Reports on the match against Port Adelaide seemed to be saying that Blayne had trouble with the taller Port forwards. He is looking like another "third tall defender" option (like Brennan) rather than a replacement for Glass or McKenzie.

Blayne Wilson (Peel Thunder/WA) - Draft Profile

187/80 inside general defender
Capable of sustaining a ranking of 8-15 within an AFL list
Similar style to Darren Milburn

Selling points are his reading of the play, kicking accuracy and reliability, composure/vison/decision making, kicking reliability, depth and accuracy, overhead marking –

Backs his reading of the play rather than playing tight on an opponent – best suited to a loosish role where his kicking and decision making can be utilised.

Query is his lack of athleticism (pace and endurance)

Wilson has the potential to become a good to very good medium defender that can play short, tall or loose – however he must improve his athleticism to a higher level.

He’s probably about 7kg away from his ideal playing weight which will likely take 2-3 good pre-seasons to achieve

Well I was away on the weekend but going solely on the stats looks like Blayne had a solid hit out against the cats with 5 disposals and 2 marks, 100% disposal efficiency and 2 one percenters thrown in for good measure.

Against the putrid purple side Blayne backed up with another good performance racking up 7 touches, 4 marks and a running bounce for good measure as well.

Some encouraging signs from the man they call the Train and hopefully he can remain injury free this year as he stakes a claim for a spot in the team.

Had solid games, a lot like last preseason as well. Just hope he stays injury free all year.

IMO I feel more comfortable with him in the team and the ball in his hands that I do with Smith (and Brennan somewhat).

Stay injury free and he's good enough to get a game this year IMO.

Solid game from the train on the weekend first up for his new club:
13 kicks, 9 handballs, 6 marks, 2 tackles

Blayne Wilson and Cale Morton, who stepped out for East Perth for the first time, produced worthwhile contributions in a team that faded badly after half-time.

Wilson was consistent in the defensive half and had 22 possessions and six marks, while Morton had 13 disposals.

Clearly liking the move from being associated with such a shitty rat infested hell hole like Peel Thunder moving to the golden shores of the East Perth Eagles.

EDIT: Ok after a quick email from them, I would like to formally apologise to the Peel Thunder football club for saying they were rat infested. It turns out these are just relatives of Hayden Ballantyne, and Peel Thunder themselves have been fooled a few times due to the similarities. *

*Dramatization, may not have happened

Blayne update!

Round 2 Vs Peel Thockers
10 Kicks, 7 Handballs, 5 Marks and a behind
Wingman Cale Morton continues to build on his form for the Royals with 18 possessions on a wing, while Blayne Wilson was again solid in defence with 17 touches and five marks.

Round 3 Vs Ubi Dubi Subi
12 kicks, 5 handballs, 5 marks and 2 tackles
East Perth Blayne Wilson and Cale Morton were also under notice, Wilson proving efficient at half-back and Morton playing consistently on a wing and contributing to the Royals’ victory.

Morton accumulated 19 possessions and laid six tackles while Wilson had 17 possessions and five marks in a tidy defensive effort.

Oh so close and oh so far for Blayne 2 weeks in a row getting named as an emergency for the Eagles team vs the Hawks and the Dess. He has flow over the Melbourne with the team pending a last minute change to the team or even perhaps a Tonya Harding style incident which i'm sure Blayne would have nothing to do with.

On the plus side though, Blayne will be racking up some frequent flyer points this weekend-

Route: Perth - Melbourne - Perth
Class: Economy
Status Total points
Platinum 6,728
Gold 5,888
Silver 5,046
Bronze 3,364

After a few weeks of being oh so close to an Eagles debut Blayne has had to bide his time back in the WAFL with the Royals and has continued to shine.

Round 6
12 kicks, 7 Handballs, 6 Marks, 1 Goal, 1 Tackle
Also producing solid contributions for the Royals were ruckman Scott Lycett and defenders Blayne Wilson and Cale Morton. Lycett was prominent both in the ruck and deep forward, racking up 20 possessions and bringing down five marks and capped it off with a goal.

Wilson and Morton also had around 20 touches each and offered strong offensive rebound for the Royals.

Round 7
10 Kicks, 3 Handballs, 6 Marks, 2 Tackles
Defender Blayne Wilson has been solid all season for East Perth and was again under notice against Perth,

Round 8
14 Kicks, 6 Handballs, 8 Marks, 1 Tackles
Wingman Matt Rosa is another whose weight of performance in the three weeks since resuming from a serious thigh injury, uncompromising defender Adam Selwood and the ultra-consistent Blayne Wilson, were key contributors when East Perth finished over the top of South Fremantle.

Wilson has been rock solid for the Royals in defence and continued in that fashion, with support coming from Cale Morton, who is another player building into the 2013 campaign.

As you can see above Wilson has taken in his stride well the utensil-teasing the Eagles match committee gave him by going back and performing consistently well at WAFL level. As the old saying goes, never give a sucker an even break and Wilson seems only an opportunity away from providing some consistent output at the next level.

Random facts:

If the Blayne Train makes his debut on Saturday as expected, he will become the 210th person to play for the West Coast Eagles, and the fourth Wilson, making Wilson the equal most common name for an Eagle.

He would be our 5th debutant of the year, already more than we blooded in 2011 and 2012.

He will also be the 5th person to wear the #30, and the first since Matt Spangher played the last few rounds of 2010. In that time Spangher has gone on to make senior appearances for two other clubs.
