Summary - WAFL Round 3 - East Perth V Subiaco

So a bit of a summary on Schofield's game today that I have just sat down and watched the replay of.

There was a bit of talk going into Round 1 for the Eagles on whether Schofield should come straight into the starting 21. I think on the evidence of today it was clear that he needed a run or two at WAFL level. The first half he was all over the place - but nowhere near the ball and at half time was sitting on donuts. As the game went on into the second half he did start to look a lot better and was very good in contested situations, especially against Yarran who has been a WAFL gun over the past few seasons.

Below is a description of the play he was involved in.

Q1
-Ball kicked in long to Subiaco 50 - Schofield was out marked by Yarran over the back who goaled.
-Good Shepherd and block as East Perth run out from D50.
-Out of position as a long ball went into Subiaco 50. Schofield is caught 10m in front of Yarran. Yarran takes it on the bounce and Schofield gets back quickly with a strong tackle and EP run it out.
-1on1 marking contest with Yarran, easy spoil however it goes straight to a Subi player who kicks forward and they goal.

Q2
-Strong tackle in a contest and the ball spills out for a throw in
-Was not spotted for the remainder of the quarter

Q3
-High ball into d50 and 1on1 with yarran. Spoils it away and is first back onto the ball and forces a ball up.
-Ball bounces into a contest and Schofield has the chance to take it and run out - he fumbles and his opponent Yarran takes it away and handballs to a teammate. Schoey makes a second effort and chases laying a heavy bump after the Subi player is disposing of the ball.
-Leads up from center wing for a short pass out of defense and takes the mark. Goes back and long kick to Tunbridge at half forward who doesn't mark.
-Comes off the bench to mark uncontested on the back flank from a quick pack kick. Spots up Tunbridge on the lead. Will takes off after disposing of the ball. Tunbridge spots up College who handballs to Schofield and he breaks away to 50 and has a flying shot on goal but misses. Great run from defensive to forward 50.
-He then marks the ball from the kick out on the outer wing and kicks inside 50, but misses Hill over his head. In a bit of a purple patch in the last five minutes and is everywhere.
-Handball receive in d50 and fires a quick handball over the top under pressure to a teammate who runs it out.
-Outer wing 1on1 contest, good spoil.

Q4
-Handball receive out the back of a pack, takes a bit too long to dispose of the ball and is cleaned up. Subi take it forward for a goal.
-Marks a long ball inside d50, he read the ball the best. Middle distance kick and spots up Newman who marks.
-Great spoil 1on1 with Yarran who was in a good position to mark from a quick kick into the 50.
-1on1 in d50 with yarran again, fights to front position and brings the ball to ground.
-Marks an opposition kick on d50 as he reads the ball best again. Switches it wide and EP run it out.
-Picks up a loose ball under pressure and shovels it out to a teammate from the ground as he is being mauled by Yarran.
-Kick in to Hill on d50
-Trailing 10m behind Yarran who marks a short sharp kick on the 50. Kicks a point.
-High ball inside d50, 1on1 and punches it away.
-1on1 on the goal line and spoils the ball over the boundary - strength.
-Handball receive as running out of d50. Typical swerve and shoe sidesteps before a short sharp kick. He is cleaned up late by Yarran and is down for a couple of minutes. Stumbles off with the trainers and takes no further part in the game. Is seen on the bench with trainers looking at his ankle - hopefully just precautionary.

In the end it was a good hit out for Will after a shaky start. Though having not played since the all stars game it really shouldn't be a surprise. If he gets the all clear from the medicos i could see him being available for us in Round 2 though another week couldn't harm. While caught out of position a couple of times, he showed a lot of strength in one on one contests today while still providing some good dash.

We were developing this guy into something else and then through necessity said bulk up and start playing on KPFs.
He has been a soldier and done as asked but it has never been his strength. Now we have Eric and Tom along with Jeremy we should change his role.
Get back to being the lithe runner with pace, good foot skills and goal kicking ability. Spend all next pre-season working on his tank and free him up to kick goals.
He is actually a quite unique specimen and could be the High HF/Mid with bigger body we've been trying to find. Get Frenchy back inside the 50m arc permanently, he has never shone outside that.
Get Yeo back to HB where his true natural assets are best utilised. Get Jeremy back where his best assets shine, anything we gain with him forward is more than cancelled out by the losses of not having him back.
Give Schofield another crack at turning into the High HF/Wing with a bigger body we are looking for, otherwise we are just wasting two players by having him back and Jeremy forward. None of this interferes with midfield development but provides instant upside.
Kennedy, (Vardy/Lycett/Nic Nat), Darling, Lecras/Rioli, Cripps, Schofield forward line reads well to me. We gain some speed, better defensive pressure then Lecras, some height and difference forward and we gain by having Gov and Yeo back where they should be.

I am a bit of a collector and I am looking to buy AFL badges with Schoey on them from the years 2009, 2010 and 2012. Anyone have these badges or know where I could find them?

Mark this date Will..
Hmm. Actually felt the most when Will "mark the date" Schofield got his medal.
Kinda based on the fact he's played so much footy and quite likely wouldn't have been there if we had a sweet run with injuries.
In turn, he played a ripper and thoroughly deserves that medal.
