2016 AFL Fixture predictions (respite after 2015?)

I'm pretty sure I heard there's something in place where the PAFC/AFC alternate year to year in getting the Collingwood Adelaide Oval game. If that's true then we'll get them once this year, probably at Etihad lol. Fist away game I'd like in Melbourne at the G or the GCS away because I've made a tradition of going to the first away game in recent years.
That's absolute s**t if there's such an agreement. The draw is already compromised enough without this s**t.

We aren't going to get more than one game at the MCG. We are a 'fill up Etihad's quota playing Vic teams with no crowd pulling ability' filler. We are top 6 for Memberships, top 4 for crowds, but it'll take at least another 4 or 5 years before it filters through to the Vics that this is now status quo, for a non-SNAFL/AAMI Stadium shackled Port, rather than a transient spike. Until then our draw is still going to be littered with 'and now the big clubs are taken care of, lets use Port to soak up some of the remaining contractual s**t for venues/timeslots'.

The fixture rules are based on the part of the ladder teams finish in, whether it is the top, middle or bottom six. But there appears to be nothing that states definitely whether this is before or after finals. After checking a few teams that finished in the top 6 after the minor round but the middle 6 after the finals it seems to be after finals.
Richmond were 5th after the home and away season in 2013 but after losing the elimination final were 7th. The double-ups they got the next year were the ones a team 7-12 gets, only one double-up against a top 6 team(Sydney), two against teams 7-12(Brisbane and Essendon) and two against bottom teams(GWS and St Kilda). A team finishing in the top 6 must get at least 2 double-ups against top 6 teams.
In 2014 the teams that finished in the top 6 after the minor round finished in the top 6 after the home and away, and in 2013 the other team that was top 6 before finals and middle 6 after finals, Collingwood, had a 2/2/1 double-up, which can happen to a top 6 or a middle 6 team.

Assuming the favourites win the elimination finals our bracket will contain
  1. Adelaide (certainty)
  2. Collingwood (likely)
  3. Geelong (moderate)
  4. North Melbourne
  5. Greater Western Sydney
I'd say we will play three middle 6 teams twice one top 6 side twice and one bottom 6 side twice.

My guess is that our double-ups will be
  • Hawthorn x2
  • Adelaide x2
  • North Melbourne x2
  • Geelong x2
  • Carlton x2

TOUGHEST 2015 FIXTURES (BASED ON 2015 RESULTS)
1. Port Adelaide (21)
2. Geelong (34) +13
3. Fremantle (37) +16
4. Gold Coast Suns (41) +20
5. Essendon (42) +21
6. West Coast Eagles (44) +23
6. Melbourne (44) +23
8. St Kilda (47) +26
9. North Melbourne (48) +27
9. Carlton (48) +27
11. Sydney Swans (49) +28
12. Richmond (54) +33
12. Adelaide Crows (54) +33
14. Western Bulldogs (55) +34
14. Brisbane Lions (55) +34
16. Hawthorn (56) +35
17. Collingwood (61) + 40
18. GWS Giants (65) +44

If anyone has any means of guessing this it is possible to form the basic frame of our fixture next year.

#yepconfirmed
  • Round 1 home game
  • Adelaide Crows x2
  • First Showdown generally round 2-6 (often 3 to 5).
  • Second Showdown generally round 15-22 (often 15 to 19)
  • Bye rotation suggests we will get middle bye next year.
  • 100% lock for Gold Coast and North Melbourne at home.
  • Geelong at Kadina likely.
  • Fremantle double-up unlikely.
  • West Coast double up likely.

Double ups against Hawthorn (top six), Adelaide (top six), Geelong (middle six), GWS (middle six) and Carlton (bottom six).

Good effort, but I'd say that the two games against GWS are too close together, especially with a bye in between. Not that the AFL would care though.

Mark it down, we will play them twice again.

I'd love the Hawks at Adelaide Oval ANZAC day night again. Was proved as success.
also no Thursday night games, period. I hate that time slot.
And no more than 2 Sunday twilight games in a row - 4 in a row this year was sheer madness.

If we don't play Fremantle twice, we'll definitely play West Coast twice.

Now that's what I'm hoping for. Reckon we will get Carlton or something. Hawthorn at the G would be perfect
Might depend on who the Hawks play in Tassie. We haven't played there for a while - maybe the AFL might decide it's time we did.

Records of teams that we have played twice, while not giving a definite answer, may give a pointer towards who we are likely to play twice. Or who we are not likely to play twice. These are, not including finals :
Adelaide - twice every year
Brisbane - 8 times. 1997,1999-2003, 2005, 2009.
Carlton - 9 times. 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2013, 2014.
Collingwood - 4 times. 1997, 2004, 2006, 2011.
Essendon - 5 times. 1997, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2012.
Fremantle - 11 times. 1998-2000,2005-2009, 2012, 2014, 2015.
Geelong - 7 times. 1997, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2013.
GCS - Once. 2013.
GWS - Once. 2013.
Hawthorn - 10 times. 1998, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009-2012, 2015.
Melbourne - 10 times. 1998, 1999, 2002-2004, 2007, 2009-2011, 2014.
N.Melbourne - 8 times. 1998, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008-2011.
Richmond - 6 times. 1997, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012.
St Kilda - 6 times. 1997, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2008, 2010.
Sydney - 6 times. 1998, 1999, 2006, 2008, 2014, 2015.
West Coast - 7 times. 2001, 2002-2004, 2009-2011.
Western Bulldogs - 6 times. 1999-2001, 2004, 2006, 2015.

So Collingwood and Essendon the least times, Fremantle the most. Even though we have played them twice in the last two years that is no reason to say we won't be scheduled to play them twice again. As you can see we played them twice 5 years in a row from 2005-2009. And we also played Hawthorn twice 4 years in a row from 2009-2012.

I would expect us to get a 2/2/1 draw. An easier 1/3/1 or 1/2/2 draw is possible for teams 7-12 but with the extra constraint the AFL forces on itself to keep Collingwood and Essendon in Melbourne those kinds of draws go to teams in Victoria.

It's definitely after finals

I'm still holding out we will get Collingwood twice.
Fortunately both Essendon and Carlton finished in the bottom 6 or there would be a very small chance of that happening. Collingwood always play them twice but they can do that as bottom clubs. Makes the draw unfair as Collingwood's chances of a 2/2/1 draw depend on the ladder positions of two other teams. At least with the showdown and the derby it is only one. And there may be a problem in the future. Say Collingwood end top 6 and both Essendon and Carlton bottom 6. A top 6 team can double-up on bottom 6 teams only once.

To accommodate Essendon and Carlton, Collingwood have to have a 1/2/2 draw. They must play teams from the middle 6 at least twice which leaves only one top 6 double-up.

And when that happens suddenly 6/6/6 will go.

people are dreaming if they think the AFL will give us Hawks twice given our recent record against them. We are most likely to get Syd twice, or one of the WA teams twice to ensure we have to travel to Perth twice in the year.

Indeed. At least the All Blacks game isn't at Eden Park...

I wouldnt be so sure. There's a good rivalry building between the two, and the AFL love cashing in on a rivalry.
