I was out last night and tried to watch the recording when I got home but just couldn't do it after halftime.

While I had my concerns I did think we'd be able to get over North but sadly it wasn't to be.

Still, I watched the first half and, in combination with the Hawks final, I'm thinking like you - we need to add a bit more run on the outside (I think Selwood, Caddy, Horlin-Smith, Christensen, Guthrie along with Jansen, Hartman and Lang have us looking solid enough for the next few years).

As much as I like Blakely I'm starting to lean more towards Ahern.

If we get Frawley (which I feel oddly confident about) we look to a mid (there just isn't a ruckman worth using our first pick on).

Not too sure Bampton would slip to our 2nd selection unless we trade to get a pick in the 20s.

As for a half back/mid with kicking skills, I'd look at Wigg.

Have your seen anything of this kid?

He sounds a good fit, especially if the player comparison is right

The couple of games I watched he didn't really stand out. He looked neat enough but I kinda throw him into the Jordan De Goey bucket.

A bit vanilla from what I've seen.

But I don't know much. If we pick either kid there will be a reason for it.

OK fair enough. a Hurn kick sounds good to me. JDG well id did like what I saw of him but he is probably not what I'm looking for now.

There's highlights of him on Youtube TC. He looks ok but on the limited vision was inconsistent with his disposal by foot. Looks very one sided too. Nice kicking action though.

There's quite a few players that I have interest in this year. In addition to Duggan and Weller; Goddard, DeGoey, Menadue, Blakely, Clem Smith, Marchbank and Ellis all have a lot to like.

With regard to a ruck, unless someone emerges that is truly deserving of a rnd 1 pick, I'd be using a player to trade and/or lower picks.
I know it's being greedy (and probably unrealistic), but I'd love to come away from the FA/trade/draft period with Frawley; a decent, fit ruck; and 2 of the players from the above list - Goddard and Weller or Blakely would be nice but would require us to trade into a higher pick in the late first/early second round.
I'm still a little bummed about last night so this may be a knee-jerk reaction but I don't see this group challenging for a flag next year (we'll probably still make finals but I doubt we can play in a GF let alone win one).

As such, and with a few guys retiring at the end of 2015, I do think we should be more aggressive in trading out guys this year to try and get the next group in.

As unpopular as it would be on the board I think we should trade out Varcoe before FA and we should also look to move on Smedts (who might still get us something based on his "potential").

Guys like Brown, Schroder, Hunt etc might get us another pick later on but these guys aren't going to be worth much. Let's try and get in a couple of guys who are top 30 talents rather than sitting on our hands waiting for our second pick to be mid 30s.

Get aggressive because the list isn't going to win a flag next year imo. And the year after a lot of experience will be leaving.

Couldn't agree more. We really are at long odds to win next year and I'd be accordingly making changes to the list to prepare for another tilt around 2017. It's pretty obvious that our senior core both physically and mentally can't carry us to the ultimate success anymore. We have a stack of players over 30 so should be continuing to reduce our liability in this area.

I've said it before, and I know you were promoting it last year, but I'd love to see us have an extra pick in the late teens/early 20's. I'm not sure how we could engineer it but it would be useful.

Maybe not as unpopular as you may think. Im sort of switching in my long held views , the AFL is becoming a "Gun War" , and if you dont have a group of 5-10 guns you need 5 absolute supreme guns. Hawkins is far from perfect but we have him only due to FS , but it his level of player we need to add. Where and who is our next GUN? Yes we will get kids develop , but its time to get a ready to go gun if we are still in it...or get into the the draft earlier.

If Melb end up with #3 , what would it take to get it? Probably too much but that's what we need imo.

If we decide we are still in it ,( why keep all the mature players if we are not in it) which is more likely to me is what the club will think , we need to find a mature 23-28 year old mid that can come in and help from game 1 2015, Whether he is a tagger or or a line breaker , as long as he is solid plug and play he would help.

