Welcome to the 2014 List Management thread

This thread is about general list management discussion. A bit of a catch-all if you like.

Who you think we should turf, who we need to get, which rookies get promoted, list analysis, player type/ages etc. There's a fair bit of leeway here if you want to incorporate any trade/draft/free agency stuff into your posts.

If you wish to engage in specific Trade/FA discussion or Draft discussion there are also dedicated Mega threads:

2014 Free Agency & Trade discussion

2014 Draft discussion

Player Contracts thread

We'll also keep the list status updated here as changes are made official and add any other useful information as we go.

We have 40 senior spots? I thought a list was 38.

Assuming no miracles, Clark (retired), Frawley (FA), Strauss, Blease, McKenzie, Evans are potential outs. Jetta comes in.
Jetta off the rookie, potentially Georgiou as well (promoted or delisted).

Is 40, they changed it. Makes sense as I did a copy 'n paste from last year.

Senior List

I agree with your summary there but will update once official. Jetta has been re-signed but list upgrade yet to be announced although safe to assume.

The old "get behind him full time or not at all" approach

Eh, depends where he sits. You'd think Roos has seen enough of him to know whether he's worth keeping or not. Can't see the point of giving him another year on the rookie list. His fate might be tied in with Frawley's, so he's probably a fair chance to get put on the senior list.

I think its 38 to 40 with rookie numbers decided based on your list size
Max rookies was reduced from 6 to 4 for non-concession clubs. I think that change was made in tandem with the changes to the Veterans rule.

In any case I'll leave it as 40 as we had 40 seniors in 2014 and will probably have that many in 2015.

Really minimum list size should be increased to 44 IMO. Anyway, that's another argument...

Key Defenders
Garland
McDonald
Dunn
Georgiou (R)

Small Defenders
Jetta (R)

Rebounding Defenders
Grimes
Terlich

Half Back/mids
(none)

Inside midfielders
N. Jones
Cross
Viney
M. Jones
McKenzie
Riley

Outside midfielders
Toumpas

Inside/Out midfielders
Vince
Tyson
Michie
Trengove
Harmes (R)

Half Forward/Mids
Kent
Salem
Bail

Key Forwards
Hogan
Dawes
Fitzpatrick

Small Forwards
JKH

Rucks
Jamar
Gawn
Spencil
King (R)

Utilities
Watts
Howe
Pedersen

Project players
Barry
Hunt

FA/who knows
Frawley
Clark

Goneski
Nicholson
Clisby
Byrnes

Chopping block
Evans
Blease
Tapscott
Strauss

So 3 list spots are open. I'm going to leave it as three simply to allocate one to the Mitch Clark rumour file.

Right now, our allocation of picks:

First rounder (#2OVR)
Second rounder (#21OVR)
Third rounder (#38OVR) (Expected to be Billy Stretch under F/S)
Fourth rounder (#56OVR)
Fifth rounder (#74OVR)
Sixth rounder (#92OVR)
Seventh rounder (#110OVR)

If Frawley leaves, add a pick and a list slot. So four slots to fill with eight picks. I'm expecting that to increase.

For mine, one pick will go on Nev. Latest possible.

I suspect a pick will go on Petracca. A pick will go on Stretch.

What we desperately need (just in case you haven't realised) is a player who can dispose well off half-back. Petracca is that deadly kind of cherry-on-top mid/forward that Colin Sylvia loved to be against Richmond - but if we can get that more regularly they're just so good to watch.

I wouldn't be surprised if Roos tries to turn Toump into that clean possession off half-back. That or Watts, because he's still one of the best kicks in the comp. Our back six apart from the clean touch is actually nice and settled again.

B: Garland Dunn Jetta
HB: ??? TMac ???

Our forward line is also a bit of an open question. Mostly because good luck getting them on the park. Fitz continues to surprise. He can do some dumb s**t, but he can play. Good depth.

HF: ??? Dawes ???
F: JKH Hogan Gawn

Really though, it's about the mids. If we can find enough talent, we can do a Sydney-style rotate everyone through both ends of the park. Malceski, McGlynn, Parker, Jack etc etc. That's why Petracca's so appealing - chuck him on a half-forward flank and rotate him through the middle.

Is Matt Jones not an outside mid? I know he can't kick, but doesn't that just make him a bad outside mid?

He's a bit of a hard one to categorise. I find his best work is done inside but he's probably an inside/out with his playstyle. To be honest, I don't know how long he'll be around anyway.

What happened to Clisby? He looked like a great find last year.
Got highlighted in the umpiring video for attempting to play on from a kick in without kicking it to himself and then rushing it back over the line. Hard to come back from.

Has Sam Blease been delisted?
MFC and blease have decided it's best that he be traded. So he's being traded. has not been delisted

Are you guys waiting until the trade period finishes to decide on further cuts to your list, or is Paul Roos taking a more conservative approach to delistings than external observers expected? I was sure there was going to be a mass clear-out at Melbourne over the off season, but so far the only departures have been Clisby, Nicholson and Byrnes.

I'd say Roos would be trying to trade off guys like Blease and Tappscott if possible rather than just cut them, even if they're just the steak knives in another deal.

There's no point mass clearing the list until you know who your'e bring in, if get rid of half the list then can't find talent to bring in then we are in no better position.

Absolutely, and I get why Melbourne are reticent to delist players who could potentially have value at the trade table (Blease, Tapscott, etc), but when it comes to the likes of Strauss, Evans, McKenzie, Bail or Terlich, I see no incentive to wait, since I don't think anyone would be willing to part with even a late pick for one of those guys.
