Quiet night at home so have been potting about the net, our membership tally for 2014 has begun, 3589.

I know a few of you out there are good at chronological comparisons. Let's hope the premiership effect is not in any way offset by buddy's departure. My early money is on 70,000.

I think we will almost certainly get over 65,000 members next year after winning this year's flag. If we can somehow manage to get over 70,000 then that would be a great result for the footy club. At the same time it's going to be hard though considering that Hawthorn has the most 'junior members' of all the teams in competition. This year around 28% of our members were junior members (under 15 years)

With Franklin departure now, it will be interesting to see just how many of those junior members sign on again for next year.

that stat on our junior member numbers is sensational, that all goes well for ongoing generational support and growth.

I was thinking that myself so even though we'll be lucky if we can get to a few games a year, the family and I joined up for the first time since 2004.

That said if you're a junior member you're likely than not wanting to back a winner. Typically a flag results in a 10% to 20% in total membership in the next season. In recent years the club that has recieved the lowest bounce was Geelong in 2012 (8%) while Collingwood (2011) and Hawthorn (2009) jumped 25% and 27% respectively.

Given its our second flag of the era I think the ounce will be considerably lower than in 2009 (probably 10/15%)

That puts us in 70,000 to 73,000 territory

Club membership in recent years...

2007: 31,064 (6th)
2008: 41,436 (1st) (+9,628)
2009: 52,496 (9th) (+11,060)
2010: 53,978 (7th) (+1,482)
2011: 56,353 (3rd) (+2,375)
2012: 60,841 (2nd) (+4,488)
2013: 63,353 (1st) (+2,512)

great analysis.

Evidently I think Buddy leaving will have a far greater impact on our merchandising than membership and even match day attendance. Football is tribal and you don't have the same bandwagoning effect that is prevalent in American Sports (otherwise Hawthorn, Collingwood, Geelong and Sydney would be the biggest clubs in the league and Richmond and Carlton would be just about dead).

Losing Buddy will probably mean the club can't flog off as much mass produced, Wide World of Sports type cheap merchandise to its fans...

Something else that always makes me smile is the fact that no matter how much Eddie brags, his club was not, and never will be, the FIRST Victorian club to reach 50,000 members!
Yep
So they went down the path of selling 1 game memberships + a scarf for $50 to be the first club to 70,000 members!

But we do have all the premiership merchandise - I have at least 17 emails so far reminding me that I can buy some.

Of those junior members, how many are bought and paid for by their parents? Even if there is some sentiment regarding Buddy, I'm sure the parents are gonna cough up for the Hawks membership.

FFS, if my kids ever asked for a Swine anything .... it just doesn't bear thinking about.

Interesting to see how many gold members on level two ditch the membership all together in favour of AFL membership following the cash grab of seat re-allocation. I know that in my group of 8, at least four have gone to AFL membership now. I'm sure the premiership will help to offset these though.

Does anyone else get frustrated with the inability to compare-apples-with-apples since the introduction of the reduced game memberships? Is there any data that compares membership tallies on a per game basis?

If we allocated (say) ...
- 16 game membership = 1.5
- 11 game membership = 1.0
- 3 game membership = 0.5
- 1 game membership = 0.25

... how would all the 2013 club tallies look then? How would they compare to previous years?

I'm not sure how you can get your hands on those numbers, I know the AFL release adult/concession/junior numbers but that's just about it.

Evidently since we started playing 7 home games in Melbourne in 2006 these are our attendance numbers across our 11 home games...

2006: 28,018* (34,381 in Melbourne, 16,496 outside Melbourne)
2007: 33,186 (42,205 in Melbourne, 17,402 in Tasmania)
2008: 39,975 (52,829 in Melbourne, 17,480 in Tasmania)
2009: 39,634 (52,225 in Melbourne, 17,600 in Tasmania)
2010: 37,876 (50,235 in Melbourne, 16,247 in Tasmania)
2011: 36,363 (48,238 in Melbourne, 15,580 in Tasmania)
2012: 34,105** (44,649 in Melbourne, 15,687 in Tasmania)
2013: 38,419* (52,808 in Melbourne, 13,237 in Tasmania)

* In both 2006 and 2013 we played home games at Docklands
** In 2012 we played 5/7 Melbourne based home games against low drawing non Victorian clubs (thanks VLAD).

Since 2006 our membership has jumped from 28,011 to 63,353 whilst our Melbourne based attendance has jumped 88% and our Tasmanian attendances have dropped about 30%.

That will be me.

Yesterday rejoined. Kept my Gold membership did not want, seek or need the unnecessary upgrade thank you HFC. They cannot tell me at this stage what seat but I indicated between certain isles so I can hear the boys in M10 singing their songs.

Was always intending to keep my gold membership, offered the best value for money but now looking at AFL membership and it is very attractive in fact, much more attractive option for the future and will purchase within next month.

Then as the tv ad says, I can compare the pair.

How long will you have to wait for AFL Full membership these days?

My sons were waiting for 3 years and were still not upgraded, I ditched it this year and stuck with HFC Gold, glad I did or they wouldn't have been able to get a ticket for the GF.
I also ditched my AFL Full membership as I much prefer sitting amongst fellow HFC members rather than a mix of corporates/opposition and neutral supportes in the AFL Members seats.
