2015 World Cup Team/Squad

Whilst the ODI's against England have been derided by some as 'meaningless', there is the small matter of a home World Cup coming up in a year and a half. The selectors would have been looking at these matches with great interest in the hope to settle the team at some stage in the next couple of months in the hope of building experience prior to the cup.

For me, there are six locks in the side. Watson and Clarke have been fixtures for a while, whilst Bailey's form for the last year has been outstanding. On the bowling side, it's hard to see anyone getting past Johnson and McKay, whilst Starc has been our best white ball bowler for the past couple of years.

That still leaves a lot of spots up for grabs. I'd prefer Watson to open, and would have hoped that one of Finch or Marsh secured their spot this series. However, that didn't happen and has left the door open for a Warner or Hughes to fight their way back in.

I imagine that the selectors would want to get Steve Smith into the middle order to help further his development. Voges and Maxwell seem to be fighting for a similar role in the side, but Voges more consistent batting probably sees him as the front runner.

Wade certainly hasn't convinced anyone that he's a certainty for the World Cup and seems to be down on confidence and form. Haddin could be a sneaky chance to get back in, but this spot is probably as wide open as any. I expect Wade to hold his place, however.

Faulkner has the lower order allrounder spot almost sewn up, although a dominant Mitch Marsh performance in the latter half of the season when he returns from injury could put some pressure on him.

As for the spinners, Ahmed didn't impress all that much in England. Doherty is steady, although he wilted under pressure in the World T20 semi final and the selectors seem reluctant to try Lyon. You'd imagine that Agar may get a crack at some stage, but the selectors may just go with the three fast bowlers and rely on the part timers of Voges/Maxwell, Clarke and Smith.

So, after all that, my team for the 2015 World Cup:

Watson
Finch/Warner
Clarke*
Smith
Bailey
Voges
Wade+
Faulkner
Johnson
Starc
McKay

Maxwell
Doherty
Smarsh
Cummins/Pattinson

Watson
Finch
Clarke*
Voges
Bailey
Warner
Haddin
Faulkner
Johnson
Starc
McKay

This would be a good side I think, 2 fast bowlers, 2 medium pace bowlers and one medium pace allrounder , Voges to bowl spin if needed, and batting is strong as we bat all the way down to 10!

1. Watson
2. Marsh
3. Hughes
4. Clarke*
5. Bailey
6. Voges
7. Faulkner
8. Hartley+
9. Johnson
10. McKay
11. Doherty

12. Smith
13. Maxwell
14. Starc
15. Pattinson

Problems I can see with the above is:

1. Marsh breaks down a lot so you need Warner and Finch as reserves if he does break down
2. Clarke should be a three, Hughes wouldnt be in my 11.
3. Doherty is a spud, if you want some spin you can bowl Voges
4. I assume Maxwell being listed is a joke , he would make the third 11.

I would pick Haddin because he a good one day player and can even open if needed but would be ok with Hartley given a go, as long as Wade doesnt get picked

1. Marsh breaks down earlier then select someone else. It's in Australia. Otherwise move Hughes to open.
2. I disagree.
3. Decent ODI bowler.

Voges' being bowled and doing well may well keep out a specialist spinner every now and then, but equally it might force out Faulkner every now and then. With the 3 obvious seam selections plus Watson plus (spinner or faulkner) and then with Voges among others being able to chip, we've got our 50 overs + insurance options sorted out. We shouldn't be picking 5 specialist bowlers plus Watson plus insurance options as with the teams selected by Ethan and TassieE. So there'll be times when the spinner is picked, and times where the spinner is dropped and the 4th seamer comes in, as per the recent OD series. There shouldn't be a policy where the spinner is always dropped 'cause of Voges

That theory is spot on if that spinner is a very good player and adds a lot to the team, whether you bowl doherty or voges for a few overs the result wouldn't be much different, but you could bat Voges up the order at say 4 and he could hold the innings together the way he can work it around, where as Doherty will bat 11 ...... Your theory would be spot on if you were talking about a class spin blower like Swan from England...

Watson
Paine+
Maddinson/Burns
Clarke*
Bailey
Voges
Smith
Faulkner
Johnson
Starc
Mckay
12th man- Hazlewood

I like the idea of Paine opening as I feel his technique is suited with the new hard ball as he times the ball well & he couldn't go any worse than Wade. I'm tipping a bolter in Maddinson or Burns to have a cracking summer & I believe number 3 would be a good spot for one of them.

In Clarke, Bailey & Voges you have a very reliable middle order who can either shore things up or keep the momentum going. Smith, Faulkner, Johnson & Starc to do the late hitting. On the bowling side a spinner didn't really stand out so why pick one if we don't have a good one? I would choose Lyon personally but I can't see that happening.

We would then have to get 10 overs out of Watson, Smith & Voges which shouldn't be a problem.

Has Paine had a decent innings with the bat since his return from injury?

Yeah. About what I remembered.

Surely Hartley is now the better batting option?

Just a thought:

If Harris doesn't think his body is up to test cricket anymore, would it be worth trying to get him to play a role in the World Cup squad. He has great ODI stats and he should be able to get through 10 overs a game fairly easily.

Would probably be competing with McKay for a spot, but it'd be a good problem to have.

Could have an attack of McKay, Harris and Starc/Johnson

Finch
Warner
Watson
Clarke
Bailey
Maxwell
Haddin
Faulkner
Johnson
McKay
Doherty

Starc only omitted out of the XI so there's a right hander in. Those are the only locks though, last 3 positions could be anyones.

Voges/White/Smith
Coulter-Nile/Henriques/Christian/Pattinson/M. Marsh
S. Marsh/Hughes

I think its worth debating if Faulkner is in our best XI.
Ultimately it's 2 of the three lefties + McKay and Doherty. It's which 2 that causes debate
