Which high numbers are free for Ellis, McKenzie, Drummond etc to take though?

I seriously doubt that even if Richmond had a number lower than 30, they would have given it to one of them anyway. It's just a quirk that Richmond have under Hardwick. It's an old school "earn your number" type thinking. It's not better or worse than other clubs, but it is different.

Ill be honest, I like it.

The Saints look set to give McCartin #4 but Id rather he wears his state champs number #40 and then he can earn one of #12, #13, #25 etc

Better yet, he wears #40 and keeps it. :)

Love when players carve out their own legacy in a number, rather than dumping it for an earlier one.

I don't mind the way Richmond do it, but I think it makes sense to just assign players the available numbers and then just leave them in it.

I think a number of players want lower numbers though. And if they earn it, they deserve the right to get another number and move up. It often shows that the club is putting faith in the younger stars and is going to build around them.

Fair enough, I can see where you're coming from.

I just like seeing players wear the one number throughout their careers. Bailey Dale (31) and Caleb Daniel (35) have been assigned relatively high numbers at the Dogs, I hope they stick with them even though numbers like 1 and 5 could open up in the next couple of years.

Eli in 4 is different to what we expected but I like it. I think Roo will be warming up the 12 for Paddy when the time comes

I know i'm going to be missing something really obvious here and look like an idiot, but who has had the #4 in past for the Saints?

And good riddance to him!

Was pretty promising his first year. 18 goals in 8 games (incl. 4 in a close elimination final).

Dropped off a cliff after that

Eli following the new tradition for the #4.

Andrew Thompson was a mature age player from the 'burbs who had been passed over in the draft. Got his chance at the Saints and was a fantastic foot soldier in the late 90's and early 2000's.

Clint Jones took the number over after Thommo. He too was a mature ager who was passed over in the draft and had to settle for a rookie spot. Became one of the best taggers in the game and his battles with Ablett and Brent Harvey were amazing to watch.

Like those two, Eli was passed over in the draft and picked as a rookie. Here's hoping he lives up to the standard!

Where are her hands?

According to the GWS website...

13. Paul Ahern (was Tom Boyd)
26. Jarrod Pickett (was Jonathan Giles)
34. Caleb Marchbank (was Kristian Jakcsh)
38. Jack Steele (was Stephen Gilham)
42. Pat McKenna (was Mark Whiley)
47. Jeremy Finlayson (nobody last year, Josh Bruce before that)

Listed as 0 are Patfull and Griffen - I would imagine some kind of official announcement/event for these two, although Patfull's Brisbane number 24 (Jono O'Rourke) is available leaving 32 (Josh Hunt) as the other available number for either Griffen or Nathan Wilson (16) if Griffen wants his old number and Wilson is willing to give it up.

Attitudes to giving out numbers to young players:

Richmond:

Young player: Hey coach, I know I'm new, but can I have the number six? I played with it as a junior and I'm on the up!
Coach: You have much to learn young padwan, here, have the number 113, it will serve you wisely. One day, if you play well, we will consider giving you a lower number.
Young player: Hmph.

Other clubs:

Young player: Hey coach, I know I'm new, but can I have the number six? I played with it as a junior and I'm on the up!
Coach: You're a confident, perhaps a little too confident, but I like your moxie kid, I was going to give you a higher number, but what the hell, here, have it!
Young player: Thanks coach!
I think the rest of us will take advice from clubs without ridiculously long Premiership droughts, thanks.
