Why though? The only people who care about this pissing contest are us. Even then, we disagree on what true numbers are. Some want equivalent to H11, some want extra for away members, some want extra for reserve seat and coterie members (as they pay more per game)

Membership is a false measure of comparative support anyway. Hawks and north have the tassie bump, wce/freo have the issue most their supporters cannot physically buy a membership, efc and pies are close to reserved out too.

Each club should be looking at its supporter base, and engineering packages that will maximize the overall financial contribution it can extract from them. And the reality is, any club that takes a cookie cutter approach to this is idiotic

We all know that the headline numbers are as good as meaningless as a marker for true level of support. Anyone thinking differently simply does not have a clue.

Let's be honest 3 gamers are so cheap that any solvent person can buy one more or less on a whim. Lunch for 2 in a mid range restaurant will cost as much.

As you say every club should use what assets it has to appeal for members in whatever way works.

May want to talk to someone on a low income. Not everyone can afford $40pp so off hand.

There is a reason three gamers work, they allow those who cannot afford a full membership to join. Even so, it's still a financial commitment for many that shouldn't be dismissed as trivial

Do they work though? They add an extra number to the membership figure, but it's not like crowds have increased since clubs started offering them. It's just people that would otherwise pay for a ticket at the gate.

Not saying they don't work either, but it may well not provide any financial benefit. Take into account that they're cheaper per game, and the cost of processing the membership (and all that other s**t clubs send out) might mean the club is worse off.

It's $80 the club gets that it would never have received

Even if a punter went three times as GA, that's still less than $70 at the game, and the club only gets a fraction of this

A pretty high fraction though. And they don't have to pay to process it - bear in mind a 3 game membership would cost a club a similar amount to process as an 11 game, which appears to be around $30-40 a membership.

I reckon at best the benefit is marginal.

Going off a very old memory, I think the gate take is less than 50%

Remember the afl and MCC both take a big chunk of walk ups, add ticketek for those who book

:thumbsu: Right on Rob, and why is it not questioned - AFL PR for club cheerleaders aided & abetted by the unquestioning AFL media, and lapped up by one dimensional supporters.
Is it doing any harm - that's not PR, of course its good, no consequences ???
I question the effect on walk ups, long a good money earner for the Melbourne clubs, under threat?
Equally, the old VFL business model attracted crowds from both teams, not as reliant on members - are less fans attending games, ??

Good point Rob.

The only problem with clubs having so many members is that it enables fools like WB Pres Gordon to twist the figures and say they make more from one game in Cairnes than 10 games @ home.
Of course there will be more walk ups / game day revenue in Nth Qld where no-one is a member.
Clubs have already banked 100ks for each game before the game is played.
Why does nobody question this when talking about a third stadium.

The AFL subsidise the game just as they do the NZ/Saints game.

So hawthorn keep playing games In tassie because then, well if they aren't making money out of it why do they play there?

They do make money - they get a direct $4 million annual payment from the Tassie government in additional to other usual revenue streams.
If not for that payment, they almost certainly wouldn't do it. An extra $1 million a game is a huge amount.
