Post season operations to Hall and O'Meara make you realise what a crash and bash game it is.
Gold Coast is set to monitor the health of a number of players with several undergoing end-of-season surgery.
At least six players have, or will, go under the knife in the coming weeks, in a bid to ensure they are fit to return for what promises to be a club-defining season in 2015.
As confirmed by goldcoastfc.com.au earlier this month, Jaeger O’Meara will fly to Europe to meet with one of the world’s leading specialists and repair the patella tendon in both knees.
While the code’s recently crowed Best Young Player, as voted by at the AFL Coaches Association, is expected to be unavailable for the start of pre-season, head physiotherapist Adam Russell said O’Meara would be cleared to commence his rehab post-surgery.
“Jaeger has been booked in for early November, and will get both knees operated on before coming back to Australia,” Russell said.
“Pleasingly, we envisage he will be able to get straight back into rehab and commence his strength program not long after the operation.”
In further good news, Zac Smith is expected to be available for the start of pre-season training, with the Gold Coast ruckman making strong inroads following a right medial ankle injury.
While many of his teammates have holidayed overseas or returned to their respective home states, Smith has been a regular visitor to the club’s training facilities, with Russell pleased with the gentle giant’s rapid progress.
Meanwhile, Brandon Matera has undergone surgery on his troublesome groin, after an ongoing adductor issue failed to respond to treatment over the regular season.
“Brandon underwent an adductor tenotomy last Thursday, and is progressing well,” Russell said.
“He won’t commence running until closer to our return to pre-season training, but we’re confident he will return fit and ready.”
Luke Russell and Timmy Sumner both underwent successful hip surgery, with the former to begin a graduated-running program in the coming weeks.
A long-term approach will be taken with Aaron Hall, as the Gold Coast speedster recovers from groin surgery.
Gold Coast End of Season Surgery List
Aaron Hall – Groin
Brandon Matera - Groin
Jaeger O’Meara – knees
Luke Russell – Hip
Zac Smith – Ankle
Timmy Sumner – Hip
Needs brain surgery.I for one don't expect Sumner's surgery to boost his performance.
His bicep was corrected with the shoulder. He's still on track for preseason day 1.
What's with people writing this guy off? If he's not retiring he's even more injured.
Please. Sick of these bogus rumours.
That sounds right, its not like he would have tore it recently, can still barely lift his elbow above his shoulderHis bicep was corrected with the shoulder. He's still on track for preseason day 1.

Are you serious with the Jimmy G avatar!?!?Wonder if O'Meara may be undergoing a similar procedure to what Patton had done in Sweden in Jan 2012. He had patellar tendinopathy through his draft year, had the surgery to fix it and the rehab time looks to be similar. From memory Patton started playing twos around the start of May (3-4 months post-surgery) and spent about a month there because he'd missed the bulk of his first pre-season so needed at least a bit of match fitness.
No issues since, not with that knee anyway. He struggled with fitness at AFL level due to no pre-season but smashed the following pre-season, so it definitely worked for him.
I very much doubt that. I guess we'll see on first day of preseason.
Gary did have a bicep issue he was carrying through most of the season. It was corrected at the same time as his shoulder reco as something minor.
So if what Tony is saying is true, the worlds leading surgeon in this area botched a minor op considerably, or Gary tore 30 percent of his bicep off the bone since the brownlow medal awards just 3 days ago. When he can barely move that arm to even do anything with it.
So yeah, not really buying it. Tony isn't exactly known for his track record either. For now I'll stick with what Gaz says, in that he believes he's on track for day 1 of pre season.
I interpreted it a little differently in that perhaps Gaz may have hyperextended his elbow during therapy or exercise and due to his degraded muscle, injured the tendon - not because of the surgeon. But yes, I agree - it's very unlikely. So if what Tony is saying is true, the worlds leading surgeon in this area botched a minor op considerably, or Gary tore 30 percent of his bicep off the bone since the brownlow medal awards just 3 days ago. Realised I hadn't replied to this...Are you serious with the Jimmy G avatar!?!?
Well you got your wish last nightRealised I hadn't replied to this...
Hell yeah!
Haha would've gladly gone without that appearance...Well you got your wish last night
From another thread - thought I'd post it here too.Damo reporting on Trade Radio that Gary Ablett's shoulder surgery was much more complex than has previously been let on. Believes there were six "anchor points" when four is considered to be many and that he also suffered a torn bicep. Says the shoulder was very structurally unsound and he remains a long way off being able to train.
Yeah, it was mentioned a couple of weeks ago in another Suns thread, but I thought it was interesting that it was mentioned on trade radio.Fairly sure this has been covered already.
Maybe Damo's source was this thread?Yeah, it was mentioned a couple of weeks ago in another Suns thread, but I thought it was interesting that it was mentioned on trade radio.
HAHAHA wouldn't surprise meMaybe Damo's source was this thread?
