Over the course of this year i've heard this debate get dragged up again and again. So i figured, it's off season lets settle this in a friendly debate. The 2011 side vs the 2015 side put them against each other and who wins?

Melbourne 2011

13th on the ladder. 8 Wins 13 losses and 1 Draw

(2011 had two byes due to the Gold Coast)

Melbourne 2015

13th on the ladder. 7 Wins 15 losses

Melbourne 2015 vs Melbourne 2011

The 2015 side is a much better side at getting the football. the 2015 side is harder at the contest with many inside mids.

However this can be counter attacked. While the 2015 side is good for winning the ball the 2011 side possessed more leg speed something the 2015 side clearly lacked.

Melbourne 2015 has a key forward in Hogan the 2011 side does not have a KPF but relies more on a shared attack on the goals.

2011 has a flimsy defence 2015 looks more solid but it can also crack under pressure.

2015 is a fairly inconsistent side. capable of upsetting in big games but loosing to teams lower than them. the 2011 side is more of a bully, while they aren't so capable of beating teams higher than them, they will belt a side that is lower than them.

Hard to look at it purely from wins and losses because the 2011 season had Gold Coast who were barely competitive, so some wins were soft.

I'd back Melbourne 2015. Melbourne 2015 has better leaders and is a more experienced side. Melbourne 2011 were only competitive in half the games, of which they usually belted some opposition side at the G, and 'bruise-free' in the rest. Melbourne 2015 is more competitive and quite importantly, much fitter.

Melbourne 2015 beat Geelong at Geelong. Melbourne 2011 fell 4 points short....of breaking the record for biggest defeat ever.

My first thought was the 2015 side every day of the week but Gysberts2Bate is right
The 2010/11 sides would have ******* raped us, they were the current WBs side without the substance when it mattered

They would have beaten us today by 10 goals
However if Gawn had dragged Jamar all over the ground and viney and vince had beaten up on Moloney in the middle then current Melbourne might have been a chance

Also Imagine Jeremy Howe and Liam Jurrah going for the same footy in the back half, Interesting in the air but then Jurrah would have torched him on the deck

You read with a South African accent in your head generally? Or only for when reading nickgrant69?

Was channeling the great Tony Greig's best caw pawk and then went kiwi for the end bit. I need new glasses and a better mindset.

Ah, nothing like a retrospective downer.

Going to see the 2011 flat track bullies destroy teams: $25
Tearing up your membership after 186: $200
Realising the team you gave up on would destroy the team you are placing your faith in today: Priceless

For hope there's 17 other clubs, for everything else there's the MFC.

There is a bucket load of variables here.

Who was playing at the time, for both teams. Did the opposition team we play, how hot/cold was the form they had, what state was our list in how many to be retired players or players that would not make it etc.

In 2011 the fourth highest team had 17 wins (WCE) and the 8th team (Essendon) had 11 wins.

In 2015 the fourth highest team had 16 wins (Sydney) and the 8th team (North) had 13 wins. Much tighter in my opinion.

If you compare the 2015 Ladder (http://www.afl.com.au/ladder) versus the 2011 Ladder (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_AFL_season#Ladder). You can see the wins for those outside the 8 are stronger/higher in 2015. We defeated at least 5 teams below us that year, in 2011.

For me with the teams we beat, and the strength of the competition now I believe Melbourne are a slightly better team in 2015. What is letting us down is consistency. Which by the way is what I want to see most of all next year.

Some facts detailed below...

In 2011 our results and where they finished.... (average losing score was 56pts)

At Home:-
Richmond(Finished 12th with 8 wins)
Fremantle (Finished 11th with 9 wins)
Essendon (Finished 8th with 11 wins)
Adelaide (Finished 14th with 7 wins)
Gold Coast (Finished 17th with 3 wins)
Brisbane (Finished 15th with 4 wins)

Away
Port (TIO Stadium- Darwin) (Finished 16th with 3wins)
Gold Coast (Finished 17th with 3 wins)

And Draw Round 1 vs Sydney (Finished 7th with 12 wins)

In 2015 our results and where they finished....(average losing score was 45pts)

At Home:-
Gold Coast (Finished 16th with 4 wins)
Richmond (Finished 5th with 15 wins)
Western Bulldogs (Finished 6th with 14 wins)
Brisbane Lions (Finished 17th with 4 wins)
Collingwood (Finished 12th with 10 wins)
Giants (Finished 11th with 11 wins)

There's no doubt 2011 has an even spread of somewhat talented players.

But 2015 has Jesse Hogan.

This was all I could think of ...

Nicely researched. :thumbsu:

Haha, would you believe i actually looked for an actual 2011 and 2015 jumper for each, but my perfectionist streak gave way apathy and a need to do actual work.
You have a job that's more important than pointless Photoshopping? You chump.
