat North Shore by 58 points

Good win by GWSP. Bad news though is Lucas Boyd's injury.

A couple big games this week!
Much improved South V Joey's
Bell Park V GWSP
This said Souths & GWSP must both go in firm favourites!

I don't see GWSP as favourite. Not when they've lost their most influential tall forward. Will struggle to kick a winning score against BP now.

Anyone going to the game should note however that despite it being down as a Bell Park home fixture their change rooms aren't complete so it now becomes a GWSP home game.

What are people's thoughts on Grovedale this year? A very good win first up over St Mary's and then a thrilling 1 point loss to away to the reigning premiers on Saturday. Good to see they've improved greatly since last season IMO

Hopefully grovedale can continue the way they are going. Seem to be a very in and under side. Did Grovedale have chances against south?

For clubs outside of the top 5 teams it always comes down to depth. Get a few injuries and they struggle to then cover the losses of their better players.

I assume Grovedale will be in that ilk of club. Keep all the best players fit and they'll compete well. Lose a few key players and they'll struggle.

bloody oath they had there chances, yes the swans had a couple out but the pressure from the tigers was outstanding and just for once the all mighty swans looked a bit second rate.

why don't you ask the cowboy from hell he knows everything about the tigers oh hang on minute where has he gone since the tigers beat st marys in round 1

Yes they definitely had chances but just ran out of time in the end. Another thing I noticed with Grovedale on the weekend was the amount of supporters that follow them, I think there home ground could be a pretty intimidating place for other sides to visit this year. From what I saw of them on the weekend, if they can manage to have a good run with injuries this year, they may be able to challenge for 5th spot.

It's a shocking place to watch football. I hated playing there and even more so watching a game there. If it's a windy day it's the worst ground in Geelong!
