2013/14 Team of the Year (FC and OD)

Who would your team of the year be for either? The FC is pretty hard, which is a good sign. I'd go:

North
Carters
Cowan
Voges (c)
White
Cooper
Whiteman
Hopes
O'Keefe
Sayers
Behrendorff

Obviously I North and White would provide part-time options. My OD side (hard to remember haha) is:

Khawaja
Warner
Smith
White
S Marsh
Wade (c, +)
Cutting
Abbott
Tye
Holland
Hazlewood

Shield:
Forrest has 3rd most runs, best average and 3 tons, would be stiff to be picked after Cowan IMO. Otherwise, batting line up is good.

Feldman I think would be an unlucky 12th man, but think I'd also go Sayers/Dorff/Hopes as the three main pacemen.

Didn't watch/follow the OD much sorry!
It's more about where they batted as much as anything else. Cowan was basically the only player to make runs at 3, and I had him a close 4th behind Voges/White/Cooper, who didn't have full years.

Yeah, Feldman is unlucky, but Hopes' late season burst put him in ahead.

Fair! And agreed on Hopes. What a player.

Shield First XI

Marcus North (c)
Ryan Carters
Phil Hughes
Peter Forrest
Tom Cooper
Chris Lynn
Sam Whiteman (+)
Steven O'Keefe
Jason Behrendorff (how was this guy dropped mid season?)
Doug Bollinger
Michael Hogan

Top seven batsmen all in the top 12 run scorers, and the six specialist batsmen in all the top 13 averages scoring at over 50 per wicket with Whiteman at 48 per wicket. Voges unlucky as he was the only other batsmen to finish top 12 and 13 and miss out.

Shield Second XI

Joe Burns
Rob Quiney
Usman Khawaja
Callum Ferguson
Adam Voges
Glenn Maxwell
Chris Hartley (+)
James Hopes
Johan Botha
Luke Feldman
Chadd Sayers

David Hussey unlucky not to get in the second XI but opted for Maxwell as my explosive number six and he provides a better fifth bowling option although his output with the ball this year wasn't so great. The top eight wicket takers took all the bowling spots

Spot Allocation came out fairly unexpected from when I started

NSW - 3 / 0 / 3
WA - 4 / 1 / 5
SA - 2 / 3 / 5
Qld - 2 / 5 / 7
Tas - 0 / 0 / 0
Vic - 0 / 2 / 2

How the * did White not even get in your 2nd XI? He was 7th on the runs scorers list

So bat him at number 3. Perfectly reasonable to pick an opener to bat at three.
I picked the only bloke to consistently make runs at 3 in that position. Hughes is borderline in the first side, but not having White in the 2nd XI at least is just stupid. If I did a 2nd XI it'd be:

Hughes
Quiney
Cosgrove
Forrest
Lynn
Maxwell
Dunk (+)
Botha
Hastings
Feldman
Hogan

Cowan may have been consistent but he was still pretty underwhelming. It's perfectly reasonably to pick an opener who batted much better instead.

and then you select cosgrove averaging 33 and cowan averaging 38 over blokes like ferguson, khawaja and burns? go figure.

white averaged 45, every middle order bastmen i picked average > 50 except for maxwell.

white had a good season, but hardly extraordinary.

He had a good, consistent season. It's perfectly reasonable to pick the only player to do well at 3 all season at 3 as well. Just putting that out there.

I like the fact that they scored more runs than the blokes you mentioned.

White was arguably the best batsman mid-season, and was easily in the best 6 middle order batsman for the season. Of the 6 batsmen who made more runs than him this season, 3 opened the batting.

Yes, he is borderline on the first XI, but not to have him in the second XI is just lunacy. He definitely had a better eason than Lynn, Ferguson and Maxwell.
Can't believe they didn't pick Cameron White...
Woosh.

and i like the fact my guys averaged more than cowan, cosgrove and white.

you're talking about a bloke who averaged 45. hardly dominating. 10 blokes averaged over 50 AND scored 500+ runs to boot.

of course white will finish high on the run scoring. he had a good solid year and went to the crease almost as much as any other batsmen in the competition. plenty of other batsmen had better than good solid years.

The fact you can't acknowledge that the bloke who came 7th in runs scored in the comp isn't in the best 12 bats just shows how much of a clue you have.

that's a weird argument - the fact you can't acknowledge that the bloke who came 7th in the batting averages (even including Haddin 1 match and Smith 4 matches) in the best 12 bats just shows much of a clue you have. fwiw i'm more than comfortable with my cricketing knowledge and ability to rate and rank cricketers.

your acting like white topped the run scoring and the batting average. plenty of other blokes would have scored more runs had their team not been as poor as victoria and they had been able to the get to the crease as often as white.

Good one Ryan Carters for turning his career around. Not many would have had him close to the team of the year before the season started
Not many would have him close to the shield at the start of the season
