Brisbane Lions Vice-Captain Pearce Hanley will undergo hip surgery and be sidelined for 12 weeks.
Hanley has developed soreness in recent weeks and been managed through training but the Club’s medical team believe it’s in his long-term best interest to have surgery now.

The surgery, scheduled for next week, will clean up bone and cartilage in the hip.
With a 12-week rehabilitation, it’s hoped he will only miss the first month of the AFL Premiership season.
Lions General Manager, Football Operation, Dean Warren, said having the operation immediately was the best option for Hanley.

“Pearce is obviously disappointed to miss the start of the season but the sensible approach is to have the surgery now,” said Warren.
“We have managed the injury through recent weeks but there is no use playing through the season and making the injury worse.

“Pearce is a key part of our team and we will miss him but we would rather fix the problem now and make sure we get it right.”

Clearly couldn't cope with the pressures of being a VC. Poor guy.

On a serious note, glad they're getting it done ASAP so he can play round 5.

Also, this is where our new found depth comes into play - I know we'd all like Pearce out there but this opens a spot for somebody else to take their chance.

Rather then honest battlers walking into the best 22 every week like a few years ago, we'll have someone knowing this might be their only shot to prove they're good enough.

well its not really ASAP. They could have done it weeks ago but chose not to.

Really annoying. Other clubs injuries are only several weeks and ours is 3 months.

I disagree. If they thought it was 100% needed it would have been done earlier. If they thought it was managable with a lighter schedule so he'd be fit for round 1 then you can't blame them for that.

Would have been nice if they'd made the call even four weeks earlier, but who knows when the diagnosis was actually made. Either way, there are worse times for this to happen.

Imo, l would actually think for a young, developing team like ours, the start of the season would be the worst time to get a injury to one of your key players. Realistically we arent going to get into finals and if we start the season really badly like the last couple of years in can set us back.

Hanley has been playing in the middle, we can comfortably cover him for the first few weeks. It is a loss, but not massive. Best for the club to pull the trigger now if the injury hasnt been playing ball.

Yup. Avoiding surgery is a good thing.
