What the club says

List manager Chris Pelchen tells hawthornfc.com.au about the club's five selections in the national draft

Selection 63: Luke Lowden

Sandringham Dragons, Vic, Ruckman, February 22, 1991, 204cm, 89kg

“Luke is probably the tallest player in the draft this year [and] will finish Year 12 next year at Caulfield Grammar. He’s a left-footed ruckman and with the testing we’ve done he will likely get to 206cm or 208cm in the end.

"He’s a tap ruckman and we’ll see limited time from him next year as he completes school.”

The 2008 AFL Draft: How your club fared

Emma Quayle | November 30, 2008

HAWTHORN

.
No. 63 LUKE LOWDEN
(Sandringham Dragons) 17, 204cm, 86kg
Young, tall and gangly ruck prospect who could be anything but has not played much high-level football. Will be very much a project player for Hawthorn and will have at least four ruckmen ahead of him in the pecking order.

Hawks travel all over the countryside

Evans said the club’s five new draftees Ryan Shoenmakers, Luke Lowden, Jordan Lisle, Liam Shiels and Shane Savagehad adjusted well since arriving last week.

“They’ve all settled in well. They’ve already developed some pretty close relationships with each other which is common when you get a group of kids come through at the same time. A couple of them are only 17 and still need to complete their VCE studies next year,” he said.

Re: 38. Luke Lowden

Three young players will be wearing the brown and gold for the first time this Sunday.

Riley Milne, Haydn Kiel and Luke Lowden are all in line to debut against the Blues.

Lowden
was taken with pick 63 in last year’s draft and is combining his debut season with Year 12 studies at Caulfield Grammar.

Milne and Kielwere snapped up in the rookie draft, Kielhaving already spent two years on the Brisbane Lions’ rookie list.

Evans said the pre-season campaign gave the team a chance to look at the next wave of youngsters coming through the ranks.

“The whole first part of the NAB Cup for us was about giving some of these kids a go and seeing how they’ve progressed over summer,” he said.

“Some have been here for two or three years and we’re trying to give them a good go at it and run them into some early form. It is certainly the philosophy we took into the game against Melbourne and this week’s team will be similar.”

List assessment: Hawthorn
By Chris Fagan

Luke Lowden
He played most of his football this year with Caulfield Grammar because he was doing Year 12. He played some early games with Box Hill reserves. He had to have shoulder surgery midway through the season so he hasn’t played since June. He is up and going and training, and should be ready for the pre-season.

Re: 38. Luke Lowden

I can tell you that after seeing lowden at training a week ago, he is no longer 'sticks', he has put on quite a bit of weight.

he is listed as 2-3 weeks, which means we lose a rookie.

He should start in the box hill reserves (like grimley last week) and come back slowly.

I have seen him train over the pre season, luke (recently turned 19) is extremely mobile for his height and as long as he can ruck, will be a great prospect .....in 2011.

Round 15, 2011 Hawthorn v Collingwood (3rd vs 2nd on AFL ladder)

Sunday 3rd July 2011

Luke has been named in the Hawthorn squad for this game against the reigning Premiers and the side that sits one place above us on the AFL Ladder.

Will know on Sunday if Luke gets the call up.

Box Hill Hawks had a bye last week.

Congratulations to Luke. Has worked hard and deserves the chance.

11 August 2011 update

From the HawthornFC website

http://www.hawthornfc.com.au/news/ne...7/default.aspx

"Uncapped youngsters Luke Lowden (thumb), Taylor Duryea and Mitch Hallahan (both ankle) have all undergone season-ending surgery with a view to being ready for the start of pre-season."

Was sooooo close to senior selection this year. Hopefully 2012 will see the debut of this big young lad.

Luke Lowden is the heir apparent.

Taken with pick 63 in the 2008 draft, as a 17yr old, his development has been steady over the last 3 years, and now with added bulk and another 4cm from when he was recruited Lowden has started to get the score on the board. While his other draftees from the same year have debuted and been given games, he's had to be content with slowly finding his way in one of the harder positions on the ground, where having an underdeveloped body means you're thrown around like a rag doll. Thankfully though, with time, that's changed.

During the 2011 season, he was a consistent and much improved part of the Box Hill line up, having a couple of break out games, and even living out everyone's boyhood dream of kicking the winning goal at the siren.

What we know about Lowden from watching him at Box Hill is that he has a football brain, and not just height on his side. He is agile for a man of his size, and skilled.
During periods of games this year he showed a few instances of just how good he could be. Against Werribee early in the year I watched as he took the centre clearance, tapped down to his rover and sped off from the contest, to then get onto the end of a handball and dob one from 50m.
This wasn't your average loping ruckman pushing forward, and in the next quarter he followed it up at the opposite end, after shimmying around an opponent and kicking truly.

His body has taken a while to develop to the level that allows him to compete with the more mature bodies in the jostling of the ruck, but as he's added weight and experience he's become a much harder obstacle for his opponent to get around or to move.

Hindered late in the season by a thumb complaint, and a re-occurring back related concern, the club sent him off to concentrate on getting himself right for the 2012 season. Taking this in his stride, Lowden has spent the majority of the early part of this off-season doing extra work to give himself even more of a chance of debuting in the early part of next season.

Everything about Lowden's form at Box Hill suggests that he's on an upward curve, and one to watch. Hawthorn fans should certainly keep an eye out for him in 2012, as he's most definitely going to be putting pressure on those ahead of him(Hale, Bailey) and his hand up for senior games from here and beyond.

Season 2012

Luke has played 6 games for Box Hill so far this season.

Avereging 16 hit outs a game.

Has scored 3 Goals 3 behinds with a goal in each game the last three weeks.

This comment after the teams win against Frankston at Box Hill City Oval

"Luke Lowden: Lowden is one player that continues to impress Box Hill coach Damian Carroll. The big ruckman had 20 hitouts, also posing a threat when forward."
