2016 team (inc trades)

If Menzel ends up playing 180 good games for us as a half forward, do you still maintain that the trade will have been a complete failure?
You fail to realise there are no specialist HFF in AFL anymore .......NONE

Lynch plays as a lead up 3rd tall ......but due to rotations and need for fresh legs thru the midfield, there are no specialist HFF

So 180 games as a HFF for Menzel will not happen at all

The thing I see with Menzel is that he's coming from a long way back. I'm not entirely sure if he'll ever develop the tank needed to play in the midfield. It sounds like Cameron has come on in leaps and bounds, and will play well in the midfield this year - partially due to a now well-developed tank. I'm not sure Menzel will ever get that. If he did, he could certainly play midfield minutes. If he doesn't, however, I don't see him being a weapon on a wing - rather in a forward pocket/on a HFF.

Just remember Adelaide are treating Menzel and his fitness, the same as Freo is doing with Bennell ......building his fitness base for the longterm, not short-term

What if he plays 180 games in a Lynch role. Will it still be a total failure because he didn't become a midfielder?

Calling them specialist HFF is just a "get out" for you, plenty of "small" to "medium" Forwards spend the majority of their time in the Forward part of the ground, Cyril Rioli, Jamie Elliott, Jarryd Blair, Matthew Stokes, Haydn Ballantyne, Michael Walters, Brandon Matera, Jeff Garlett, Shaun Higgins, Jack Lonie, Mark LeCras, Tory Dickson etc etc.......not too many of them spend very much time in the midfield rotations if any...all are SPECIALIST Forwards without being KPF's.

Champion data refers to these guys as ' general forwards '.... Plenty of them

Trying to pick our best 22 without watching training or NAB is impossible IMO. Our depth and ability to pick a 22 to suit or mismatch our opposition is looking fantastic. I hope Pyke is brave enough at selection to do this without issuing gold passes.
All players are named by jumper number.

My 2016 Automatic selections, 16 players assuming the whole list is fit
B Crouch
J Jenkins
S Thompson
J Lever
R Sloane
D Talia
T Walker
K Hartigan
L Brown
E Betts
C Cameron
S Jacobs
R Douglas
T Lynch
R Laird
B Smith

Possibles can only pick 6 to make up the best 22, the pressure is really on this group to perform.
R Knight
N VB
M Grigg
M Jaensch
P Seedsman
D Mackay
C Hampton
R Atkins
K Cheney
C E-Y
W Milera
J Lyons
T Menzel
D Gore
M Crouch
R Henderson
J Kelly

Not Likely, however possible to change after NAB form
A Otten
S Shaw
H Wigg
H Dear
T Doedee
L Lowden
M McGovern

Agree.

I have the same 16 + knight.

Going to be a competitive battle for the remaining places. :)

I would have Knight, M Crouch and Menzel in which leaves 3 spots, that if everyone is fit at the same point in time

If you include Knights M crouch & Menzel in the 22, the remaining 3 players to select would come out of,

Grigg Jaensch Seedsman Hampton Atkins CEY Milera Lyons Hendo & Kelly

with NVB Mackay Cheney & Gore as the more unlikely.
Tough choice but great for the club we have some depth/talent on the list.

*would be disappointed but not surprised if NVB & Mackay in round 1 side*

I know other clubs have their whipping boys, but do they have a number of players that have been 'gifted' games over young fringe players that dont get much of a chance.? It seems our club is very cautious with dropping out of form veterans but quick to drop a 1 bad game young player.

Competition for spots is most unquestionably a good thing, as long as the boys are cohesive as a team and play enough games together as a team. Continuity is important, but we Crows supporters have had enough of spuds being retained for the sake of continuity.
Exactly right.

Competition for spots can be a double-edged swords. On the surface, it's great. However it can cause players to be looking over their shoulder the whole time wondering if the axe will fall. Also can mean that selectors are forever tinkering with the line up rather than giving players the string of games their development/confidence needs.

In the past I think we've been poor at balancing short term and long term goals. Also poor at telling the difference between what is fleeting form and what is underlying quality.

You're talking small forwards ......we were talking HFF ....surely you're not suggesting the makeup of a forward line is simply putting it ......KPF and small forwards, that's too simplistic

Either you didn't actually read the post you quoted of mine or your comprehension skills are lacking somewhat?

So here it is again.....

"Calling them specialist HFF is just a "get out" for you, plenty of "small" to "medium" Forwards spend the majority of their time in the Forward part of the ground" Comprende Amigo??
