My takeaway was the same, tougher first half and easier second half. Should get more wins in the second half compared to last year, but tougher work for marketing and memberships with some hard games to start to season.

I kinda like having a tough first half. It means we can see what we are really like when fresh against top teams while those top teams often start the year off a bit slowly.

Hopefully it'll mean we minimize our big losses against those teams (or maybe pull off an upset or two) while still giving us a good chance to beat the easier teams later in the year.

I think most Saints fans these days will see us being competitive against the top teams as being a win in terms of marketing and memberships. At this stage it's more about our intent in those games than if we win or not (as long as we don't get flogged).

Even then there are still at least 3 wins in that first half (Blues, Dons, Dees) with our round 2 game against the dogs being a game we must win (but might not).

Should win 6-7 of the 10 double up fixtures. Plus wins against gold coast & Brisbane. Plus a couple of upsets. Should get 10ish wins if playing to our best.

Here's my hot take:

Round 1: vs. Port Adelaide (a), AO, Sunday March 27, 2.50pm NOT WINNABLE (Due to ground)
Round 2: vs. Western Bulldogs (h), ES, Saturday April 2, 7.20pm WINNABLE
Round 3: vs. Collingwood (h), MCG, Saturday April 9, 1.45pm WINNABLE
Round 4: vs. Hawthorn (a), AU, Saturday April 16, 2.10pm NOT WINNABLE
Round 5: vs. GWS (h), ES, Sunday April 24, 1.10pm WINNABLE
Round 6: vs. Melbourne (a), ES, Saturday April 30, 1.45pm WINNABLE
Round 7: vs. North Melbourne (h), ES, Sunday May 8, 3.20pm WINNABLE
Round 8: vs. West Coast (a), DS, Sunday May 15, 4.40pm NOT WINNABLE
Round 9: vs. Essendon (h), ES, Sunday May 22, 4.40pm WINNABLE
Round 10: vs. Fremantle (h), ES, Saturday May 28, 4.35pm NOT WINNABLE
Round 11: vs. Adelaide (a), AO, Sunday June 5, 4.10pm NOT WINNABLE
Round 12: vs. Carlton (h), ES, Sunday June 12, 1.10pm WINNABLE
Round 13: BYE
Round 14: vs. Geelong (h), ES, Saturday June 25, 7.20pm WINNABLE
Round 15: vs. Gold Coast (a), MS, Saturday July 2, 1.40pm WINNABLE
Round 16: vs. Essendon (a), Sunday July 10, 4.40pm WINNABLE
Round 17: vs. Melbourne (h), Sunday July 17, 3.20pm WINNABLE
Round 18: vs. Western Bulldogs (a), ES, Saturday July 23, 7.20pm WINNABLE
Round 19: vs. North Melbourne (a), ES, Saturday July 30, 7.20pm WINNABLE
Round 20: vs. Carlton (a), MCG, Sunday August 7, 1.10pm WINNABLE
Round 21: vs. Sydney (h), ES, Saturday August 13, 7.20pm NOT WINNABLE
Round 22: vs. Richmond (a), MCG, Satuday August 20, 2.10pm NOT WINNABLE
Round 23: vs. Brisbane (h), ES WINNABLE

I'm only counting seven games I don't think we can win, four interstate games and games in Melbourne against Fremantle, Sydney & Richmond.

Further more, we really should beat Carlton, Melbourne & Essendon twice & Brisbane. So I think 7 wins is the base, and 14-15 is the maximum.

Very happy with the fixture, should be able to get to most of the home games. Improvement on last year is a must and should be around that 7-12 fight for the last couple of spots in the 8 at least 7 garrunteed wins and should cause a few upsets. I think it's odd that we play Brisbane for the first time in r23 though. Mind you I do like the break between r23 and the finals

Great fixture. But FFS another October grand final!! That one day in September is dead.
The sooner the junction oval is ready for cricket the sooner the granny will be back in September.

Ok... a bit more of a nuanced view.

Likely wins = 8
GWS (Losing Treloar will kill their forward run)
Melbourne x 1 (They should improve this year enough)
Essendon x 2
Carlton x 2
Brisbane
Gold Coast - They have lost Bennell and Dixon

50-50 chances = 5 wins
Melbourne x 1 (They should improve this year enough)
Bulldogs x 1 (50-50 given their possible improvement vs our improvement)
Richmond (our losing margin has been trending down... and the last one was only 16 after a few junk goals)
Geelong - Yes, they now have Dangerfield, but injuries/suspensions can give us a chance as we had a draw this year.
North Melbourne x 1 = Not at Tassie anymore!

Danger Games
Collingwood - got touched up last year.
Hawthorn - enough said
Sydney - enough said
West Coast - enough said
North Melbourne x 1

So even if we drop one of the likely ones, we can come up better in 1-2 games in the possible group. Therefore, I'd say we can win between 9 and 11 games in 2016!

If we were playing Melbourne at the MCG I'd agree, but we got a big birthday present there. Melbourne twice at Etihad - THANKS AFL!

I think Collingwood are the yardstick of where we want to go, and a team we need to get past and on top of. We were good early last year against them before tiring, in part because of a second six day break centred around a trip to the Gold Coast. A better rest this time should be to our advantage.

Very happy with the draw overall, but see the first 4 weeks as being huge for us, with them all against teams who could easily enough play finals next year. Win two of those and we could be in with a serious shot of making the finals if enough things fall into place for us. Our good NAB draw should allow us to hit the season with some good momentum and confidence.

Love that we play Melbourne at Etihad 3 times for the year and that we get to play Carlton twice and Brissy only at the Gabba!

8 games in Melbourne to finish the season.

Only 5 six day breaks (the lowest is 4).

Play North, Dogs, Essendon, Melbourne and Carlton twice.

3 games at the G.

This draw is an absolute ripper from a football perspective. Commercially, it's not great. But we can't expect a good commercial draw given our crowd figures and ladder position.

Very pleased.

Id say that commercially its fantastic . Home games against eight of the possible nine melbourne based teams. Only one Sunday twilight game. Finnis is an absolute gun for this club and just shows the influence he has .

Based on that - 9 wins minimum with an upside to 12 wins.

I also had a look see at the Melbourne board, and they are pretty worried about their home game at etihad against the saints. So, that's a good pick up.

And both games against North are at Etihad as well, meaning Goldy's impact won't be so much. Big chance in the return game against them.

Looks like Melbourne (who have been neck-and-neck with us over the last two years) have a much more difficult draw than us. 7 games interstate (2 more than us, including home games in the NT), one in Geelong (which is like having 3 more interstate games than us) and they play Hawthorn (ouch!), Collingwood and Port Adelaide twice and Carlton only once, plus they play their contracted home game at Etihad against us.