Nothing on our list short of Selwood or Hawkins would be enough to get that, we need to be realistic at what we have to play with which isn't much, none of our 30+ players would have any sort of currency, and even if that did I couldn't imagine us doing what St Kilda did. Which our kids that might have currency if we finding a willing suitor would we be willing to trade? Murdoch maybe but he would the smallest worth of them all, Horlin-Smith but we wouldn't get much more than we paid for him in the first place, which is disappointing after putting four years of development into him. I can't see any of our other regular younger players as trade-able.

The club won't trade Smedts because we would get anything remotely close for him compare to the pick we paid for him, forget Brown, Schroder they won't get anything valuable for them, while T.Hunt might get us a third round pick, then again he isn't contracted which would largely reduce our bargaining power.

While we might need to bring in a mature midfielder, what do we do if the only ones we can afford, have either off field issues or get frequently injured or some other undesirable trait that would have been a deal breaker a few years go.

Freo getting the pick ahead of us is not great as i reckon they would be one of the main chances to take goddard

I like Goddard but if we get frawley, then I don't think missing out on Goddard is that bad.

As mentioned above, my hope is that we package our round 1 with HS/or Murdoch for melbourne's pick 3. But if we don't.. I'd like us to get one of lavarde/weller/degoey (best mid talent with highest potential to become an A grade).

The other I really like is garlett. Think we might need another pick in the early 20s to get him.

If Frawley doesn't work out (Fingers cross it does :)) , would anyone consider someone like Sam Frost or Kristian Jaksch for tall backmen?
Yes.

I'd also consider Frost's brother at Collingwood.

I think Collingwood would never trade him to Geelong.
I think you're right.

But I mentioned him because I raised Jack's name earlier in the year. ;)

He was TAC FS this week , bit cheeky but not overly impressive. It was just the Hurn thing that caught may attention.

The one kid who may be a little later than he read is this kid.....

http://boundforglorynews.com/2014-draft-profile-connor-menadue/

I like what I read , Id like to see some of him.....

Height: 188 cm
Weight: 69 kg
Position: Midfielder
Strengths: Explosiveness, match winner, clearance specialist, clean user
Areas of Improvement: Winning the inside ball, gaining muscle
Player Comparison: Ryan Griffen

The most important part is that he can stand up when the game is on the line. He completely set up the Jets second quarter lead of 29 points. The Eastern Ranges pegged it back to three goals and started to look threatening, then Menadue stepped up and kicked a crucial goal in the third quarter. In the dying moments, the Eastern Ranges had a one-point lead, but Menadue kicked the match winner to get the Jets across the line by four points.

It wouldn't surprise me if he is a Wells pick. Nice size , underated a bit. Time will tell

He seems to be the flavour of the month at the moment off the back of a few good TAC games. He is one that would make a nice 2nd round pick if we were to upgrade to a pick in the high teens/early 20's. I'd say he is in the category where there are likely to be a few higher rated types at our first pick but he'll be called before our current 2nd rounder is up.

I've tried to find some vision of him but have been unsuccessful. But he does sound like the sort of player that we need for sure.

I'd say there is a fair chance that whoever doesn't get Frawley will pick Goddard if the order of picks remains the same up until draft day (and Goddard's stocks don't rise).

Like it TC, I also mentioned I liked him a couple of weeks back on the main list mgm thread. Looks a ripper, could go first round IMO.

I think we need to add a bit more scoring power through the midfield. Feel we are probably a Quality Med Fwd light on atm, with Menzel up in the air and Smedts not coming on. Bartel won't be around forever.

I've been watching the SANFL Grand Final, with the idea of keeping a close eye on Sam Baulderstone. I have to say, he's played really well for Norwood and has been dominating the tap outs thus far. Interestingly, he's also one of three players SANFL to be named in the 2014 AIS AFL Academy.

How would he compare to OrrenS? Or perhaps you would like to say who he plays a bit like?
